Rota Palagruzona – Historical Regatta of Falkuša from Komiža

Rota Palagruzona is one of the most recognizable events in Komiža and best illustrates how the history of this place is connected to fishing and the open sea. At the center of Rota are the traditional Komiža gajete falkuše and the old sailing route between Komiža and Palagruža, which generations of Komiža fishermen have used for centuries.

Today, Rota Palagruzona is held as a Festival of the Sea, featuring traditional boats, sailing, regattas, and cultural programs related to Komiža's maritime heritage. The program changes from year to year, so visitors should check the current schedule before arriving in Komiža.

Regatta with Centuries of Tradition

The organized fishing regatta from Komiža to Palagruža was documented as early as June 12, 1593, when 74 Komiža falkuše set sail for Palagruža. According to the Gajeta Falkuša project, the tradition of such regattas continued until 1936. Therefore, Rota Palagruzona is considered one of the oldest historically recorded regattas in the Mediterranean and Europe.

For the old Komiža fishermen, it was not a sporting competition as we imagine regattas today. Palagruža was one of the most important fishing areas in the open Adriatic, and crews in falkuše traveled a long and demanding sea route to catch sardines and prepare their catch. The speed of arrival also had practical value, as the first crews could secure better spots for unloading their boats and organizing their stay on the island.

Gajeta Falkuša – Symbol of Komiža

Without the falkuša, there is no true story of Rota Palagruzona. This traditional wooden fishing boat was developed specifically for the needs of Komiža fishermen and their voyages to distant fishing areas.

The falkuša had to be capable of sailing in open waters, carrying the crew, nets, salt, and a large catch, while also being able to be pulled ashore. Today, it has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Komiža's maritime heritage.

The modern Rota Palagruzona was reinitiated in 2009 at the initiative of the Ars Halieutica association, aimed at preserving the falkuša, traditional seamanship, and the memory of the lifestyle of old Komiža fishermen.

When is Rota Palagruzona Held?

Rota Palagruzona does not have a fixed date of occurrence. The date is determined for each edition separately, and in recent years, the event has been held in both June and September.

For example, in 2023, the Festival of the Sea Rota Palagruzona took place from June 22 to June 25, while the 2025 edition is scheduled for September 11 to September 14. Therefore, it is essential to check the officially published date for the specific year before planning a trip.

An important change will be introduced starting in 2026. The organizers have announced that the more demanding regatta sailing to Palagruža will henceforth be held biennially, every other year. This means that Rota Palagruzona will remain the name and framework of the event, but the program does not have to include sailing to Palagruža every year.

This was already evident in 2025, when instead of sailing to Palagruža, the Rota Cicibela to Biševo was held. Therefore, the program of future editions should be checked separately, as the route and accompanying events may change.

Rota Palagruzona 2026

Rota Palagruzona 2026 will take place in Komiža from September 9 to September 13, 2026, and this year's edition will again include sailing to Palagruža.

For visitors who are not part of the crew, the program in Komiža itself is particularly interesting. Traditional boats and falkuše can be seen in the harbor and along the waterfront, where crews prepare for sailing, and alongside the regatta, other events related to the sea, fishing, and Komiža's cultural heritage are organized.

The exact schedule of events, departure times, and other details will be published prior to each edition, and the program may also depend on weather conditions at sea.

Where to Follow the Date and Program of Rota Palagruzona?

The safest way to follow the official event calendar of the Tourist Board of the City of Komiža, where the current date, program, and any changes are published:

Rota Palagruzona is particularly interesting because it is not just another summer regatta. When the falkuše gather in the Komiža harbor and set sail for the open sea, the route that Komiža fishermen traveled centuries before the development of modern boats and navigation is revived. Due to this connection with the falkuša, Palagruža, and fishing history, Rota is one of the events that most authentically represent Komiža.
