Vela Pogorila Beach – A Tranquil Cove with a Sandy Seabed near Bogomolje
Vela Pogorila Beach is situated in the cove of the same name on the northeastern coast of Hvar Island, beneath Bogomolje. It is one of the quiet coves on the eastern part of the island that is not easily stumbled upon – visitors must descend from the main island road towards the sea, leaving behind the settlement, traffic, and tourist crowds.
At the end of the cove, there is a small natural shore surrounded by rocky slopes and Mediterranean vegetation. The beach itself is predominantly pebbly, while the seabed within the cove is largely sandy. This combination gives the water a lighter hue and makes entering the sea pleasant.
Vela Pogorila lacks a beach bar, sun loungers, showers, or other typical amenities. People come here for the peace, clean waters, and the feeling of being far removed from the more frequented areas of Hvar.
A Small Beach on the Northern Side of Eastern Hvar
Bogomolje is located inland on the island, while its numerous coves descend towards the northern and southern coasts.
Vela Pogorila is part of the northern chain of coves and is located just west of Mala Pogorila. This entire area of Hvar is much less developed than the regions around Jelsa, Stari Grad, or Hvar Town, resulting in smaller, quieter, and more natural coves.
There are only a few buildings by the sea, with no proper tourist settlement. This is one of the main advantages of Vela Pogorila – even during the summer, the atmosphere remains significantly quieter than at the larger beaches on the island.
Pebbly Shore and Sandy Seabed
The beach itself is characterised by finer pebbles and stones.
Along the edges of the cove, the pebbles transition into natural rocks, allowing for a choice between a classic entry from the beach and swimming from the rockier parts of the shore.
Upon entering the water, the seabed gradually shifts to a sandier area. As a result, the water in the shallows is often very bright and clear, especially in calm weather.
Thus, Vela Pogorila is not a sandy beach in the traditional sense – one does not lie on sand on the shore – but the sandy seabed is one of its most pleasant features.
Entering the Water and Depth
Entry into the sea from the main pebbly area is relatively straightforward.
The depth increases gradually, without a sudden drop right by the shore, making swimming comfortable even for children who can already enter the water independently.
However, one should not expect an exceptionally long shallow area like that at Mlaska near Sućuraj. After the initial shallows, the water gradually becomes deep enough for normal swimming.
Near the rocks at the edges of the cove, the seabed becomes more varied, making these areas more interesting for snorkelling.
Natural Shade
The slopes around the cove are covered with Mediterranean vegetation, and some parts of the shore offer a bit of natural shade.
The amount of shade changes throughout the day, and one should not assume that the entire beach will be sheltered from the sun.
For a full day’s stay during July and August, it is advisable to bring a sunshade or other protection, especially if visiting with children.
The advantage of the northern orientation is felt later in the afternoon when part of the cove enters the shade earlier than the completely open southern beaches.
No Crowds or Tourist Infrastructure
Vela Pogorila does not have the typical organised beach infrastructure.
Do not expect:
beach bar
restaurant
public toilet
shower
sunbed and sunshade rental
shop right by the beach
This means that for a few hours or a whole day by the sea, one must bring enough water, food, and everything else needed.
This is precisely why the beach remains tranquil. Most visitors come with a purpose, and there is little through traffic.
How to Reach Vela Pogorila
The cove can be accessed from the area of Bogomolje.
From the main island road, one must take a local route towards the northern coast. The final part of the approach leads down an unpaved road, so the journey takes longer than one might conclude based solely on the distance on a map.
The unpaved road is not necessarily a problem for an ordinary car, but one should drive slowly. The condition of the road can change after winter, heavy rains, and during the summer season.
With a very low vehicle, it is advisable to assess the conditions before descending to the cove itself.
Vela Pogorila is not a beach located next to an asphalt road where one can park just a few metres from the towel. The slightly more challenging access is one of the reasons why there are no large crowds here.
Parking
There is no large organised public parking near the beach.
In the area of the cove, there is limited space along the access road and buildings, but care should be taken not to occupy private parking or block access to houses.
It is best to leave the vehicle in a suitable widening or another safe place from which the last part can be reached on foot.
During the peak season, it is advisable to arrive early as the number of suitable parking spots in small Hvar coves is naturally limited.
A Good Beach for Families Seeking Peace
Vela Pogorila can be very pleasant for families, especially due to the pebbly entry and sandier seabed.
On the other hand, the lack of toilets, showers, and catering facilities means it is not the most practical choice for parents who want everything immediately by the beach.
For a family willing to bring food, water, a sunshade, and equipment for the whole day, the cove offers something much more valuable – peaceful swimming without large crowds.
For very small children, more organised beaches with simpler road access are more practical.
When is the Sea Calmest?
Vela Pogorila is well sheltered from southern and western winds due to its location.
This can be very beneficial during a south wind when the beaches on the southern coast of Hvar are exposed to waves, while the northern coves remain calmer.
Conversely, during stronger bora winds and winds from the north, conditions can be completely different.
Therefore, it always makes sense to check the wind direction before heading out on eastern Hvar and choose between the northern and southern sides of the island accordingly.
Arriving by Boat
Vela Pogorila also functions well as a natural anchorage.
The cove is deep enough for smaller and medium-sized vessels, and the sandy seabed is suitable for anchoring in the right spot.
There are no marinas or organised commercial berths, so visitors come here precisely for the natural character of the cove.
If planning to stay longer or overnight at anchor, it is essential to monitor the forecast and winds from the northern side.
Vela Pogorila and Mala Pogorila
The two neighbouring coves are very close to each other, but each has its own character.
Mala Pogorila is somewhat more compact and has more houses around it, while Vela Pogorila appears more open and natural.
Both have pebbly shores and sandy parts of the seabed, making them good choices for guests seeking quieter swimming on the northern side of eastern Hvar.
If staying in Bogomolje for a few days, it is worth visiting them separately rather than trying to quickly cover as many coves as possible in one day.
Who Will Enjoy Vela Pogorila the Most?
The beach is best suited for guests who appreciate lesser-known natural coves and do not mind a few kilometres of slower driving along local and unpaved roads.
It is a good choice for couples, families seeking peace, guests staying on eastern Hvar, and anyone wanting to escape from organised tourist beaches.
If beach bars, sun loungers, and completely easy access by car are priorities, another location should be chosen.
If one is looking for tranquillity, a small pebbly shore, clear waters, and a sandy seabed without large crowds, Vela Pogorila is indeed one of the beaches that make exploring the Bogomolje area worthwhile.
