Mala Srebrna Rukavac Vis – a tranquil beach next to Srebrna
Mala Srebrna is located near Rukavac on the southern side of the island of Vis, right next to the much more famous Srebrna beach. Locally, it may also be referred to as Molo Srebarna. Although the two beaches are only a few minutes' walk apart, Mala Srebrna has a different character – it is smaller, more sheltered among rocks and pines, and generally feels quieter than the larger Srebrna.
The beach is situated in a small natural indentation along the coast. The main area consists of light pebbles and stones, while flatter rocks on the sides provide spots for sunbathing and entering the water. The sea is very clear, and the rocky seabed along the edges of the cove is interesting for snorkelling.
Mala Srebrna does not have the width and openness of the main Srebrna. Its smaller space is a significant advantage when there are not many people, but during the summer season, it means that good spots can be quickly taken.
How to reach Mala Srebrna?
Mala Srebrna can be accessed through Rukavac, the same area that leads to the larger Srebrna. The beach is approximately 250–280 metres from the main Srebrna beach, and the nearest houses in Rukavac are only about 200 metres away.
It is possible to drive to the Rukavac area via an unpaved road, but one should not expect an asphalted car park right by the shore. The last part is most conveniently traversed on foot along a short path through natural terrain.
If you are already at Srebrna, you can continue on foot to Mala Srebrna. Given the proximity, it makes sense to visit both beaches in the same day.
The path is not long, but the sections around the coast and rocks are not a well-maintained urban promenade, so normal sandals or footwear are a safer choice than completely smooth flip-flops.
What is the beach like?
Mala Srebrna is a natural pebble and rocky beach. Unlike the larger Srebrna, known for its distinctly large rounded pebbles, the entire area here is smaller and more enclosed.
On the sides, there are stone slabs and rocks suitable for sunbathing. Those who do not enjoy lying on pebbles will often find more comfortable spots in these areas.
Entering the water from the pebbly section is relatively easy, while the rocks on the sides are more suitable for confident swimmers. Water shoes may be useful due to the stones and uneven ground.
The sea along the shore quickly transitions from bright turquoise to deeper blue, and there is enough rocky seabed near the rocks that a snorkel is more beneficial than on a completely sandy beach.
Is there natural shade?
One of the advantages of Mala Srebrna is the vegetation and pines directly behind and above part of the beach. Due to its more sheltered position and surrounding greenery, it is possible to find natural shade, especially during certain parts of the day. Local descriptions highlight Mala Srebrna as a more intimate part of the Srebrna area, while visitors mention shade from the pines and surrounding rocks.
However, one should not expect the entire shore to be shaded. In July and August, especially around midday, sun protection is still advisable.
Are there facilities at Mala Srebrna?
There are no beach bars, restaurants, sun loungers, showers, or other facilities at Mala Srebrna. Its advantage lies in its more natural and tranquil character.
Hospitality and other tourist offerings can be found in the wider area of Srebrna and Rukavac, so it is not necessary to go far if you wish to have lunch or a drink. The offerings near the beaches may vary between seasons.
For a few hours of stay, it is advisable to bring your own water, especially during the hottest part of the day.
Mala Srebrna or Srebrna?
Although they are practically neighbours, the two beaches cater to different types of visitors.
Srebrna is large, open, and one of the most well-known beaches on Vis. Behind it lies a vast pine forest, it has more space, and is more suitable for families wishing to spend the whole day in one place.
Mala Srebrna is smaller and more secluded. There is not much space on the shore, but the atmosphere is more intimate and usually quieter. It is particularly good if you want to swim in clear waters and lie on the rocks without the feeling of being on a large tourist beach.
The best option is actually to combine the two – visit the Srebrna area and take a walk to Mala Srebrna during the day, then choose whichever beach has fewer people and more pleasant shade at that moment.
Mala Srebrna and Ruda
If you continue along the coast to the west, the next interesting cove is Ruda, which is also much quieter than the main Srebrna. Mala Srebrna is located approximately between the areas of Srebrna and Ruda, making this entire stretch of coast appealing for those who enjoy exploring smaller beaches rather than staying at one bathing spot all day. Maps place the location of Mala Srebrna about 640 metres from Ruda.
Mala Srebrna is particularly a good choice for guests staying in Rukavac. It is close enough to the settlement that it does not require a serious outing, while at the same time offering a much more natural and tranquil feel than the main beaches.
If Srebrna is a destination for its wide shore, large pebbles, and pine forest, Mala Srebrna is its quieter and more hidden version – a small cove for swimming, snorkelling, and a few hours by the sea without many additional facilities.
