Česminica Beach Sućuraj – shallow waters, natural shade, and easy access

Česminica Beach is the main local beach in Sućuraj and one of the most convenient options for swimming at the eastern end of Hvar Island. It is located in a bay of the same name on the southern side of the town, approximately 200–300 metres from the centre, making it easily accessible on foot.

Česminica does not resemble a large open Adriatic beach. The bay is sufficiently sheltered and gentle, with a shoreline that combines finer pebbles, rocky sections, and paved concrete areas. The most notable feature is found in the water: after a pebbly entrance, the seabed transitions to a shallow sandy bottom, making the beach particularly suitable for families with young children and swimmers who prefer a gradual entry into the sea.

With its easy access, natural shade, and basic facilities, Česminica serves more as a functional family beach than a secluded cove. If you are staying in Sućuraj, it is a place you can visit without extensive planning, driving, or carrying everything needed for a full day.

Pebbles on the shore, sand in the sea

The shoreline at Česminica is not entirely uniform. The most pleasant areas for traditional swimming are covered in pebbles, while rocky and paved surfaces suitable for sunbathing are found along the edges.

Entry into the sea is one of the beach's greatest advantages. Initially, you step over small stones and pebbles, but the seabed quickly becomes sandy and remains relatively shallow. This means that the depth increases more gradually than at many rocky beaches on Hvar.

For children who enjoy playing in shallow waters for extended periods, this is significantly more practical than coves where you immediately enter deep water.

Ample natural shade

Behind the beach, trees provide natural shade throughout the day, so it is not necessary to spend the entire visit in direct sunlight.

The sun is most abundant in the morning, while certain areas are in shadow earlier in the afternoon.

In July and August, shaded spots are particularly sought after, so if you arrive later, it may be wise to bring your own sun protection for a full day’s stay.

A beach for families with children

Česminica is one of the more practical family beaches in the Sućuraj area.

The reasons extend beyond the shallow sandy seabed. The beach is close to the town, access is straightforward, there is shade, and the swimming area is separated from maritime traffic by buoys. Showers and toilet facilities are also available.

For parents with young children, it is especially convenient that returning to the apartment, shop, or centre of Sućuraj does not involve driving several kilometres across the island.

Showers, toilets, and a café bar

Česminica is not a wild beach without infrastructure.

The beach is equipped with showers and toilets, and there is a café bar nearby where you can grab a drink and take a break from swimming. Local tourist sources highlight this combination of amenities as part of the main local beach.

Some of the shoreline is paved, providing a flatter surface for lying down and sunbathing.

During the season, sun loungers may also be available; the municipal management plan for Česminica allows for a limited number of loungers, so it is not a beach entirely covered with commercial offerings.

Access to the beach

The easiest way to reach Česminica from the centre of Sućuraj is on foot.

The beach is located just below the local road and promenade, without the need for a long descent down a steep path or walking over rocky terrain. It can also be accessed by car, scooter, or bicycle, and there is even access by sea.

Due to its relatively flat and straightforward access, it is officially noted as a beach suitable for individuals with reduced mobility. This is a significant difference compared to many natural coves on Hvar that are reached by steep paths.

Parking

You can drive to the area just above the beach, but Česminica does not have a large designated parking area right by the shore.

The number of spaces in the immediate vicinity is limited, so during the peak summer season, it is not advisable to rely on being able to park right by the beach. If you are staying in Sućuraj, arriving on foot is far simpler.

For guests who come solely for swimming by car, it is best to park where permitted in the broader area around Česminica and continue the last part on foot.

A good beach after arriving by ferry

Česminica is also useful for travellers arriving on Hvar by ferry from Drvenik – Sućuraj.

It is located on the opposite side of the town from the ferry terminal, but the whole of Sućuraj is small enough that you can quickly reach the beach through the settlement. Therefore, it can be a practical choice for a first swim after arriving on the island or a last swim before returning to the mainland.

However, it is not directly next to the ferry terminal, so it is better described as the town beach of Sućuraj rather than a "beach by the ferry".

When Česminica is the best choice

Česminica is not a beach worth crossing the entire island of Hvar for if you are seeking a completely secluded and wild cove. Its greatest value lies elsewhere.

It is excellent for guests staying in Sućuraj, families with children, older swimmers, and anyone who values easy access, shallow waters, shade, showers, and toilets.

Those wishing to explore the quieter coves of eastern Hvar can continue towards Mlaska, Perna, Prapatna, and other bays around Sućuraj, but for daily swimming without a car, Česminica is hard to beat.
