Catacombs in Sutivan – Unique Early Christian Mausoleum by St. Roch Church

The catacombs in Sutivan are among the most valuable early Christian monuments on Croatian islands and represent one of the most significant archaeological sites on Brač. They are located next to St. Roch Church and the old local cemetery on a hill above the town center, where one of the most important historical sites in Sutivan can be found today.

Unlike the large underground catacombs found in Rome, the Sutivan catacombs are actually an early Christian mausoleum – a burial structure built between the 5th and 6th centuries. It is believed to have originated during late antiquity, when an important Christian community was developing in the area of present-day Sutivan. Due to its architectural value and preservation, the site is considered one of the most important early Christian monuments in Dalmatia.

Archaeological research has uncovered remains of burial chambers, walls, and sacred buildings that confirm this area was an important religious center long before the establishment of the current settlement. It is assumed that the mausoleum was part of a larger early Christian complex associated with the cemetery and the contemporary church community.

Notably, the site is located immediately next to St. Roch Church, the patron saint of Sutivan, which was built centuries later. Thus, various layers of history can be traced in one location – from late antiquity and the early Christian communities to the modern history of the place.

Today, the remains of the catacombs are partially visible within the old cemetery area, and the site is protected as a cultural heritage. Although it is not a traditionally organized tourist attraction with regular tours, it is an essential point for all visitors interested in the history of Brač and the development of Christianity on the eastern Adriatic coast.

A visit to the catacombs is often combined with a tour of St. Roch Church and the viewpoint located next to the church. From this position, there is a beautiful view of Sutivan, the Brač Channel, and the nearby coast, giving the site exceptional ambient value in addition to its historical significance.

The catacombs in Sutivan testify to over fifteen centuries of continuity of life and faith in this area and represent one of the most important, yet often underappreciated, cultural-historical monuments of the island of Brač.
