Zogon Beach – A Small Cove with a Large Rock and Natural Shade in Sveta Nedjelja, Hvar

Zogon Beach is one of the most recognisable bathing spots in Sveta Nedjelja, a small village on the southern coast of Hvar Island. It is located in a small cove to the east of the village centre, with its most notable feature being a large rock that rises right next to the beach, providing pleasant shade for part of the day. Surrounded by rocky slopes, with exceptionally clear waters and views of the open sea, Zogon is one of the few natural beaches in Sveta Nedjelja where visitors can comfortably settle right on the shore.

Unlike much of the coastline in the area, which is dominated by rocky surfaces for sunbathing, Zogon features a small beach made up of fine gravel and similar sandy material. The beach is close enough to the village to reach on foot, yet it is sheltered from surrounding houses and roads. Due to limited space, it can become quite crowded during July and August.

The Large Rock that Gives the Beach Its Unique Appearance and Shade

The most interesting detail of Zogon is the large, almost rounded rock located at the back of the beach. Its size dominates the small cove, making the beach easily recognisable in photographs.

The rock casts shade over part of the beach for part of the day, which is particularly beneficial during the summer months when the sun is at its strongest. The shade shifts depending on the sun's position, so not the entire beach is equally protected throughout the day. For guests wishing to spend several hours on the beach, it is advisable to bring their own sun protection.

Next to the rock, there is a smaller area for towels, while the rest of the beach extends towards the sea. High, irregular rocks rise on either side, and above the beach, one can see dry stone walls and vineyard terraces typical of the southern side of Hvar.

Fine Pebbles, Turquoise Waters, and Swimming with Children

Zogon is a small beach with fine gravel and sandy material, making it a more pleasant place to stay than the surrounding rocky bathing spots. The water along the shore is a bright turquoise, transitioning to deeper blue shades as the depth increases.

Entry into the sea from the central part of the beach is relatively straightforward, without the need to navigate large rocks. The depth increases gradually, making Zogon suitable for families with children. However, due to the small size of the cove and its exposure to the southern side of the island, children should be supervised, especially when there are waves.

On both sides of the beach, there are large rocks that continue underwater. The seabed here is rockier and interesting for snorkelling. Due to the excellent clarity of the water, one can observe underwater rocks, fish, and other marine organisms.

During the south winds, larger waves can enter the cove, so it is best to choose a calm day for swimming. The sea then displays its most beautiful turquoise colour, and entering and exiting via the beach is significantly more pleasant.

How to Reach Zogon Beach?

One of the advantages of Zogon is that it can be reached on foot from the central part of Sveta Nedjelja. A pedestrian path with steps leads down to the beach, so there is no need to navigate inaccessible rocks along the coast.

The steps end right by the beach, at the foot of the large rock. Although the access is relatively straightforward for most visitors, it is not suitable for wheelchair users, and those carrying pushchairs or larger beach equipment should be prepared for the steps.

From the higher parts of Sveta Nedjelja, the route to the beach involves descending through the village, with an ascent on the return journey.

Parking and Arriving by Car

To reach Sveta Nedjelja, one must take the road via Ivan Dolac. From the direction of Jelsa, the most common route goes through Pitve and the Pitve-Zavala tunnel, continuing through Zavala and Ivan Dolac towards Sveta Nedjelja.

Zogon does not have a large designated parking area right by the beach. It is best to leave the car in a designated parking spot in the village and then continue on foot to the beach. The access streets are narrow, so during the summer season, parking in places that obstruct residents and other vehicles should be avoided.

Guests staying in apartments in Sveta Nedjelja have the advantage of being able to reach Zogon without using a car.

What Is Nearby the Beach?

Zogon is located not far from the coastal centre of Sveta Nedjelja and the small marina Bilo Idro. In this part of the village, there is also the Bilo Idro restaurant, where one can go for lunch or dinner after swimming.

Sveta Nedjelja is particularly known for its vineyards of Plavac Mali, which rise on steep slopes above the sea. Among the well-known names in local winemaking is Zlatan Otok, whose wines are an important part of the gastronomic offering in this part of Hvar.

Zogon should not be confused with Lučišća Beach, located to the west of Sveta Nedjelja. Lučišća is a secluded natural cove beneath high cliffs, while Zogon is a small village beach accessible on foot from the village.

There are no large hospitality facilities or developed tourist amenities directly on the beach. Due to the limited space, it is most suitable for swimming, sunbathing, and a few hours of relaxation by the sea.

Who Is Zogon Beach Recommended For?

Zogon is a good choice for families with children, couples, and guests seeking a natural beach within walking distance from accommodation in Sveta Nedjelja.

It will particularly appeal to those who enjoy small beaches, very clean waters, and the opportunity to find shade by a natural rock. Unlike the surrounding bathing spots with rocky platforms and stony access, here one can settle on the pebbles and enter the water more easily.

It should be noted that Zogon fills up quickly during the peak season. The large rock occupies a significant portion of the space behind the beach, so there is less room for towels than one might initially expect.

It is precisely this large rock, the small beach, and the turquoise waters that make Zogon one of the most distinctive beaches in Sveta Nedjelja.
