Žučica Beach in Zavala – a tranquil pebble cove under pine trees with crystal-clear waters

Žučica Beach is situated east of Zavala, in a quieter part of the southern coast of Hvar towards Gromin Dolac. From the last houses in Zavala, a dirt road continues along the coast, and the final few minutes to the sea are on foot through the pines.

Žučica is larger than many of the small coves nearby. It features a lovely pebble shore, clean and exceptionally clear waters, and plenty of greenery behind the beach. Its greatest advantage is the combination of natural shade and the complete absence of tourist infrastructure – there are no bars, sun loungers, music, or crowds that accompany more accessible beaches in Zavala itself.

This is a beach where you come with a towel, water, and everything you need for a few hours by the sea.

What is Žučica Beach like?

Žučica is a natural cove with a pebble and rounded stone shoreline, enclosed by rocky edges and pines that almost reach the water.

The central part of the shore is wide enough for a comfortable stay and significantly more spacious than Molve and some other small beaches along the coast of Zavala.

The pebbles are light-coloured, giving the water along the shore a distinct turquoise hue. As you move away from the shore, the shallow, clear water gradually transitions to the deep blue of the open Šćedro Channel.

Entering the water and the seabed

The easiest entry into the water is from the central part of the beach.

The seabed along the shore consists of pebbles and rounded stones, with depth increasing gradually. This makes Žučica pleasant for families with children who are already accustomed to the pebbly Adriatic beaches.

Towards the edges of the cove, larger rocks and stones appear. Here, water shoes are more useful, while most bathers find them unnecessary on the main pebbly area.

One of the cleanest seas along this part of the coast

Žučica is particularly beautiful when the sea is calm.

The water is very clear, and the rocky seabed is easily visible from the surface. Since there is no marina, larger structures, or heavy boat traffic near the beach, the entire cove retains a distinctly natural feel.

In calm conditions, the sea is almost completely still, while stronger southerly winds can bring waves into the cove, similar to other beaches on the southern side of Hvar.

Natural shade under the pines

Unlike many beaches in Zavala, Žučica offers good natural shade.

The dense pine forest comes right up to the back of the beach, providing space for towels even on warmer summer days. As the sun moves throughout the day, the shade gradually extends over a larger part of the back area of the shore.

If you wish to be right by the water, do expect more sun and bring sun protection.

The combination of the pebbly beach and pines is one of Žučica's greatest advantages.

A good beach for families

Žučica is a suitable choice for families looking to avoid organised and busier beaches.

Entry into the water is straightforward, there is shade behind the beach, and there is ample space on the shore for children. There is no traffic or road immediately next to the bathers.

On the other hand, there are no shops, restaurants, showers, or other facilities, so families should bring enough water, food, and everything needed for their stay.

Due to the short walking path from the parking area, the beach is not problematic for families, but it is not accessible for wheelchairs or those with reduced mobility.

Snorkelling

The most interesting part of the seabed is found along the rocky edges of the cove.

In front of the main shore, pebbles and rounded stones dominate, while larger rocks, crevices, and rocky underwater surfaces appear at the edges.

Thanks to the high clarity of the water, Žučica is very pleasant for leisurely exploration of the seabed with a mask and snorkel, without needing to venture far from the shore.

No hospitality or other facilities

Žučica is a completely natural beach.

There are no:

  • restaurants or beach bars
  • showers
  • changing cabins
  • rental of sun loungers and umbrellas
  • organised water sports.

The nearest restaurants, bars, and shops can be found in Zavala.

If you plan to spend most of the day at Žučica, bring enough water and food, as there is no reason to return to the village just for basic supplies.

How to get to Žučica Beach?

From Zavala, head east towards Gromin Dolac.

After leaving the settlement, the asphalt gradually turns into a dirt road that follows the coast and passes through a Mediterranean landscape. The road is not maintained like a main thoroughfare, but it is passable for ordinary cars with slower and careful driving.

At Žučica, cars are left in a widening along the road above the cove.

From there, it is just a few minutes' walk down a path through the pines to the beach.

Parking at Žučica

Žučica does not have a conventional asphalt parking area by the sea.

Cars are left at a widening along the dirt road above the beach, where there is space for approximately ten vehicles when parked neatly.

From the parked car to the beach, expect about 3 to 5 minutes of walking.

In July and August, it is advisable to arrive in the morning. While Žučica is not among the busiest beaches on Hvar, parking space is limited, and later in the day, the nearest spots may be taken.

Is the dirt road worth it?

Yes, especially if you are looking for a quieter beach.

Žučica is not a place you stumble upon while walking along the promenade. You need to leave Zavala and continue along the dirt road, which is why fewer bathers come here compared to the beaches directly below the apartments and restaurants.

This is precisely why the atmosphere is different.

You can hear the sea and the cicadas, there are pines behind the beach, and there is no traffic, music, or large numbers of people passing through.

When is the best time to visit?

During the main season, the best time to arrive is in the morning.

At this time, it is easier to find a parking spot, the sea is usually completely calm, and there is the most choice for placing towels on the beach.

Žučica is pleasant in the afternoon as the pines provide increasing shade.

June and September are particularly lovely for this beach. During these months, the sea is suitable for swimming, and it is quite likely that there will be only a few people in the cove.

Žučica or the beaches in Zavala?

If you want a bar, restaurant, and the option to access the sea directly from your accommodation, the beaches in Zavala are more practical.

Žučica is a better choice when you seek nature, pine shade, and fewer people.

Getting there requires a bit more effort, but it is precisely this dirt access road and the short walk from the road that keep the beach from becoming overcrowded.

For a guest staying in Zavala for a few days, Žučica is certainly one of the beaches worth including in your exploration of the area.
