Komiška Regatta – Sailing Regatta Split – Komiža – Split

The Komiška Regatta is one of the more well-known sailing regattas in the Adriatic, attracting a large number of yachts and their crews to Komiža each year at the end of May. Organised by the Labud Sailing Club from Split, the regatta follows the route Split – Komiža – Split, making Komiža the central gathering point for sailors during the regatta weekend.

In contrast to the Palagruža Route, which is linked to the historical Komiža falkušas and the old fishing route to Palagruža, the Komiška Regatta is a modern sports regatta for cruisers. Therefore, it is worth observing these two events separately; both are connected to the sea and Komiža but represent entirely different aspects of its maritime narrative.

Route Split – Komiža – Split

The Komiška Regatta typically lasts for three days. The first leg sails on Friday from Split to Komiža, where crews enter Komiža Bay after several hours at sea, concluding the first part of the competition.

The distance from Split to Komiža is approximately 32 nautical miles, passing through the channels of Split, Šolta, Hvar, Vis, and Biševo, and finishing in Komiža Bay. The actual sailing tactics and choice of the fastest route depend on the wind and sea conditions.

Saturday has traditionally been a day for rest and socialising for the crews in Komiža, which adds a unique character to the event. The yachts remain in the harbour, allowing crews to spend the day in the town before the return leg.

On Sunday, the second leg is sailed from Komiža back to Split, followed by the conclusion of the regatta and the announcement of the most successful crews.

When is the Komiška Regatta held?

The Komiška Regatta does not have the same calendar date every year, but the timing is considerably more predictable than some other Komiža events.

In recent years, it has taken place at the end of May, most often during the last weekend of the month, although depending on the calendar, the final day may also fall at the beginning of June.

For example:

    1. – 27–29 May
    1. – 26–28 May
    1. – 31 May–2 June
    1. – 30 May–1 June
    1. – 29–31 May

Therefore, for planning a visit, it is best to consider the end of May, but it is advisable to check the officially published dates for the specific year before booking accommodation.

Komiška Regatta 2026

The jubilee 35th Komiška Regatta was held from 29 to 31 May 2026.

The first leg started on Friday from Split to Komiža, while the return leg from Komiža to Split was scheduled for Sunday. A notable new feature of the 35th edition was the planned promotional regatta in Komiža Bay on Saturday, bringing the sailing experience closer to the audience watching from the shore.

This sailing within the bay is particularly interesting for visitors, as the yachts can be observed from a much closer distance than during the main route between Split and Komiža.

Where is the best place to watch the regatta in Komiža?

For visitors, the most exciting moment is the arrival of the fleet in Komiža Bay and the entry of the yachts into the harbour after the first leg. A good view can be had from the waterfront and various parts of the coastline around the bay, while the harbour itself is filled with yachts during the regatta weekend.

In 2025, the first leg featured as many as 57 yachts, demonstrating how much the appearance of Komiža harbour changes during this weekend. The first leg that year was approximately 32 nautical miles long, with 51 yachts successfully reaching the finish in Komiža.

Thus, the regatta is not only of interest to active sailors. If staying in Komiža at the end of May, it is worth checking whether the regatta is taking place that weekend, as the large number of yachts, crews, and events in the harbour creates a completely different atmosphere compared to a typical pre-season weekend.

Where to find dates and current information?

The main and most reliable source is the official website of the Komiška Regatta by the Labud Sailing Club, where the date, regatta announcement, entries, starting lists, programme, results, and other important information are published:

As the exact dates are determined for each edition, it is always best to check the JK Labud website before arrival.

The Komiška Regatta has been connecting sailing in Split with Komiža for decades, and the weekend spent between the two competitive legs is one of the reasons why the town has become an integral part of the regatta's identity. For visitors to Komiža, it is an opportunity to see the town's bay filled with yachts and experience the place during a period when the tourist season is just beginning to pick up.
