Catacombs in Sutivan – Unique Early Christian Mausoleum by St. Roch's Church

The catacombs in Sutivan are among the most valuable early Christian monuments on the Croatian islands and represent one of the most significant archaeological sites on Brač. They are situated next to St. Roch's Church and the old local cemetery on a rise above the town centre, where one of Sutivan's most important historical sites can be found today.

Unlike the large underground catacombs seen in Rome, the Sutivan catacombs are actually an early Christian mausoleum – a burial structure erected between the 5th and 6th centuries. It is believed to have been established during the late antiquity period, when an important Christian community was developing in the area of present-day Sutivan. Due to its architectural significance and state of preservation, this site is considered one of the most important early Christian monuments in Dalmatia.

Archaeological research has uncovered remains of burial chambers, walls, and sacred buildings, confirming that this area was an important religious centre long before the establishment of the current settlement. It is presumed that the mausoleum was part of a larger early Christian complex associated with the cemetery and the church community of that time.

Notably, the site is located immediately adjacent to St. Roch's Church, the patron saint of Sutivan, which was built centuries later. This allows for a unique opportunity to trace different layers of history in one location – from late antiquity and the early Christian communities to the modern history of the area.

Today, the remains of the catacombs are partially visible within the grounds of the old cemetery, and the site is protected as a cultural heritage. Although it is not a classically organised tourist attraction with regular tours, it is an essential stop for all visitors interested in the history of Brač and the development of Christianity on the eastern Adriatic coast.

A visit to the catacombs is often combined with a tour of St. Roch's Church and the viewpoint located nearby. From this vantage point, there are stunning views of Sutivan, the Brač Channel, and the nearby coast, adding exceptional ambient value to the historical significance of the site.

The catacombs in Sutivan bear witness to over fifteen centuries of continuity in life and faith in this area and represent one of the most important, yet often underappreciated, cultural and historical monuments on the island of Brač.
