Pizdica Beach near Komiža

Pizdica is one of those beaches in Komiža that you don't stumble upon by chance. Nestled beneath the steep southern coast of the Komiža bay, it is far enough from the town to escape the summer crowds, yet close enough for a boat trip or a more serious morning walk. There are no piers, houses, or bars by the sea – just a pebble beach, greenery behind it, and clear water that is noticeably cooler in places due to underwater springs.

The easiest way to reach it is by boat from Komiža. There is a walking route, but it is not suitable for everyone: the path is long, the final descent is steep, and after swimming, you face an uphill return. For this reason, Pizdica is best suited to those seeking peace and who are willing to organise their visit a bit more thoroughly.

What the Beach is Like

Pizdica is a natural pebble beach located beneath a high, green slope. The central part of the beach is the most pleasant for entering the water and laying down towels, while the edges are rockier and more interesting for snorkelling. The pebbles are not uniformly fine and smooth like those on well-maintained urban beaches, so a thicker mat is a good addition for a longer stay.

Entering the water from the middle of the beach is quite straightforward. The seabed along the shore is pebbly and rocky, with depth increasing gradually. Water shoes are not essential, but they can be useful due to larger stones and rocky sections at the edges.

The water is usually very clear, and a unique feature of Pizdica is the freshwater springs. While swimming, you may feel cooler layers, especially closer to the shore and at spots where the water emerges from underground. In the hottest part of summer, this is a pleasant refreshment, although some may find the water feels cooler than at other beaches around Komiža.

Shade by the Beach

One of the advantages of Pizdica is the greenery just behind the beach. Under the trees and along the edge of the slope, you can find natural shade, particularly in the early part of the day. However, shaded spots are limited and quickly taken when a few boats arrive at the beach.

The majority of the pebble beach remains exposed to the sun, so for a full day’s stay, it is advisable to bring a hat or sunshade. There is nowhere to seek shelter indoors at Pizdica, and returning to the town is not quick, making sun protection more important than at urban beaches.

Arriving by Boat from Komiža

It takes just a few minutes to reach Pizdica by boat from the Komiža harbour, and this is by far the most pleasant way to arrive. Local taxi boats often include Pizdica among the secluded beaches in the Komiža bay, but departures and returns should be arranged in advance.

There is no harbour, jetty, or designated mooring at the beach. Smaller boats approach the pebble shore, and disembarking depends on sea conditions and the type of vessel. In calm weather, this is not a significant issue, but with stronger waves, disembarking can be tricky, especially for older individuals and small children.

It is best to arrange the return time before disembarking. It is unwise to assume that boats will continuously pass by the beach or that transport will be easily found just before evening.

Walking Access

Pizdica can also be reached on foot from Komiža, but this is not a typical stroll to the beach. From the centre, you should allow approximately an hour’s walk one way, depending on your pace, the heat, and the condition of the path.

Most of the route leads to the area above the southern coast, with the final part descending steeply towards the sea. The path is rocky, occasionally narrow, and may be overgrown, especially outside the main season. The most challenging aspect is not just the descent but the uphill return after spending several hours in the sun and sea.

Closed sports or hiking shoes are required for the walk. Flip-flops are not a good choice, especially on sections with loose stones. In summer, it is best to set off early in the morning, bring enough water, and return before dark as the path is not lit.

Walking to the beach is sensible for those in good shape who enjoy quieter trails and do not carry much equipment. For most bathers, the boat is a more practical and comfortable option.

Arriving by Car and Parking

You cannot drive directly to the beach. You can get close to the area above Pizdica by car, but the final descent must always be made on foot.

There is no designated parking at the start of the path. Any potential roadside and field path parking is very limited and must not obstruct access or land. Those unfamiliar with the area may find it easier to leave their car in a public car park in Komiža and arrange to arrive by boat.

Springs and Old Water Supply Traces

Behind the beach, you can notice traces of a former system connected to the water supply in Komiža. These are part of the area's uniqueness but are not a developed tourist attraction. Abandoned and closed sections should not be entered as they may be slippery, unstable, and dangerous.

Although there are freshwater springs at Pizdica, you should not rely on them for drinking water. You should bring your own water for the entire stay, especially if walking and planning to stay for several hours.

Facilities at the Beach

There are no tourist facilities at the location. There is no beach bar, restaurant, shop, toilet, shower, or rental of sun loungers and umbrellas.

Everything you need should be brought from Komiža: water, food, sun protection, and enough equipment for the return. There is no organised waste disposal at the beach, so everything brought must be taken back with you.

Pizdica is not a place where you can pop out for a cold drink or lunch. For this reason, visitors who seek a few hours of true peace, without music, traffic, or the urban beach atmosphere, tend to linger here.

Is Pizdica Suitable for Children?

The beach itself can be pleasant for families as it has a pebbly entry into the water and some natural shade. However, arriving with children is significantly easier by boat. The walking path, steep descent, and subsequent ascent are not practical for small children or for carrying a lot of equipment.

Older children who are used to walking can come on foot with adults, but only with good footwear and by setting off during the cooler part of the day. Pushchairs are not usable here.

The beach is not adapted for wheelchair users. Those with reduced mobility may also find disembarking from a smaller boat onto the natural shore problematic.

The Best Time to Visit

For a walking visit, it is best to set off early in the morning while the path is still cool. This way, you arrive at the beach before the strongest sun, making it easier to find a shaded spot and leaving enough time for the return.

If arriving by boat, you can spend almost the entire day at Pizdica, but it is important to monitor the wind and sea conditions. When waves rise in the bay, getting ashore and later boarding can become uncomfortable.

Pizdica is the right choice for those who wish to escape from urban beaches and do not mind the lack of comfort or facilities. It is most memorable for its tranquillity, cooler clear waters, and the feeling of seclusion, even though Komiža is only a few minutes away by boat.
