Rosohotnica Cove, Vrboska – a serene natural cove with rocky swimming areas and clear waters

Rosohotnica Cove is located on the northern coast of Hvar Island, approximately three kilometres from Vrboska, in the area known as Mala Basina. It is not a typical beach with a defined beginning and end, but rather a tranquil marine cove characterised by natural rocks, stony shores, and some paved areas for swimming.

Rosohotnica is particularly appealing to visitors looking to spend a day by the sea away from the crowds of the main beaches around Vrboska. The coastline features a small number of houses and apartments, yet the entire area retains a distinctly peaceful, residential character, devoid of large hotel complexes and developed beach infrastructure.

What is the coastline like at Rosohotnica?

Rosohotnica should not be envisioned as a large pebble beach.

The majority of the coastline consists of natural rocks and stony surfaces, with some houses having arranged stone or concrete terraces used for sunbathing and entering the water. In certain areas, there are smaller sections with finer pebbles, but these are not the dominant feature of the coast.

As a result, the cove is made up of a series of smaller swimming spots rather than one large central beach.

This arrangement has its advantages: it is easy to find your own corner by the sea, especially outside the peak season.

Entering the water and the seabed

Access to the water varies depending on which part of the cove you choose.

In some areas, there are natural low approaches over rocks, while in front of certain houses, steps or arranged paths have been created. In other parts, entry is over stones and can be somewhat more challenging.

The seabed is predominantly rocky and stony, with smaller sections of finer sediment and gravel.

Water shoes are therefore advisable, especially if you plan to explore various parts of the coastline.

Very clear waters

One of the main attractions of Rosohotnica is its exceptionally clear water.

Due to the rocky seabed, the water is very transparent, and the transitions between shallower turquoise areas and the darker, deeper sea are clearly visible from the shore.

The rocky edges of the cove are particularly interesting for snorkelling, as there are plenty of rocky passages, crevices, and varying depths underwater.

Shade and pine forest

Rosohotnica is surrounded by dense Mediterranean vegetation and pine trees.

In certain parts of the coastline, natural shade can be found very close to the sea, especially near the rocks and beneath the trees. However, the arranged stone and concrete sunbathing areas are mostly exposed to the sun.

For a full day’s stay, it is advisable to bring your own sun protection, particularly if you cannot find a free spot under the pines.

Rosohotnica and windsurfing

The cove is also known as a suitable spot for windsurfing.

Its location on the northern coast of Hvar means that, with the right wind, good conditions for windsurfing can be created. However, in stronger winds, the sea may be choppier than in completely sheltered coves.

If you are coming solely for a peaceful swim, it is best to choose a day without strong winds.

How to reach Rosohotnica?

From Vrboska, it takes about ten minutes to drive to Rosohotnica.

A local road leads to the cove, and access by car is possible right to the settlement. The final stretch is not a wide tourist road, but a local access route between houses and greenery, so it is necessary to drive slowly and be prepared for a narrower roadway.

Rosohotnica can also be reached by bicycle, and local tourist offerings recommend cycling as one of the options.

The cove is accessible by boat as well.

Parking

Rosohotnica does not have a large organised public car park by the beach.

There are smaller spaces for vehicles in the settlement area, but much of the parking visible near the apartments belongs to private accommodation and is not public parking for bathers.

If you are coming just for swimming, you should park only where permitted and where your vehicle does not obstruct the local road or access to houses.

During the peak summer season, the limited parking can be the biggest drawback of arriving by car.

Are there facilities in the cove?

Rosohotnica is not a completely isolated wild cove, as there is a small settlement with apartments along the coast.

There are catering facilities nearby, but do not expect a large beach bar or extensive tourist zone like those found at more developed beaches.

There are no reliably available public showers and toilets on the public parts of the coast. Showers, sun loungers, and other amenities seen near certain houses belong to private accommodation and should not be considered public beach facilities.

Therefore, for a full day’s stay, it is wise to bring water and everything you may need.

Is Rosohotnica suitable for children?

For families with older children who can swim well, Rosohotnica can be very pleasant.

For small children, it may not be equally practical as there is no large flat pebble beach, and in many places, entry into the water is over stones or rocks.

If your priority is very shallow water, a large flat shore, and complete infrastructure, there are more practical beaches in the vicinity of Vrboska.

Rosohotnica is a better choice for those who value peace, clear water, and a natural environment.

Who is Rosohotnica best suited for?

Rosohotnica will particularly appeal to visitors who enjoy less developed coves and swimming from the rocks.

It is suitable for couples, experienced swimmers, guests who enjoy exploring underwater, and those who wish to spend a day without crowds and noisy tourist infrastructure.

The combination of pine forest, rocky coastline, a few small swimming spots, and very clean waters gives Rosohotnica the feel of a true summer getaway in a small Hvar cove.
