Rukavac, Vis – Srebrna, Tepluš, Ravnik and a Guide to the Area

Rukavac is a tranquil coastal village located on the southeast side of the island of Vis, best known for Srebrna beach, but it offers much more than just a single popular bathing spot. It has expanded from old fishing houses by the sea towards Donji and Gornji Rukavac in the hinterland, while along the coast, small harbours, pebble beaches, stone slabs and very clear waters alternate. It is approximately 10 kilometres by road from the town of Vis, close enough for a quick drive to the port and town, yet sufficiently secluded to avoid the hustle and bustle in the evenings.

Today, Rukavac is the largest coastal settlement on the island of Vis and one of the main destinations for summer holidays outside of Vis and Komiža. According to the 2021 Census, it has 105 residents, but the scene changes dramatically in summer as a large part of the village consists of holiday homes and apartments.

The greatest advantage of Rukavac is simple: the sea and good beaches are always nearby. Srebrna is one of the most famous beaches on the entire island, Tepluš is more practical for families and dining by the sea, Mala Srebrna offers a quieter alternative, while to the west begins a much wilder stretch of coastline around Ruda. In front of the bay lies Ravnik with the Green Cave, allowing for a combination of swimming, boating and coastal exploration without a long journey.

Old and New Rukavac – Two Different Faces of the Same Bay

Rukavac is not a classic Dalmatian village with a single promenade around which everything is concentrated. The settlement consists of several parts, which often confuses first-time visitors.

Old Rukavac is located in the eastern arm of the bay and still best preserves the appearance of a former fishing hamlet. Along the coast are old houses and boats at moorings, and the atmosphere is significantly quieter than in the parts of the village that developed later through apartment tourism. If one wishes to see how Rukavac looked before the development of numerous holiday homes, this part is worth exploring on foot.

In New Rukavac, there is a harbour with a concrete pier and an area where fishing boats still dock. Here, it feels more like Rukavac has not evolved as a tourist settlement, but rather as a place connected to fishing and the sea. The pier is relatively small, and the entire bay has retained its local character despite the large number of apartments in the vicinity.

Above the coast, Donji and Gornji Rukavac continue, with houses and apartments scattered across gentle slopes. Due to this elongated structure, it is worth checking the exact location when booking accommodation: "Rukavac" can mean being just a few steps from the sea, but also further inland above the bay.

Srebrna Beach – The Most Famous Beach in Rukavac

If there is one place that has made Rukavac known to tourists, it is Srebrna.

The beach is located at the southern edge of the settlement and is characterised by large light pebbles and wide stone slabs that slope down to the sea. Behind the beach is a pine forest, providing significantly more natural shade than many open beaches on Vis. The tourist board of the town of Vis highlights Srebrna as the most famous beach on the island.

The water is very clear, and the light stones on the seabed give it intense blue and turquoise hues. The western part of the beach has a slightly more pleasant entry into the water, while the flatter stone slabs along the edges are good for sunbathing.

Access to Srebrna is by car through Rukavac, with parking available above the beach. From the car park to the sea, it is a short walk through the pines.

Srebrna is very busy during July and August. If peace, parking and a good shaded spot are priorities, arriving early in the morning is much more pleasant than coming in the middle of the day.

Interestingly, the beach has a much older story. On the stone slabs around Srebrna, traces of a former quarry can be seen, from which stone was extracted for the construction of the ancient Issa, present-day Vis, around 2,400 years ago. Part of the oldest quarry is now submerged due to rising sea levels.

Mala Srebrna – A Few Minutes Away, but a Completely Different Feel

Not far from the main Srebrna beach is Mala Srebrna, a significantly smaller and more secluded beach.

It lacks the width and large space of the main Srebrna, but this makes it appealing for those seeking a quieter swim. The pebbles, stone slabs and vegetation around the small cove create a more intimate space, and the waters by the rocks are good for snorkelling.

If staying in the Srebrna area, it makes sense to visit both beaches and then decide where to stay. During the peak season, Mala Srebrna can be a good alternative when the more well-known neighbouring beach is already crowded.

The old local name for this area is also interesting: the Geopark states that the name Srebarna originally belonged to the smaller neighbouring cove, while the larger Srebrna was once known as Lubandjera. Over time, the name Srebrna completely supplanted the old name of the main cove.

Tepluš – The Most Practical Beach for a Full Day Stay

On the other side of Rukavac lies Tepluš, a pebble beach that has a different character from Srebrna.

The beach is smaller, the entry into the water is pleasant, and due to the pebbly shore, it is often practical for families with children. Above part of the beach, there is a small pine grove, while large stone slabs on the northern part of the cove provide shade later in the afternoon.

Tepluš is accessed by a turn-off from the road to Srebrna, and parking is available in a spacious area very close to the beach. This easy access is one of its significant advantages.

Tepluš also has dining options right by the sea. Diamond Beach Restaurant & Bar operates as a beach bar and lunch spot during the day, transitioning to a restaurant serving fish, seafood and grilled dishes in the evening. SUP, kayaks, sun loungers and umbrellas are also available.

If one desires a simple day without moving the car – park, swim, have lunch and stay until evening – Tepluš is one of the most practical choices in Rukavac.

Ruda – For Those Who Find Srebrna and Tepluš Too Simple

West of Srebrna lies Ruda, a much quieter and less developed part of the coast.

Ruda does not have the atmosphere of a popular tourist beach. Access is more limited, there is no large car park, no beach bar or rows of sun loungers, and the cove is more appealing to those who do not mind putting in a bit more effort to reach it.

At the bottom of the cove are small natural beaches, while rocky shores and a few old fishing houses continue around them. It was once used by the residents of Marinjih Zemalja and Pliskog Polja as their fishing cove, connected to the sea by an old path from the interior.

Ruda also hides one of the more interesting natural features of this part of Vis. The rocks contain exceptionally high concentrations of fossilised rudists, molluscs that lived in warm shallow seas tens of millions of years ago. Due to such locations, this part of the coast is included in the Geostaza Vis–Rukavac.

For the average bather, it is not necessary to know geology for Ruda to be interesting. It is enough to know that it is a place for those who seek a smaller cove, fewer people and almost no tourist infrastructure.

Bili Bok – Stone Slabs East of Srebrna

From the eastern end of Srebrna towards the Punta od Polivala, Bili Bok stretches, an area of large light stone slabs that descend towards the sea like terraces.

This is not a classic pebble beach, but a spot for those who enjoy sunbathing on flat rocks and direct access to deep, clear waters. It is not as practical for small children as Tepluš or the main part of Srebrna, but it can be much more interesting for confident swimmers.

The entire stretch between Srebrna and Bili Bok is one of the most recognisable landscapes on the southern coast of Vis.

Ravnik and the Green Cave – The Easiest Boat Trip from Rukavac

In front of Rukavac lies Ravnik, the largest islet off the coast of Vis, and on its southwest side hides the famous Green Cave.

Ravnik is less than one nautical mile from Rukavac, making it one of the simplest boat trips if staying here. The tourist board of Vis explicitly mentions the possibility of short local trips from Rukavac to the Green Cave.

The Green Cave has two large sea entrances and an opening in the ceiling through which sunlight falls onto the water. The reflection of light, sea and rocks gives the interior characteristic greenish tones.

In calm waters, swimming in the cave is possible, making the experience completely different from a quick visit to the cave from a boat. A local trip from Rukavac is short enough to easily combine with the rest of the day at Tepluš or Srebrna.

Ravnik has no settlement or classic tourist infrastructure, so it is not a place to spend the whole day. The main experience is sailing around the islet, visiting the Green Cave and swimming along the coast.

Rukavac is a Much Older Fishing Village Than It Appears Today

The large number of apartments can easily give the impression that Rukavac emerged solely from tourism development. This is not the case.

Old maps record it under the name Porto Manego, and the cove has long been an important fishing spot on the southern side of Vis. At the end of the 19th century, the Komiža factory Mardešić opened its fish processing and salting facility here. Remnants of the former Mardešić sardine factory can still be found in Rukavac.

Fishermen from this part of Vis caught large quantities of small blue fish along the southern coast and towards the island of Sušac. The fish were salted in wooden barrels, and old photographs of Rukavac depict gajetas and fishermen precisely in this part of the harbour.

This is a story worth keeping in mind when sitting by the sea in Old Rukavac today. Behind the apartments and tourist beaches, there remains a clear fishing foundation of the place.

Geostaza Vis–Rukavac

Rukavac is the endpoint of the Geostaza Vis–Rukavac, which connects the natural and cultural history of this part of the island.

The trail is not designed solely for geologists. Along it, explanations are provided on how Vis was formed, where old sand dunes remain, why there are so many fossils in the rocks of Ruda, what the ancient quarry at Srebrna looked like, and what role Rukavac played as a fishing port.

If visiting Vis in spring or early autumn, when it is not too hot, this route is a good way to get to know Rukavac beyond the classic apartment-beach-restaurant circle.

Where to Eat in Rukavac?

Rukavac does not have a large selection of restaurants, and it is good to know this in advance.

For a proper lunch or dinner, the two main options are Konoba Dalmatino and Diamond Beach Restaurant & Bar.

Dalmatino is located by the sea in a quieter part of Rukavac and is more suited for a classic Dalmatian dinner – fresh fish, gregada, brodet, peka and a terrace overlooking the bay.

Diamond Beach is located at Tepluš. During the day, it is a more casual beach bar and lunch spot, while in the evening it functions more as a restaurant serving fish, seafood and grilled meats.

On Srebrna itself, there is also Silver Beach, but it is better considered a seasonal beach bar for drinks and simple snacks during swimming rather than a third proper restaurant.

If staying longer and wanting a wider choice of konobas, restaurants, shops and nightlife, the town of Vis is only about ten kilometres away.

The Port of Rukavac and Arrival by Boat

The Rukavac bay is the largest and best-protected cove on the southeast coast of Vis. Ravnik further protects the bay from the sea, which is one reason why Rukavac has had an important fishing function for centuries.

In New Rukavac, there is a concrete pier approximately twenty metres long. The depth along its sides is about three metres, but it quickly decreases towards the eastern part, and due to local moorings and ropes, it is not a simple tourist marina where one can just sail in and choose a free spot.

In the middle of the bay, the depth reaches about eight metres. The seabed is occasionally flat and harder, so the anchor may slide until it holds well.

Near Tepluš, there are also buoys for visiting vessels connected to a local concession, which is practical for sailors coming for lunch or dinner. It is always advisable to check current conditions and forecasts before overnight stays.

How to Get to Rukavac?

Rukavac is located about 10 kilometres by road from the town of Vis, where ferries and catamarans from the mainland arrive. After leaving the town, the drive goes through the interior of the island towards Podstražje, and then the road descends towards Rukavac.

For a stay in Rukavac, a car or scooter is very useful. It is possible to walk to Srebrna and Tepluš from certain parts of the village, but Rukavac is quite spread out, and having your own vehicle makes it significantly easier to explore the town of Vis, other parts of the island and more distant coves.

Before booking accommodation, it is worth checking the distance to the sea, not just the label "Rukavac". Accommodation near Old Rukavac offers a very different rhythm from a house in Gornji Rukavac or an apartment next to Srebrna.

Parking in Rukavac and at the Beaches

The parking situation depends on where you are going.

At Srebrna, cars are left above the beach, and the last few minutes are completed on foot.

At Tepluš, there is a more spacious parking area very close to the shore, making this beach more practical if arriving with a lot of things or small children.

At Ruda, do not expect organised parking, and access is significantly poorer.

In Rukavac itself, accommodations often have their own parking space, but this should definitely be checked before booking, especially in July and August.

Who is Rukavac a Good Choice For?

Rukavac is best suited for guests who value beaches and peace more than evening promenades and a wide selection of restaurants.

One can spend several days here almost without the need to go further: Srebrna and Tepluš are nearby, Ruda offers a quieter option, Ravnik and the Green Cave are accessible by a short boat ride, and in the evenings, one can dine by the sea.

For families, the combination of easy access to Tepluš, Srebrna with pine shade, and a relatively short drive to the town of Vis is particularly practical.

Couples and those seeking tranquility may prefer Old Rukavac and accommodation further from the main beach access points.

However, if one expects long promenades, many bars, shops, nightlife and dozens of restaurants within walking distance, the town of Vis or Komiža would be a better choice. Rukavac is a much quieter place, and this is its greatest advantage.

When is the Best Time to Visit Rukavac?

For a classic seaside holiday, July and August are the liveliest months, but during this time, Srebrna and Tepluš are the busiest, and parking around the beaches requires a bit more planning.

June and September are particularly well-suited for Rukavac. The sea is suitable for swimming, most seasonal facilities are operational, and it is usually easier to find a quieter spot on the beaches.

Spring and early autumn are excellent for the Geostaza Vis–Rukavac, walks between the coves and exploring the rocky parts of the coast that are very exposed to the sun in the height of summer.

When planning boat trips to Ravnik and swimming at more open beaches, it is always advisable to check the weather forecast. The southern coast of Vis looks completely different in strong southerly winds compared to calm summer days.

Rukavac is More Than Just Srebrna

Most people first hear about Rukavac because they are searching for the location of Srebrna beach. This is understandable – Srebrna is one of the most famous beaches on Vis.

However, Rukavac is interesting for a stay precisely because there is so much more around it.

In just a few kilometres, one can combine the fishing houses of Old Rukavac, morning swims at Tepluš, afternoon shade at Srebrna, the peacefulness of Ruda, dining by the sea, and a short boat ride to the Green Cave on Ravnik. Additionally, there are the old fishing pier, the ruins of the Mardešić sardine factory, the ancient quarry and the Geostaza that gives the entire landscape a deeper meaning.

Rukavac is not a place to visit for monumental sights or nightlife. Its value lies in the fact that a good part of a holiday on Vis can be spent by the sea, without much organisation, while still looking a little different each day.
