St. Fabian and Sebastian Church in Donji Humac | Stone Parish Church in the Heart of the Village

St. Fabian and Sebastian Church is situated in the centre of Donji Humac and serves as the primary religious building of the village. It is perched on a small rise among stone houses and narrow streets, with its bell tower dominating the old core of the village, visible from the approach to Donji Humac from the direction of Supetar and Nerežišća.

The current church was constructed in the 18th century on the site of an earlier church, during a period when the villages of Brač were expanding more significantly into the island's interior. Built from local Brač stone, the walls, steps, and details around the entrance clearly reflect the stone masonry tradition for which Donji Humac has been known for centuries.

The exterior of the church is quite simple and typical of inland Brač — robust stone walls, smaller windows, and a bell tower rising above the main square. The area surrounding the church is one of the main gathering places in the village, especially during holidays, processions, and summer festivities.

The interior is more modestly decorated than in larger Dalmatian churches along the coast, but this simpler appearance suits the character of the village well. Inside, there are stone altars, wooden details, and several older religious items connected to the history of Donji Humac and the surrounding Brač villages.

The church is dedicated to St. Fabian and St. Sebastian, the patrons of the village, whose feast day is traditionally marked by the gathering of locals and a procession through the village. Such processions and local festivities have long been among the main social events in Donji Humac throughout the year.

Particularly interesting is the space in front of the church, where one can see the typical architecture of an old Brač village — a stone square, cisterns, narrow streets, and houses built from the same white stone that has been quarried in the area for centuries.

The church can be reached on foot through the centre of Donji Humac, with parking available a few minutes away along the main road or in smaller squares within the village. As the village does not experience heavy traffic, the area around the church remains quite peaceful even during the summer season.

St. Fabian and Sebastian Church is not a major tourist attraction like the well-known Dalmatian cathedrals, but it effectively illustrates what traditional Brač villages looked like before the development of tourism and coastal resorts.
