Island of Hvar

BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION

Hvar is a central Dalmatian island. He settled in the Split-Dalmatia County. It is 72 km long, and the widest part is 10.5 km in the middle. The total length of the coast is 254.2 km, and the total area is 299.7 km², which makes it the fourth largest island in Croatia. The highest peak is St. Nikola, 628 m high. The beautiful Mediterranean climate, pine forest, vineyards and lavender fields make it one of the most attractive islands in the Adriatic. Due to the large number of sunny days, it is often called Sunny Hvar. Hvar is connected to Split several times a day by ferry and catamaran lines. There is a small airport with a grass track in the old town field.

DESTINATIONS

The most attractive destinations are the towns of Hvar and Stari Grad, and Jelsa, Sućuraj, Vrboska and Milna are no less important. Smaller places are suitable for those who want complete peace and isolation, such as Sveta Nedjelja, Svirče, Zastražišće, Selca, Zavala and others. Nevertheless, the city of Hvar jumps in the number of visits because of its cultural and entertainment offer. It is suitable for young people and those who want nightlife. A very good gastronomic offer completes the accommodation offer.

CULTURE, HISTORY AND SIGHTS

Today's name of the island is of Greek origin (Greek Pharos - lighthouse). From this name, the Romans formed the name Pharia. In the early Middle Ages, Croats changed it to Hvar. The local population calls it Hvor ii For. The island was inhabited 6000 years ago. In the Purkin kuk locality, megaliths were found, and in Markova and Grapeva caves, the oldest depictions of a ship in Europe were found on a fragment of a ceramic vase. Today, the island has 11,500 inhabitants who are mainly engaged in tourism, agriculture and fishing.

BEACHES

The beaches on Hvar are mostly rocky and pebbly. They are located in bays, surrounded by pine forest and crystal clear sea. There are also natural sandy beaches on Hvar, mostly on the north side of the island. Near Ivan Dolac, Zavala and Milna there are beaches with fine sand suitable for small children. Shallow sandy beaches in deep bays can be found near Jelsa and in the bay of Mlaska near Sućurj, and on the beach Česminica in Sućurj. Those looking for solitude or fans of nudism can hide in the many rocky parts of Hvar.

OTHER CONTENTS

As a destination, Hvar offers something for everyone. Young people in Hvar and Jelsa have clubs and bars that offer guaranteed entertainment, and those who are a bit older or families with small children can find suitable quiet destinations for themselves. Gourmets and those looking for an active vacation will also come and leave satisfied. All along the island of Hvar there are a large number of restaurants and taverns that offer fresh fish and excellent local Hvar wine.

WHAT TO DO AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXCURSIONS

Hvar is full of interesting places to visit, and we have already mentioned them above. Split, the largest Dalmatian city with an extremely rich cultural offer, is nearby. There is the possibility of one-day trips and boat rentals to neighboring islands. Every day, Jelsa is connected to Bol on Brač by a catamaran ferry.

ACCOMMODATION

The town of Hvar has the largest number of hotel accommodations. There are still hotels in Stari Grad and Jelsa. There is also a large number of private landlords who offer excellent accommodation. Camping enthusiasts also have a wide range of campsites in Jelsa, Stari Grad, Zablaće and other places, while boaters have at their disposal the ACI Marina Palmižana on the Paklin Islands opposite Hvar.
