Nerežišća is located in the central part of Brač, approximately 9 kilometres south of Supetar, at the crossroads of roads connecting the northern and southern sides of the island. Due to its position, the village has been an administrative, commercial, and economic centre of Brač for centuries. Before the rise of tourism in Bol and Supetar, Nerežišća was one of the most significant places on the island.
The settlement began to develop in the Middle Ages when residents gradually abandoned the coast due to pirate attacks and built communities inland. As a result, the old houses in Nerežišća appear more enclosed and compact compared to those in coastal towns. The stone streets, small courtyards, and narrow passages were constructed to provide protection from the wind, sun, and potential sea attacks.
Today, the old core of Nerežišća is one of the best-preserved historical settlements in the interior of Brač. The village features old palaces belonging to Brač's noble families, stone houses with vaults and courtyards, and several churches that reflect its historical significance.
The most famous symbol of Nerežišća is the small church of St. Peter and Paul, which has a pine tree growing directly from its roof. This unusual sight has attracted visitors for decades, as it appears almost surreal. The pine tree grows from the stone apse and has become one of the most recognisable motifs of Brač.
In the centre of the village stands the parish church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with a bell tower that dominates the entire settlement. Surrounding it are stone squares, old palaces, and narrow streets that take on a completely different atmosphere in the evenings compared to the tourist spots along the coast.
Although Nerežišća is not located by the sea, its position is one of the greatest advantages for visitors. From the village, it is relatively quick to reach some of Brač's most famous southern beaches. Roads lead from Nerežišća towards Murvica and the southern coast, leading to the coves of Vela Farska, Smrčeva Luka, Veli Zagradac, Mali Zagradac, and Vela Planica. These beaches are known for their very clear waters, gravel access, pine trees, and a much quieter atmosphere compared to Bol and Zlatni Rat.
Nerežišća also provides quick access to Vidova Gora, Blaca, Donji Humac, Škrip, and numerous hiking and cycling trails through the island's interior. Due to its central location, many people choose the village as a base for exploring Brač without the daily crowds found in larger tourist areas.
The village is also known for its tradition of stone masonry, olive growing, and viticulture. The surrounding area features numerous dry stone walls, old cisterns, and stone paths that wind through the hills and rocky terrain of the central part of the island.
During the summer, Nerežišća remains much quieter than coastal towns, yet it offers restaurants, taverns, cafés, wine bars, and several family-run farms. The fair of St. Margaret, held around 13th July, is particularly well-known, when the village centre fills with music, food stalls, and evening events.
Nerežišća is not a place for a traditional beach holiday but rather for those who wish to experience a different side of Brač — the old stone streets, the island's interior, historical villages, and southern coves that are still accessed through rocky terrain and pine forests.
