Bjažićovo Beach in Komiža
Bjažićovo Beach is a small pebble beach situated on the northern side of the Komiža bay, nestled between the centre of Komiža and the town beach of Gusarica. It is somewhat hidden among stone houses and two rocky outcrops, making it nearly unnoticeable from the main street and more distant parts of the coast. This location lends it a quieter, more local character, despite being just a few minutes' walk from the waterfront.
Bjažićovo is not an expansive town beach with numerous facilities. It is a small cove frequented for quick swims, clear waters, and its proximity to the old part of Komiža. It is most suitable for guests staying in nearby houses and visitors seeking a more tranquil spot than the nearby Gusarica, without venturing far from the settlement.
Pebble Cove Among Stone Houses
The central part of the beach is covered in pebbles, flanked on both sides by rocks and stone houses built almost to the water's edge. On the eastern side, there is a small concrete jetty where boats can be seen moored. Due to the limited space, there is not much room for towels on the beach, and it can fill up quickly during the summer, even with a small number of bathers.
The easiest entry into the sea is over the pebbly section. The seabed is initially rocky and pebbly, with depth increasing gradually, although the shallows are not as wide as those found at larger family beaches. Water shoes are not essential but can be helpful near the edges of the cove and the concrete jetty, where the ground may be uneven or slippery.
As there are small moorings along the beach, swimmers should be cautious of boats and remain within the safe part of the bay. For longer swims, it is advisable to move away from the area where vessels approach the shore.
Shade and Facilities at the Beach
There is insufficient reliable natural shade on the pebbly section for an entire day's stay. Surrounding houses and rocks may cast some shade at certain times of the day, but it is not advisable to rely on this for protection during the peak summer heat. For a longer visit, it is best to bring your own sun protection.
There are no tourist facilities at the location. Do not expect a beach bar, sunbed rentals, toilets, or organised children's facilities at the beach. Shops, cafés, and restaurants are a few minutes' walk away, towards the centre of Komiža and Gusarica beach.
Thus, Bjažićovo is more suitable for a few hours of swimming rather than a full day with extensive equipment. It is advisable to bring water, towels, and all necessary items with you.
How to Reach Bjažićovo Beach
From the centre of Komiža, walk along Ribarska Street towards the northern side of the bay and Gusarica beach. It takes approximately seven to ten minutes of leisurely walking from the main waterfront, depending on your starting point. Bjažićovo is located before Gusarica, beneath the houses along the coast, with the final approach leading through a short passage to the sea.
The walk from the centre is neither long nor physically demanding, but the old part of Komiža has narrow streets, stone surfaces, and some unevenness. For most visitors, regular sandals are sufficient, although sturdier shoes are more practical for those who find walking on stone challenging.
Access to the beach by car is not possible. The road along this part of the coast is narrow and not suitable for parking directly by the cove. It is best to leave your vehicle at the public car parks at Rogači or Norpina, or at another designated and permitted location, and then continue on foot to the beach. During the summer season, public parking in Komiža is chargeable, so it is advisable to check the current regulations before your visit.
Is Bjažićovo Suitable for Children?
The pebbly entry into the sea may be suitable for children accustomed to swimming, but due to the small size of the beach, proximity to boats, and lack of facilities, it is not among the most practical choices for families with very young children. For more space, easier organisation, and longer stays, the nearby Gusarica is more appropriate.
Older children may find Bjažićovo pleasant for shorter swims, especially when it is not crowded. Regular supervision is necessary due to the jetty, moored boats, and occasionally slippery surfaces near the water.
For individuals with limited mobility, the final approach and crossing over the pebbles may be challenging. The beach is not accessible for wheelchair users, and access with pushchairs depends on the chosen path and the amount of equipment being carried.
Best Time for Swimming
The most pleasant time to visit is in the morning when the small cove usually has more free space and the sun is not yet too strong. Later in the afternoon, part of the beach may receive some shade from surrounding buildings, but this also means more bathers arriving after their daily commitments or returning from other beaches.
Bjažićovo can be visited year-round, but the true swimming season lasts from late spring to early autumn. Outside of summer, the beach is very quiet and suitable for a short stroll along the coast, while during July and August, its true character as a small town cove, primarily used by locals and nearby guests, is most evident.
Bjažićovo Beach may not suit those seeking a wide shoreline, all-day shade, and numerous facilities. Its advantage lies in being small, tucked away among stone houses, and close enough to the centre to reach without a car and without special planning.
