Paklina Beach in Ivan Dolac – a tranquil pebble cove for families on the southern coast of Hvar

Paklina Beach is situated to the east of the centre of Ivan Dolac, in a quieter part of the coastline that can be reached from the main Velo Žalo beach in just a few minutes on foot. It is nestled in a small natural cove between rocky sections of the shore and is one of the more pleasant beaches in Ivan Dolac for families with children.

The shore is covered with finer pebbles and gravel, making entry into the water easy, and the water is characteristically clear and turquoise. Behind the beach, Mediterranean greenery begins, while the rocky edges of the cove provide an interesting area for swimming and snorkelling.

Paklina is quieter than the main beach in Ivan Dolac, yet it is not completely isolated – it is connected to the central part of the village, restaurants, and other amenities via a promenade.

A small pebble cove east of the centre

From the main beach in Ivan Dolac, a coastal promenade leads east along the rocky shore, passing by apartments and designated sunbathing areas.

After approximately 300 metres, you will arrive at Paklina cove.

The beach is not large, and it is flanked by low rocks on either side. This gives it a more intimate feel compared to Velo Žalo, making it a preferred choice for guests who wish to stay close to the village while avoiding the busiest part of the coastline.

Beyond the next rocky cape, there is another small beach, and further east lies Feronija.

Fine pebbles and easy entry into the water

The central part of Paklina consists of finer gravel and smooth pebbles.

Entry into the water is gentle, with no large rocks immediately along the shore. The seabed gradually deepens, making the cove suitable for children and less confident swimmers.

Larger stones and rocks appear along the edges, so water shoes are advisable if you venture beyond the central part of the beach.

In calm weather, the water is very clear, and the light sandy bottom of the shallows gives it a lovely turquoise hue.

One of the better family beaches in Ivan Dolac

Paklina is particularly pleasant for families looking for a smaller beach without the need for a long walk or drive.

Children have easy access to the water, and the cove is not directly adjacent to the main road. The coastal promenade connects it to the village centre, making it easy to return for food, drinks, or ice cream.

As the beach is small, during July and August, several families can occupy a good portion of it. Therefore, the best option is to arrive in the morning.

How much shade is available?

Behind the beach and along the edges, pine and other Mediterranean greenery grow, providing some natural shade at the back of the cove.

However, do not expect the entire shore to be shaded throughout the day. The central part of the beach remains quite exposed to the sun.

If you plan to stay at Paklina for several hours, bringing your own sunshade is advisable, especially in the height of summer.

A quieter atmosphere than the main beach

Velo Žalo is larger and more convenient if you want restaurants and other facilities right by the beach.

Paklina is different. Here, the shore is smaller, more natural, and somewhat quieter, and there is no sense of a central village beach between the shore and the surrounding apartments.

In the early morning or outside of July and August, Paklina can be very tranquil.

During peak season, this cove is not completely empty, but it is generally less busy than the main bathing area in the centre of Ivan Dolac.

No beach bar directly on the beach

There is no traditional beach bar or larger hospitality establishment right on the shore.

This is not a major issue as the centre of Ivan Dolac is only a few minutes' walk away. There, you will find cafés, restaurants, shops, and other essential amenities.

For a few hours of swimming, it is sufficient to bring water, while returning on foot for lunch or coffee is easy.

Snorkelling

For exploring the underwater world, it is best to head towards the rocky areas of the cove.

Under the surface, pebbles, larger rocks, and stone slabs alternate, and small fish tend to gather around them.

Paklina is not a place where you need to swim far out to sea. The most interesting part is right along the shore and the rocks that enclose the cove.

In calm conditions, visibility is excellent.

Open southern coast and the sirocco

Like other beaches in Ivan Dolac, Paklina faces the open southern side of Hvar.

In calm weather, the sea is almost completely clear and very pleasant for swimming. When a stronger sirocco blows, waves enter the cove, and conditions can change rapidly.

For families and less confident swimmers, the best days are those with calm weather or a light summer maestral.

Views towards Šćedro and Korčula

From the sea and the more open parts of the coast, there is a characteristic view of southern Hvar towards Šćedro and Korčula.

Behind the beach, the steep slopes of Ivan Dolac rise, adorned with vineyards of Plavac Mali.

This combination of white rocks, clear waters, and vineyards on the slopes is one of the reasons why this part of Hvar is completely different from the northern coast of the island.

How to get there on foot?

If you are already in Ivan Dolac, Paklina is one of the beaches that does not warrant a drive.

From the main beach Velo Žalo, follow the coastal promenade eastwards. The path runs alongside the sea and passes by rocky bathing areas and smaller pebbly sections.

It takes approximately five minutes of easy walking, or about 300 metres, to reach Paklina.

The path is not demanding and is suitable for families with children.

Where to park?

For a day visit, the most practical option is to leave your car in the parking area in the central part of Ivan Dolac, near the entrance to the main beach, and walk the last few hundred metres along the coastal promenade.

There are narrow local access roads leading to Paklina, but there is no reason to search for a parking spot right next to the shore. The roads along the eastern part of the coast are narrow, and turning and parking space is limited.

If you are staying in Ivan Dolac, it is best to leave your car at your accommodation.

Paklina and Feronija are not the same beach

East of Paklina, the coast continues with several smaller bathing spots, and further on is Feronija.

Paklina and Feronija are two distinct beaches.

Paklina is closer to the centre of Ivan Dolac and is located next to the area of the former campsite of the same name, while Feronija is further east.

This is useful to know as the names of smaller beaches in this part of the coast are often confused.

When is the best time to visit?

During the peak season, the best time to arrive is before 10 am.

The sea is calmest early in the morning, there is more space on the small shore, and it is easier to find a spot along the edge of the beach where there is some shade.

Late afternoon is also pleasant when the sun is less intense.

For a completely different experience of Paklina, it is best to choose June or September, when there are significantly fewer bathers in this part of the coast.

Who is Paklina best suited for?

Paklina is excellent for guests staying in Ivan Dolac who want a small family beach within walking distance of their accommodation, but find the main beach too crowded.

It is particularly suitable for families with children, couples, and guests who enjoy small pebble beaches surrounded by rocks.

There are not many additional facilities, but this is precisely what gives it a quieter character. Everything you need is just a few minutes' walk away in the village, while the beach is primarily enjoyed for its clear waters and swimming.
