Konoba Vatrica – Fresh Fish and Dalmatian Cuisine by the Waterfront in Kut

Konoba Vatrica is located right by the coast in Kut, one of the most picturesque parts of the town of Vis. The terrace, shaded by vines, nearly touches the waterfront, with views of the sea, boats, and moorings in the Vis harbour. The atmosphere is typically Dalmatian and unpretentious, focusing primarily on good fish, simple cooking, and a relaxed dining experience by the sea.

Vatrica is a true konoba in terms of its offerings. The menu features a predominance of fish and seafood, alongside a selection of classic meat dishes, risottos, pasta, and homemade desserts. The best choice is often what is fresh that day, particularly if one desires whole fish grilled over an open flame.

Fresh Fish and Seafood

Fresh fish is one of Vatrica's main attractions. The selection varies according to the daily catch, and diners can choose their fish before it is prepared.

The simplest and often best option is grilled fish, served with Swiss chard and potatoes or vegetables. It is in such dishes that Vatrica truly showcases its character – without unnecessary sauces or complications, emphasising the quality of the ingredients and good preparation.

Alongside whole fish, one can order squid, prawns, shellfish prepared in a traditional style, tuna, and other seafood, depending on availability.

Black Risotto, Pasta e Fagioli, and Local Flavours

One dish particularly suited to this konoba is black risotto made with cuttlefish, rich in marine flavour and substantial enough to serve as a main course.

It is also worth noting the pasta e fagioli, a dish that better represents everyday Dalmatian cuisine than typical tourist combinations. At Vatrica, it may be served with fish, which is especially appealing to guests looking to try something more local than the classic grilled fish.

The menu also features fish soup, pasta with seafood, and other simple dishes that fit well within the character of the konoba.

Prawns, Squid, and Shellfish

If one does not wish to order whole fish, a good choice would be prawns, squid, or shellfish.

Prawns can be prepared grilled or in a traditional style, while squid is a classic choice for those seeking something simpler and lighter. Shellfish prepared in a traditional style works particularly well as a shared starter alongside bread and a glass of white wine.

Vatrica is not a place where the menu needs to feature ten different ways to prepare the same ingredient. The offerings are sufficiently varied but remain within the bounds of a classic Dalmatian konoba.

Meat Dishes

Although the focus is on fish and seafood, Vatrica also offers meat dishes, making it a suitable choice when not everyone at the table is in the mood for fish.

The menu includes steaks, pork chops, and other simple grilled dishes. These are typically accompanied by potatoes, vegetables, or salad.

Peka by Prior Arrangement

At Vatrica, it is possible to arrange for a meal cooked under a peka, but this is not something that can be ordered spontaneously upon arrival.

Peka requires time and preparation, so it is best to reserve in advance and specify what is desired. Depending on the season and available ingredients, the offering may include meat, fish, or octopus.

If one is coming specifically for peka, it is advisable to make a reservation earlier in the day or the day before.

Rožata and Desserts

To conclude the meal, it is worth asking if they have rožata. This classic Dalmatian dessert pairs well with the rest of the menu and the konoba's atmosphere.

The selection of sweets is not extensive nor does it need to be – Vatrica is primarily a place for fish, wine, and a tranquil dinner by the sea.

Wine with Fish

Local white wine naturally complements fish and seafood, and Vis has enough good labels to make it worthwhile to inquire about their current offerings.

If unfamiliar with Vis wines, it is advisable to seek recommendations based on specific dishes. Lighter white wines pair well with shellfish, squid, and fish, while something fuller can be chosen for heartier meat dishes.

In addition to wine, beers, aperitifs, brandies, and classic soft drinks are also available.

Terrace by the Sea

The terrace is one of the main reasons Vatrica leaves a positive impression.

Tables are set under the vines, right by the waterfront, with an open view of the Vis bay. There is little distance between the restaurant and the sea, allowing diners to enjoy their meals just a few metres from the moored boats.

The most pleasant time is in the evening when the sun is less intense, and Kut takes on its true rhythm – a stroll by the sea, bustling terraces, and boats remaining moored overnight.

Reservation

During the peak season, reservations are advisable, especially if a table by the edge of the terrace is desired.

Vatrica is not a large restaurant, and Kut fills up quickly in the evening. If a specific fresh fish or peka is desired, it is best to mention this when making the reservation.

How to Get There

The konoba is located by the waterfront in Kut.

From the main part of Vis near the ferry terminal, the most pleasant way to reach it is by walking along the promenade by the sea. One should allow approximately 15 to 20 minutes for a leisurely stroll.

For guests moored at the marina in Kut, Vatrica is practically within reach.

Parking

The konoba does not have its own large parking area adjacent to the restaurant.

Kut is an old part of Vis with limited space for cars, so it is best to use public parking spaces in the surrounding area and continue the last part on foot.

If already staying in the town, a car is not necessary.
