Vitarnja Beach – a small pebble cove between Jelsa and Vrboska

Vitarnja Beach is located on the northern side of the Jelsa bay, along the coastal path that leads from Jelsa to Vrboska. It is a small pebble beach situated in the tourist area of Vitarnja, close enough to the centre to reach on foot, yet far enough from the busiest part of the Jelsa waterfront.

Vitarnja is not a large, well-equipped town beach. This stretch of coastline features a series of small coves, rocky areas, concrete sunbathing spots, and entry points into the sea, with the Google pin for Beach Vitarnja marking one of the most pleasant small pebble coves along this stretch.

A small pebble beach with very clear waters

The main part of the beach consists of a short pebble shore, while the edges are lined with rocks and a stony coastline.

The water is clear and on calm days displays striking blue and turquoise hues. Entry is over pebbles and smaller stones, with more rocks towards the edges, so water shoes may be beneficial for those who find rocky surfaces uncomfortable.

The beach is not large, which gives it a more intimate character, but this also means that during the peak season, available space can fill up quickly.

Vitarnja is more of a coastal area than just a beach

When discussing Vitarnja, it is useful to know that locally, this term refers to the entire coastal area north of Jelsa.

Along the coast, there are several swimming spots – small shores, natural rocks, and arranged areas – so it is not uncommon for visitors to refer to different points along the same coastline as “Vitarnja.”

This Google Maps pin refers to a small pebble shore, but if it is busy, just a few minutes' walk away, other entry points into the sea can be found.

Tirkiz Beach Bar is located right by the cove

Adjacent to this small cove is Tirkiz Beach Bar, one of the more well-known beach bars in this part of the coast.

The bar is convenient for coffee, cold drinks, or cocktails during the day, so there is no need to bring all your refreshments to Vitarnja. It is just a few steps from the sea and is particularly linked to swimming in this stretch of coastline.

Thanks to the beach bar, Vitarnja has a slightly livelier character compared to the completely natural coves further towards Vrboska.

Is there any natural shade?

Pine trees grow along the coastal path and around certain parts of Vitarnja, so there are shaded spots during walks along the edges of the coast.

However, on the small pebble shore itself, one should not expect the entire beach to be in natural shade throughout the day.

If planning to stay for several hours, especially in the height of summer, it is advisable to have your own sun protection or to use the arranged areas near the beach bar when available.

Walking from the centre of Jelsa

One of the main advantages of Vitarnja is its easy access.

From the centre of Jelsa, one heads along the northern side of the bay, behind the Pumpurele breakwater, and continues along the coastal path towards Vrboska. The route is flat and very pleasant for walking, much of it running alongside pines and the sea.

It takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes of leisurely walking to reach this part of Vitarnja from the centre of Jelsa, depending on the starting point.

This route is also very popular among cyclists, and if continued further along the coast, it is about four kilometres to Vrboska.

Access by car is also possible

Vitarnja is accessible by road as well.

The coastal road is narrow and partly serves pedestrians and cyclists, so it is important to drive slowly and carefully, especially during the summer.

There are parking spaces in the wider area of Vitarnja, but it is unrealistic to expect a large organised car park right next to every small shore. The municipality of Jelsa manages Vitarnja among its suburban parking areas.

If staying in the centre of Jelsa, walking is usually simpler than driving those few minutes and searching for a free spot.

How suitable is it for families with children?

The small pebble beach can be pleasant for families looking for a quieter swimming spot near Jelsa.

Entry into the sea is straightforward, but Vitarnja does not have an exceptionally long shallow area like Mina. Therefore, children who are less confident swimmers should still be kept under usual supervision here.

The advantage is that the beach is small, the water is clear, and drinks and other basic refreshments are available right by the cove.

If the main criterion is very shallow water for small children, Mina is a better choice. However, if a smaller cove and a walk along the northern coast of Jelsa are desired, Vitarnja is more interesting.

A good choice for morning swims

Vitarnja works particularly well for a short trip to the sea.

One can walk from the centre without a car, have a swim for an hour or two, and return to Jelsa along the same coastal path.

This is why it is popular among guests staying in apartments in this part of Jelsa, where the sea practically begins right outside their door.

For a full day with many amenities, Mina is better equipped, but for simple swimming in clear waters, a small shore, and a beach bar just a few steps away, Vitarnja offers a very good combination.
