Srebrna Beach Rukavac Vis – one of the most famous beaches on the island
Srebrna Beach is located on the southeast coast of the island of Vis, right next to Rukavac, and is one of the most renowned beaches on the island. It is distinguished by large light pebbles, stone slabs that slope down to the sea, and a pine forest that lines the back of the beach. The name comes from the pebbles, which take on a characteristic silver sheen under the moonlight. The tourist board of the town of Vis lists Srebrna as the most famous beach on Vis.
Srebrna is not a typical fine pebble beach. The majority of the shoreline consists of large, completely rounded white and grey pebbles, along with wide smooth stone slabs where sunbathing is also possible. The western part of the beach has finer gravel, making entry into the sea somewhat more pleasant, which is why families with children often choose this area.
The water is very clear, and just a few metres from the shore, it takes on an intense blue and turquoise colour. The seabed is mostly rocky and pebbly, with a gradual increase in depth. Water shoes are not essential, but they can be useful due to the large pebbles, which may not be comfortable for everyone to walk on barefoot.
Shade at Srebrna Beach
One of the significant advantages of Srebrna compared to many open beaches on Vis is the pine forest immediately behind the shore. It provides ample shade for spending a large part of the day, which is particularly practical for families with children and for those who prefer not to be exposed to the strong summer sun all day. The official tourist board of Vis cites the abundance of natural shade as one of the reasons Srebrna is popular among families.
However, shade is not evenly distributed across the beach. If you wish to secure a spot under the pines during July and August, especially on weekends, it is advisable to arrive early as the most pleasant spots are quickly taken.
How to get to Srebrna Beach?
Srebrna can be reached via Rukavac, the largest coastal settlement in this part of Vis. Rukavac is approximately 10 kilometres from the town of Vis by road. Upon entering the settlement, follow the signs to Srebrna, and the road leads to a car park above the beach.
From the car park to the sea is about 250 metres on foot. The path descends through natural terrain and pine trees towards the beach, taking only a few minutes to walk. It is not a long or demanding access route, but the surface is not completely flat and well-maintained like a city promenade.
While it is possible to navigate the path with a pushchair with some extra care, due to the rocky and uneven surface, it is much more practical to consider using a baby carrier for very young children.
Parking at Srebrna
At the end of the road, there is a parking area about 250 metres from the beach. This is one of the advantages of Srebrna compared to some other well-known beaches on Vis, which require a long and steep descent.
During the peak season, Srebrna is very popular, so the car park can become quite full during the busiest parts of the day. To avoid searching for a space and to secure good shade on the beach, the best option is to arrive in the morning.
Are there facilities at Srebrna?
Srebrna remains primarily a natural beach, rather than a fully developed tourist bathing area. The beach area has basic elements such as signs that separate the bathing area, waste bins, changing rooms, and sanitary facilities.
In recent years, there has also been a seasonal catering offer during the peak season, but it is not advisable to rely on it as a permanent year-round service. For a full day’s stay, it is certainly wise to bring enough water, especially if visiting with children. Recent visitor experiences confirm the presence of a seasonal bar and sanitary facilities on the beach.
For a more substantial lunch or dinner, there are more options available in Rukavac itself, where restaurants and other tourist offerings can be found.
Is Srebrna suitable for children?
Srebrna is often recommended for families due to the combination of space, natural shade, and relatively easy access from the car park. The western part of the beach has a more pleasant shore and a gradual entry into the sea.
However, it should be noted that the pebbles on much of the beach are significantly larger than those on a typical pebble beach. Therefore, for very young children, it is more practical to settle closer to the area with finer gravel.
The pine forest behind the beach is particularly beneficial during the middle of the day, as it allows for a proper break from the sun between swims.
The sea, waves, and the sirocco
Srebrna faces the open sea on the southeast side of Vis. The waves during winter are one reason why its large pebbles are so smooth and rounded.
In calm summer weather, the sea is generally excellent for swimming and snorkelling. However, in stronger sirocco winds, the cove can experience waves, making Srebrna look completely different from the photographs taken during calm conditions. Nautical sources advise against relying on this cove as a safe anchorage for overnight stays due to its exposure to the sirocco.
If strong sirocco is forecasted, it is better to choose a more sheltered side of the island for swimming.
What else to see around Srebrna?
Srebrna is located in an area with several interesting bathing spots. Near Rukavac is Tepluš Beach, while the rocky coastline near Srebrna continues towards Bilo Boke. Each of these beaches has a different character, making it worthwhile to explore them as separate locations.
Excursions to Ravnik and the Green Cave, which is very close to the coast of Vis, are also organised from Rukavac. The tourist board states that Ravnik is less than one nautical mile from Rukavac.
Nevertheless, Srebrna is a beach where it makes perfect sense to stay for most of the day. It is spacious enough for visitors to spread out along the shore, has plenty of natural shade, the water is very clear, and the car can be parked relatively close. This combination makes it one of the most practical well-known beaches on Vis – it is attractive like the island's famous hidden coves, but does not require a long descent on foot or a drive along several kilometres of poor dirt roads.
