Donji Humac on Brač | A Stone Village in the Island's Interior

Donji Humac is situated in the interior of Brač, nestled between Supetar and Nerežišća, at an elevation of approximately 350 metres above sea level. The village lies about 10 kilometres from Supetar and a few kilometres from the main island road that connects the northern and southern parts of Brač. Unlike the coastal towns on the island, Donji Humac lacks a promenade or beaches, instead presenting a typical appearance of an old Brač village, characterised by stone houses, narrow streets, olive groves, and large stone courtyards.

The village is renowned for its long-standing tradition of stone masonry and the processing of Brač stone. Numerous quarries in the vicinity of Donji Humac have supplied stone for the construction of houses, churches, and palaces throughout Dalmatia and beyond for centuries. The stone from this part of Brač has been used in many notable buildings, and stone processing remains an important aspect of the local identity today.

Donji Humac is one of the older settlements on the island, with evidence of habitation in the area dating back to antiquity. Nearby, one can find the remains of early Christian structures and ancient sites, while the current layout of the village primarily originates from the period between the 17th and 19th centuries. A significant number of houses are built from Brač stone, featuring characteristic courtyards, water cisterns, and stone roofs.

The centre of the village is marked by the Church of St. Fabian and Sebastian, complete with a stone bell tower. Surrounding the church are smaller stone streets and squares that effectively illustrate what old Brač villages looked like before the advent of tourism. Donji Humac experiences little traffic and has a small population, allowing the village to maintain a fairly authentic appearance throughout the year.

One of the more notable attractions near the village is the Kopačina Cave, an important archaeological site where remnants of prehistoric life on Brač have been discovered. Adjacent to the cave is the well-known Konoba Kopačina, one of the island's most popular spots for lamb on a spit and traditional Brač dishes.

During the summer months, Donji Humac hosts several smaller local festivals and events. The most famous is the celebration of the feast day of St. Fabian and Sebastian, the village's patron saints, which includes a mass, procession, and evening gatherings featuring music and local cuisine. Occasionally, smaller fishing evenings, concerts, and events related to local associations and the tradition of stone masonry are also held in the summer.

Donji Humac is frequently visited by those wishing to explore the interior of Brač and discover places that are not solely tied to beaches and the coastline. Its central location on the island makes it a good starting point for exploring various parts of Brač by car or bicycle.

Parking is available along the main streets and smaller squares in the village, and due to the low traffic, it is generally not a problem to find a parking space.
