Valica and Blace Beaches in Sućuraj – Two Tranquil Coves between Česminica and Perna
Valica and Blace are two smaller coves located on the southern side of eastern Hvar, positioned between the main beach of Sućuraj, Česminica, and the more natural cove of Perna. They are approximately 1 to 2 kilometres from the centre of Sućuraj, making them close enough for daily swimming, yet quieter than the beaches immediately adjacent to the town.
This stretch of coastline is interesting as it represents a transition between the more developed bathing areas of Sućuraj and the almost wild southern coast that begins further west. Access to Valica and Blace is relatively straightforward on foot, by car, scooter, or bicycle, while beyond Blace, reaching the next coves becomes significantly more challenging.
The shoreline is varied, featuring pebbly, rocky, and partially concreted sections, allowing visitors to choose between easier entries into the sea, sunbathing on rocks, or flatter areas along the coast.
Valica – Closer to Sućuraj
Valica is the first of the two coves when heading west from Sućuraj towards Perna.
Its location is close enough to the town that it can be reached on foot, without the need for a special outing or a full day’s planning. This makes it a good choice for those seeking a quieter swimming experience than Česminica, without having to drive several kilometres along a dirt road to more distant beaches.
The shoreline is a mix of natural stone, pebbles, and more developed areas, so it does not have the appearance of a completely wild cove. Nevertheless, the atmosphere is considerably calmer than at the main town beach.
Blace – The Last Easily Accessible Cove on This Stretch
Blace is located further west, closer to Perna.
It is particularly interesting as this is roughly where the easier access along the southern coast ends. Beyond Blace, there is no road following the coastline, so access to Prapatna, Židigova, and other western coves requires a boat, more challenging walking, or special access routes from inland.
As such, Blace represents a sort of boundary between the more accessible bathing spots around Sućuraj and the much wilder part of the southern coast.
If a more natural environment is desired, but without the strenuous hike to Prapatna or Židigova, Blace offers a good compromise.
Pebbles, Rocks, and Concrete Surfaces
Valica and Blace differ from beaches that feature a single large, well-maintained pebbly stretch.
Here, the coastline changes from metre to metre. In some places, there are pebbles, in others, natural rocks, while along parts of the houses and access areas, there are concreted surfaces suitable for lying down and easier entry into the sea.
This variety is particularly appealing to visitors who prefer smaller beaches with fewer people. Instead of one central bathing area, one can find a smaller section of the coast that better suits their swimming and sunbathing preferences.
Suitable for Families with Children
Locally, Valica and Blace stand out as coves appropriate for young children.
For families, it is particularly practical that they do not require a long descent down a steep path or access solely by boat. It is possible to reach the area of the coves by car, and walking from Sućuraj is also feasible.
The most pleasant choice is to opt for the pebbly sections with easier access to the sea, while the rocky positions are better suited for adult swimmers and more proficient swimmers.
If the priority is an exceptionally long and shallow sandy sea, Mlaska and Perna are better options. Valica and Blace are more interesting due to their combination of easy accessibility, smaller coves, and less crowding.
No Major Tourist Infrastructure
Valica and Blace are not typical well-equipped tourist beaches with a range of hospitality facilities.
One should not expect a beach bar, large restaurant, sunbed rentals, or complete infrastructure immediately by each bathing spot.
Since they are relatively close to Sućuraj, this is not a significant issue for a short stay. For a few hours of swimming, it is advisable to bring water, some food, and sun protection.
For a full day’s stay requiring a toilet, shower, shop, and restaurant, a more practical choice would be Mlaska.
How to Get There
Both coves can be accessed on foot, by car, scooter, bicycle, and boat.
From the centre of Sućuraj, one should head west along the southern side of the island, towards Česminica and Perna. Valica is closer, while Blace continues further along the same stretch of coast.
The distance from the centre ranges approximately from 1 km for the nearer parts of Valica to about 2 km for the area of Blace.
For guests staying in Sućuraj, walking is quite realistic, especially early in the morning or later in the afternoon when it is not the hottest part of the day.
Arriving by Car and Parking
It is possible to reach the area of the coves by car or scooter, which significantly distinguishes them from Prapatna and Židigova.
However, one should not expect a large, well-organised public car park right by the sea. Vehicles should be left in available spots along the access road or in designated areas where parking is permitted and does not obstruct local residents and other vehicles.
During July and August, it is advisable to arrive early as the most practical spots along the coast are limited.
The Southern Side and the Influence of the South Wind
Both coves are located on the southern side of Hvar.
In calm weather, the sea can be very pleasant, but with stronger southerly winds, the southern coast naturally experiences more waves. One of the advantages of Sućuraj is the possibility of quickly crossing to the northern side of the island, for example, towards Mlaska.
Due to the narrowness of eastern Hvar, it is often not necessary to give up swimming – it is sufficient to choose the side of the island that is more sheltered from the current wind.
Valica and Blace or Česminica?
If one seeks the simplest possible swimming experience with a toilet, shower, and other facilities, Česminica is more practical.
Valica and Blace have another advantage: they are smaller, quieter, and provide a greater sense of swimming in a small island cove, yet are still easily accessible.
Thus, they are a good choice for guests staying a few days in Sućuraj who wish to change beaches without a long journey to another part of the island.
Valica and Blace or Perna?
Perna is more natural and known for its large area of shallow sandy seabed, but it is accessed via a poorer road and lacks the conveniences of Valica and Blace.
Valica and Blace are closer to Sućuraj and simpler for daily visits.
Those seeking a wilder environment and particularly sandy sea will likely choose Perna. Those wanting a short distance, easier access, and quieter swimming away from the centre will find Valica and Blace more sensible.
