Rogačić Vis – beaches, Parja, military tunnel and guide through the bay

Rogačić is a small coastal settlement and one of the deepest bays on the northern side of the island of Vis, located just west of the town of Vis. It is only a short drive from the town's waterfront, but as the road descends towards the sea, the atmosphere changes rapidly. Instead of restaurants, shops, and a ferry port, here you will find small houses along the shore, boats at anchor, pebbly bathing spots, pine trees, and a tranquil bay that extends deep inland.

Rogačić is actually part of a larger natural harbour consisting of two arms – Rogačić and Parja. Rogačić is somewhat more open and populated, while Parja is narrower, longer, and even more deeply hidden among the hills. This positioning has historically attracted both sailors and military personnel, and today these two bays welcome bathers, sailors, and visitors keen to see one of the most interesting military tunnels on Vis.

The greatest advantage of Rogačić is simple: it is very close to the town of Vis, yet sufficiently quiet to serve as a completely different base for a holiday.

Where is Rogačić located?

Rogačić is situated on the northern coast of Vis, west of the large Vis harbour. It is the closest small tourist settlement to the town of Vis, making it accessible by car or scooter in just a few minutes.

From Vis, the road first follows the coast towards Stonca, then climbs to a small pass before descending towards Rogačić and Parja.

The distance is short enough that Rogačić can also serve as a quieter alternative to accommodation in the town. It is easy to quickly head to Vis for groceries, dinner, or the ferry, and upon returning, there is no urban congestion or constant traffic along the coast.

Rogačić and Parja can also be reached on foot from Vis. The marked route from Vis to Rogačić to Parja takes approximately one hour to reach the endpoint at Parja, with about 60 metres of ascent and descent. Rogačić is located just before the end of the route, so it is reached slightly earlier.

Rogačić and Parja – two bays forming one natural harbour

When discussing Rogačić, it is important to understand its relationship with Parja.

These are not two completely separate locations but two arms of the same deeply indented bay.

Rogačić is the eastern, slightly wider arm. Along its coast, there are more houses, several small pebbly bathing spots, and local moorings.

Parja extends further west. It is narrower, longer, and appears even more secluded. Along its shore, there is a large military naval tunnel, which gives this part of the bay a very different historical narrative compared to a typical tourist settlement.

Parja is also a somewhat safer nautical area, while Rogačić is more exposed to the bora wind. The official Vis pilot states that the depth in the middle of Parja reaches around 4 to 10 metres, with a seabed consisting of mud and patches of seagrass.

Rogačić Beach – a small shore by the houses and boats

The main Rogačić Beach is located next to the populated part of the bay.

This is not a large tourist bathing area. The beach is small, predominantly pebbly, with rocky sections along the edges. The water is calm and very clear, and the presence of small boats and houses along the shore gives the whole place more of a traditional island hamlet feel than that of a developed tourist zone.

One of the interesting features of the sea in Rogačić is the underwater freshwater springs. In certain spots while swimming, you may feel a sudden change in temperature and a cooler layer of water.

The beach does not have a large beach bar, rows of sun loungers, or facilities typical of popular island bathing spots. This makes it appealing to guests who simply wish to enter the water a few minutes after leaving their apartment.

Komarča – for those who prefer rocky shores

In the Rogačić area, there is also Komarča Beach, which is completely different from the main pebbly bathing area.

Komarča is more natural, rockier, and less developed. Instead of a classic shore, there are predominately rocks, larger stones, and small spots from which one can enter the water.

This beach is best suited for good swimmers and those who do not mind not having a perfectly flat spot for their towel.

The water along the rocky shore is particularly good for snorkelling, and the absence of hospitality facilities and its somewhat hidden location mean that it usually has fewer people than more accessible beaches.

Komarča is not among the better choices for small children, but for a few hours of peaceful swimming near Vis, it can be excellent.

Mala Svitnja – a small shore under the pines

Continuing along the coast towards the town of Vis are Mala and Vela Svitnja.

Mala Svitnja is hidden at the end of a small bay and has a completely different character from Vela Svitnja. Here, there is a small pebbly shore, a few houses, and a small jetty, with the significant advantage of a pine forest that descends almost to the sea.

For this reason, Mala Svitnja is one of the better choices in this part of the coast if seeking natural shade.

Access to the beach is not by car. Vehicles remain above the bay, and the last part is covered on foot. The path is not long, but the return to the road is uphill.

Mala Svitnja is well-suited for guests who want peaceful swimming in nature and do not mind a few minutes' walk to the sea.

Vela Svitnja – rocky naturist beach

Vela Svitnja is quite a different story.

It is located closer to the town of Vis, beneath the area of Fort George, and is traditionally known as a naturist or nudist beach.

There is no pebbly shore here. Sunbathing occurs on large stone slabs and rocks, there is almost no natural shade, and entry into the water is directly from the rocky shore.

Vela Svitnja is therefore more suited to adults, good swimmers, and naturists than to families with small children.

Its underwater scenery is particularly interesting. An ancient shipwreck with a large number of amphorae from the 1st century BC has been found in this bay, making Vela Svitnja not just a bathing spot but also one of the important underwater archaeological sites related to ancient Issa.

Military naval tunnel Parja – the main attraction of Rogačić

The most intriguing individual attraction in the entire area is located in Parja bay.

Carved into the rock is a large military naval tunnel, also known as the Parja Tunnel. The large opening faces directly towards the sea, allowing military vessels to enter the interior of the hill and remain concealed from outside view.

The tunnel is often referred to online as a “submarine tunnel,” but it is more accurately described as an underground shelter for military vessels. The official Tourist Board of Vis specifically states that it served as a shelter for a torpedo boat.

Today, the tunnel is abandoned and is one of the stops on organised military tours of Vis. Such tours include passing through the marine tunnel in Parja.

Even without a tour, it is enough to stand before its large dark opening and look at the concrete dock by the sea to understand how different the military role of Vis once was compared to its current tourist character.

If staying in Rogačić, this is a place that is certainly worth seeing.

Why was Rogačić important to the military?

The position of the bay almost explains the answer.

Parja is narrow, long, and deeply hidden, and the entire bay is enclosed by surrounding land. A ship entering deep into Parja would be much less visible from the open sea than in a large harbour.

During the second half of the 20th century, Vis was one of the most important military areas in the Adriatic, leading to the construction of bunkers, artillery positions, barracks, underground storage facilities, and tunnels across the island.

Today, Rogačić and Parja may be the best examples of how military infrastructure was able to blend into the natural landscape. From a distance, a peaceful green bay is visible; only as one approaches does the large opening hollowed deep into the rock reveal itself.

Rogačić is also interesting for those visiting Vis by sailing or motorboat.

The official pilot describes the entire harbour as deeply indented and well-protected, with Parja being the safer and more enclosed arm, while Rogačić is somewhat more exposed to the bora wind.

Parja is particularly interesting for anchoring. Depths in the central part range from approximately 4 to 10 metres, with a muddy bottom and patches of seagrass.

Rogačić also allows for anchoring, but it is always important to consider the forecast and actual conditions before overnighting. A calm summer day may give the impression of a completely enclosed bay, but the bora in the eastern arm can change the situation.

The advantage of anchoring here is the proximity to the town of Vis. Instead of staying at the town's waterfront, one can remain in a quieter bay and reach the town relatively quickly.

Rogačić is therefore well-suited for sailors who wish to combine a peaceful night outside the town harbour with easy access to Vis.

Škojić further closes the entrance to the bay

At the entrance to the Rogačić area lies Škojić, which was once a rock but is now connected to the mainland and resembles a small peninsula.

This further protects the bay from northern winds.

The name and position of Škojić can easily be overlooked if arriving in Rogačić solely by road, but from the sea, it is much clearer how its position helps to close off the entire natural harbour.

It is precisely the combination of Škojić, the deep arms of Rogačić and Parja, and the surrounding hills that creates the characteristic appearance of the entire bay.

Fort George above Svitnja

Above the coast between the town of Vis and Rogačić stands one of the most important British fortifications on Vis – Fort George, or Fortica.

The fortress does not belong to Rogačić itself and is better considered part of the town of Vis, but it is geographically close enough that it is natural to include it in a tour of this part of the island.

Official Vis sources above Vela and Mala Svitnja mention Fort George and the remains of Bentich's tower, which locals refer to by the toponym Terjun.

In such a small area, several completely different historical periods can be connected – an ancient shipwreck in Vela Svitnja, a 19th-century British fortress, and a much younger Yugoslav military tunnel in Parja.

Accommodation in Rogačić – for those who want to be close to Vis but not in the town

Rogačić is a very small settlement and does not have a large hotel offering.

Accommodation mainly consists of apartments and holiday homes by the sea or on the hills above the bay.

Its greatest advantage is not a wide range of amenities but its location.

Guests can descend to a small bathing area almost in front of their house in the morning, head to Vis for coffee or shopping in the afternoon, and return to the peaceful bay in the evening without the hustle and bustle of the town.

When choosing accommodation, it is advisable to check the exact position of the house and parking. Rogačić is spread out, the roads to certain parts of the bay are narrow, and accommodation marked with the same name may be right by the sea or somewhat higher up the slope.

If one wishes to walk to the town of Vis daily, it is wise to check the distance before booking. Rogačić is very practical for a car or scooter.

Are there restaurants and shops in Rogačić?

Rogačić does not have tourist infrastructure comparable to that of the town of Vis.

One should not expect a series of restaurants, a shop, a bakery, and evening cafés within a few minutes' walk. The town of Vis is the main support for shopping, restaurants, fuel, and other services.

This is not a significant drawback as the distance is small, but it is good to know before booking accommodation.

If one desires a holiday where the car is not used for the entire week, the town of Vis is more practical.

If a peaceful house by the sea is sought and a few minutes' drive to everything necessary is not an issue, Rogačić makes much more sense.

Parking and driving in Rogačić

Rogačić is accessible by car, but one should not expect wide urban roads or large public parking areas within the settlement.

The local approaches to the sea and houses are sometimes narrow and typically island-like, and there is very little space for parking along certain parts of the coast.

If an apartment is booked, having private parking is one of the more important details to check.

To access Rogačić Beach, parking is available in the settlement area, while at Mala and Vela Svitnja, cars are left above the bay and the last part is covered on foot.

The proximity of the town makes Rogačić particularly appealing for morning or evening walks.

The marked route from Vis follows the coast towards Stonca, then goes along a gravel path towards the pass and continues through Rogačić to Parja. The entire stretch to Parja takes approximately one hour.

The path does not have a significant elevation difference and is not a demanding hiking route.

In mid-July and August, the main issue is the sun, so early morning or sunset time is much more pleasant.

It is particularly interesting to walk the entire way to the military tunnel and then return towards Vis. This way, one can connect the town, the peaceful bay, and a part of the island's military history without a car.

Who is Rogačić a good choice for?

Rogačić is best suited for guests who value peace and proximity to the town of Vis at the same time.

It is good for couples who want accommodation by the sea but can drive to the town in the evening.

It also suits guests who prefer small natural bathing spots over large well-known beaches.

Sailors find it interesting due to the deeply indented bay and Parja, while history enthusiasts appreciate the military tunnel, Fort George, and the entire military landscape northwest of Vis.

For families with very small children, there are more practical locations like Milna or Stončica, especially if sand, large shallows, and facilities right by the beach are priorities.

Rogačić is also not the right choice for guests whose main interests are nightlife, restaurants, and evening promenades right outside their apartment.

When is the best time to visit Rogačić?

In July and August, the settlement and bay have more guests and boats, but Rogačić does not take on the atmosphere of a large tourist destination even then.

June and September are particularly well-suited. The water is still pleasant for swimming, the walking route to Vis and Parja is easier without the peak heat, and there are very few people on the small beaches.

Spring and early autumn may be the best times for visiting the military tunnel, Fort George, and hiking in the surrounding bays.

If arriving by boat, the weather forecast is more important than the month. Parja is very sheltered, but no anchorage should be assessed solely based on how it appears during calm summer weather.

Why choose Rogačić?

Rogačić does not have one major attraction that completely defines the place.

Its value lies precisely in the combination of several different things in a very small space.

There is a small settlement by the sea, Rogačić Beach for easy morning swimming, rocky Komarča, Mala Svitnja under the pines, and naturist Vela Svitnja. Just around the next bend begins Parja with its large military tunnel, and above the coast stands the British Fort George.

All of this is practically at the doorstep of the town of Vis.

For this reason, Rogačić is more interesting than it may initially appear. It is not a classic tourist destination with a long promenade and ten restaurants, but precisely because of that, it can serve as an excellent peaceful base just minutes from the island's capital.

Here, one can still wake up to boats in a small bay, swim without large crowds, then be at the Vis waterfront in a few minutes, and in the afternoon take a walk to the military tunnel hidden in the rock.

For a guest who wishes to combine the sea, peace, nature, and proximity to the town of Vis, Rogačić is one of the more interesting small corners of the northern coast of the island.
