Mina Beach – sandy beach with a long shallow area in Jelsa

Mina Beach is one of the most well-known beaches in Jelsa and is among the best spots for swimming with young children. It is located east of the centre, about a kilometre from the Jelsa waterfront, in a quiet cove that is most pleasantly reached by walking along the shore.

What sets Mina apart from most beaches on Hvar is its sandy bottom and very long shallow area. The water gradually deepens, allowing children significantly more space to play in the shallows compared to traditional pebble beaches on the island.

Along the cove, there are pine trees, well-maintained sunbathing areas, showers, sun loungers, and catering facilities, making Mina a beach where one can comfortably spend most of the day.

Sand and very shallow water

The main feature of Mina is its sandy beach, but the overall appearance of the cove is not uniform.

Next to the sandy area, there are well-maintained concrete platforms, while the edges of the cove transition into more natural rocky and earthy surfaces among the pines. This allows visitors to choose between spots right next to the sand and slightly quieter sunbathing areas on the sides.

The most notable aspect is the water. The sandy bottom extends quite far from the shore, and the depth increases very gradually.

As a result, an adult may need to walk quite a distance through the water before reaching a depth suitable for proper swimming. For small children, this is a significant advantage.

One of the best beaches for young children

Mina has earned its reputation as a family beach for good reason.

There is no sudden drop into deeper water, and the sandy bottom is more pleasant for children's play than sharp stones or large pebbles. In the shallows, children can walk, play, and swim for a long time without needing to venture into deeper water.

During the season, a small aquapark is also set up in the sea, which is another reason why Mina is particularly popular among families.

If you are looking for a beach in Jelsa for a child who is just learning to swim or simply enjoys spending time in the shallows, Mina is one of the first places to consider.

Natural shade under the pines

Another significant advantage is the shade.

Large pines grow on both sides of the cove, providing shelter from direct sunlight throughout the day. The shade is not limited to just a few small trees behind the beach; the pines are an important part of the entire area around the cove.

This is particularly beneficial for families who stay at the beach for several hours.

However, on the open sandy part, one should not rely solely on natural shade, as umbrellas are also available.

Concrete platforms, showers, and changing cabins

Mina is not a wild beach.

On one side of the cove, there are concrete sunbathing platforms, and showers and changing cabins are available. Sun loungers and umbrellas can also be rented.

This infrastructure makes Mina more practical for a full day’s stay compared to many smaller coves around Jelsa, where you need to bring almost everything with you.

At the same time, the pines and more natural edges of the cove prevent the entire area from looking like a completely urbanised beach.

Mina Beach Restaurant & Lounge Bar by the beach

There is no need to return to the centre of Jelsa for food and drink.

Right next to the cove is the Mina Beach Restaurant & Lounge Bar, with terraces right by the sea. Here, you can sit down for a coffee or cocktail, as well as enjoy a full lunch or dinner featuring fish, meat, and Mediterranean dishes.

This is particularly convenient if you are spending the whole day at Mina. Swimming can be interrupted for lunch, and afterwards, you can return to the beach without leaving the cove.

There are also other catering facilities in the vicinity, so Mina is not a place where you need to bring an entire day’s supply of food and drink.

Walking from the centre of Jelsa

One of the better reasons to choose Mina is that a car is generally not needed to get there.

From the Jelsa waterfront, it is about one kilometre, and the beach can be reached by a pleasant walk along the shore. The path goes through the coastal part of Jelsa and passes by restaurants, cafés, and tourist facilities.

For guests staying in the centre, this is often more practical than searching for parking right by the beach.

Mina can also be accessed by car via a local road, and parking spaces are available in the surrounding area, but during the peak summer season, do not expect that the nearest spot will always be free.

What is Mina like for swimming?

There is an interesting difference between the needs of children and adult swimmers here.

For small children, the long shallow area is a great advantage. For someone who wants to swim in deeper water right away, it may require quite a bit of walking from the shore.

Once you move out of the shallowest part of the cove, the water becomes deep enough for normal swimming, while the shape of the cove allows for pleasant bathing in calmer weather.

The sandy bottom gives the water a characteristic lighter, greenish-turquoise colour that is not common along Hvar's rocky shores.

Popular beach – not a place for complete solitude

Mina is not a hidden cove visited by just a few people.

The proximity to Jelsa, sandy bottom, shallow waters, shade, and facilities mean that it is very popular during July and August, especially among families.

If your goal is complete silence and an almost empty shore, it is better to seek out one of the more remote coves east of Jelsa.

However, when a safe and gradual entry into the water, shade, showers, food, and easy access are important, Mina is hard to beat.

Mina or Grebišće?

Both Mina and Grebišće are known for their sandy bottoms and long shallow areas, so they are often compared.

Mina is closer to the centre of Jelsa and is easier to reach on foot. It has a more pronounced character as an urban family beach, with well-maintained platforms and facilities right by the shore.

Grebišće is about a kilometre further east and has a slightly more distinct feel of a separate cove away from the town.

For a family staying in the centre of Jelsa who wants a beach they can walk to daily, Mina is usually the more practical choice.
