Vela Planica Beach on Brač | Pebble Cove Beneath Steep Rocky Slopes

Vela Planica Beach is situated on the southern side of Brač, to the west of Murvice and east of Smrka Cove, in an area devoid of larger settlements or tourist facilities. The cove is tucked away beneath steep rocky cliffs and surrounded by pine trees, maquis, and high cliffs, giving the entire area a rather secluded feel even during the peak season.

The beach is of medium size, primarily consisting of fine pebbles and larger stone slabs along the edges of the cove. The water is exceptionally clear and transparent, with the deep blue colour typical of the southern side of Brač, where the depth increases rapidly just a few metres from the shore. The entry into the water is a mix of pebbles and rocky bottom, so most visitors opt for water shoes.

There is no paved road leading directly to Vela Planica. Access is usually via an unpaved path from the direction of Murvice or on foot along coastal trails that connect the southern coves of Brač. The final stretch to the beach traverses rocky terrain and is somewhat steeper, particularly when descending towards the sea. This is why the beach does not experience large crowds or day-trippers seeking easy access.

Parking is not officially arranged. Cars are typically left at widening spots along the unpaved road above the cove, followed by a short walk to the sea. During the summer, the number of parking spaces is limited as the area around the beach is not suited for a larger number of vehicles.

There are no beach bars, restaurants, shops, or showers at the beach itself. The cove is entirely natural and lacks additional facilities, so it is essential to bring sufficient water, food, and sun protection. Natural shade is only available along the edges of the beach beneath the pines and rocks, while the central part is exposed to the sun for most of the day.

Vela Planica is well-known among those seeking quieter and less developed beaches on Brač. Due to its location beneath high cliffs and the relatively enclosed cove, the water here is often very calm and clear, attracting some visitors for diving and exploring the rocky seabed.

The view from the cove towards the open sea and Hvar is particularly striking. With no houses or larger structures in the vicinity, the entire area feels very natural and quite different from the more developed beaches around Bol.

Vela Planica is not a beach for a quick drive and a few hours of swimming with facilities. It is better suited for those who prefer a quieter part of Brač's southern coast and who do not mind walking part of the way through rocky terrain and pine forest.
