Mala Noćna Regata | A Unique Night Sailing Spectacle in Postira

The Mala Noćna Regata is one of the most recognisable summer events in Postira and one of the few regattas on the Adriatic that takes place at night. This event is traditionally held in August in the Postira harbour and is notable for its use of a natural phenomenon known as gažul – a night wind that descends from Vidova Gora towards Postira during summer evenings.

The roots of night sailing in Postira extend back over a century, to a time when local boats would venture out to sea for leisure and competition after a day’s work. The current Mala Noćna Regata was established in the mid-2000s when local enthusiasts revived this tradition, transforming it into an event that now attracts sailors, musicians, and numerous visitors.

What makes this event special is not just the competition but the entire atmosphere in the harbour. The promenade becomes a viewing platform, with illuminated sailing boats gliding just metres away from the audience, while the regatta is traditionally accompanied by the strains of Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik, after which the event is named.

Unlike traditional regattas that are observed from a distance, nearly the entire competition unfolds right by the promenade. Visitors can closely watch the manoeuvres of the sailing boats as they harness the changing night wind within the Postira harbour. Due to the small racing area and specific sailing conditions, the Mala Noćna Regata is regarded as one of the more technically interesting sailing events along the Croatian coast.

Over the years, many renowned Croatian sailors, Olympians, and athletes have participated in the regatta, which has grown beyond local boundaries to become a hallmark of summer events in Postira. Following the conclusion of the regatta, there is traditionally an announcement of the winners and an evening music programme in the village.

The Mala Noćna Regata typically takes place in early to mid-August, as part of the Postira Summer programme. The exact date varies from year to year, depending on the events calendar and weather conditions.
