CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
Krk was probably inhabited during prehistoric times, but its foundations were laid in ancient times, as evidenced by the remains of the city walls from the 1st century BC, Kamplin Square with the remains of temple columns, the Temple of Venus from the 1st century BC, a Roman mosaic from the remains of Roman baths on the ground floor of the Vasilić House, and "Splendissima", which is the name of the inscription on an ancient tombstone from the 4th century. These ancient treasures are not the only attractions of Krk. During a good part of the Middle Ages, Krk was ruled by the famous Frankopan family, who would later be replaced by the Venetians and Austrians. From that period, there are landmarks such as the Tower on the coast, whose construction was commissioned by Nikola Frankopan in 1407, the Town Hall built in the 15th century, Vele place which is actually an old square mentioned in 1263, the Great Town Gate from 1350, the Small Gate built in the 14th century and the indispensable Kaštel which is a Frankopan fortress built from the 12th to the 14th century. The wealth of Krk's landmarks consists of the cathedral and many other churches which were mostly built during the Middle Ages and preserve unique historical and art collections. The discovery of the Krk inscription, an epigraphic monument written in the Glagolitic script from the 11th century, rounds off the story of the unique Krk culture through the centuries. It is also necessary to highlight the nearby islet of Košljun as a forest nature reserve and cultural monument.
