Rota Palagruzona – Historic Falkuša Regatta from Komiža

Rota Palagruzona is one of the most recognisable events in Komiža, showcasing the deep connection between the town's history and its fishing heritage. At the heart of the event are the traditional Komiža gajete falkuše and the ancient sailing route between Komiža and Palagruža, which generations of local fishermen have traversed for centuries.

Today, Rota Palagruzona is celebrated as a Festival of the Sea, featuring traditional boats, sailing, regattas, and cultural programmes linked to Komiža's maritime heritage. The programme varies from year to year, so it is advisable for visitors to check the current schedule before arriving in Komiža.

A Regatta with Centuries of Tradition

The organised fishing regatta from Komiža to Palagruža was first documented on 12 June 1593, when 74 falkuše set sail for Palagruža. According to the Gajeta Falkuša project, the tradition of such regattas continued until 1936. As a result, Rota Palagruzona is considered one of the oldest historically recorded regattas in the Mediterranean and Europe.

For the old fishermen of Komiža, this was not a sporting competition as we might envision today. Palagruža was one of the most important fishing grounds in the open Adriatic, and crews would navigate long and challenging sea routes to catch sardines and prepare their haul. The speed of arrival was practically significant, as the first crews could secure better spots for landing their boats and organising their stay on the island.

Gajeta Falkuša – A Symbol of Komiža

No story of Rota Palagruzona would be complete without the falkuša. This traditional wooden fishing boat was specifically developed for the needs of Komiža fishermen and their journeys to distant fishing areas.

The falkuša had to be capable of sailing in open waters, carrying crew, nets, salt, and a substantial catch, while also being able to be drawn ashore. Today, it has become one of the most recognisable symbols of Komiža's maritime heritage.

The modern Rota Palagruzona was revived in 2009 at the initiative of the Ars Halieutica association, aiming to preserve the falkuša, traditional seafaring, and the memory of the lifestyle of the old fishermen of Komiža.

When is Rota Palagruzona Held?

Rota Palagruzona does not have a fixed date. The timing is determined for each edition individually, and in recent years, the event has taken place in both June and September.

For example, in 2023, the Festival of the Sea Rota Palagruzona was held from 22 to 25 June, while the 2025 edition is scheduled for 11 to 14 September. Therefore, it is essential to check the officially announced date for the specific year before planning a visit.

A significant change has been introduced from 2026. Organisers have announced that the more demanding regatta sailing to Palagruža will now be held biennially, or every other year. This means that while Rota Palagruzona remains the name and framework of the event, the programme does not necessarily include sailing to Palagruža every year.

This was already evident in 2025, when instead of sailing to Palagruža, the Rota Cicibela to Biševo took place. Therefore, future editions' programmes should be checked separately, as the route and accompanying events may change.

Rota Palagruzona 2026

The Rota Palagruzona 2026 will take place in Komiža from 9 to 13 September 2026, and this year's edition will once again include sailing to Palagruža.

For visitors who are not part of the crew, the programme in Komiža itself is particularly interesting. Traditional boats and falkuše can be seen in the harbour and along the promenade, where crews prepare for sailing, and various events related to the sea, fishing, and Komiža's cultural heritage are organised alongside the regatta.

The exact schedule of events, departure times, and other details will be announced prior to each edition, and the programme may also depend on weather conditions at sea.

Where to Follow the Date and Programme of Rota Palagruzona?

The best way to stay updated is to follow the official events calendar of the Tourist Board of the Town of Komiža, where the current date, programme, and any changes are published:

Rota Palagruzona is particularly interesting because it is not just another summer regatta. When the falkuše gather in the harbour of Komiža and set off towards the open sea, it revives the route that local fishermen have sailed for centuries before the advent of modern boats and navigation. Due to this connection with the falkuša, Palagruža, and fishing history, Rota is one of the events that most authentically represents Komiža.
