BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Mali Lošinj is a town, port and summer resort located on the island of Lošinj. It has a little over 6,000 inhabitants and is the largest settlement on the Adriatic islands. There are two ways to get there by car. The first way is to cross the Krk Bridge by car and arrive at the Krk port of Valbiska. From Valbiska, you can then take a ferry to the Merag port on the island of Cres and continue by car to the settlement of Osor, which is 47 kilometers away. There is a drawbridge next to Osor that takes you directly to Mali Lošinj. The second way is to arrive at the port of Brestova in eastern Istria and travel by ferry to the port of Porozina on the island of Cres. From Porozina, you can continue by car to Osor, which is 58 kilometers away, and cross the drawbridge and continue to Mali Lošinj. There is also a ferry line that goes from Zadar directly to Mali Lošinj, which runs once a day. Mali Lošinj has an airport with a smaller capacity, which is mainly intended for the arrival of small private planes, along with some foreign lines. Another option is to arrive at Rijeka Airport near Omišalj on the island of Krk. The nearest train station is in Rijeka (about 130 kilometers away), after which you can take a bus from Žabica station or a catamaran from the Rijeka port directly to Mali Lošinj. A catamaran also departs from Pula to Mali Lošinj.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
In ancient times, the Cres-Lošinj archipelago was called "Apsyrtides" because Cres and Lošinj once formed a whole. In a later period, a canal was dug near Osor due to trade needs. The island of Lošinj was uninhabited almost until the 13th century, but there are still some traces that indicate that it was a busy area. The spirit of antiquity in Mali Lošinj is brought by a world-class attraction that everyone must visit. The Apoxyomenos Museum exhibits a bronze ancient statue found in 1996 in the Lošinj seabed. The statue is 192 centimeters tall, depicts a young athlete and is believed to have been made in the 2nd or 1st century BC. A visit to the museum is a unique experience because the bronze statue and the period of antiquity can be experienced in different ways due to the modern arrangement of the exhibition space with digitalized content. Another museum space that can be visited is the Fritzi Palace, which houses a rich art collection by Croatian artists. There are numerous remains of sacral art and architecture in Mali Lošinj: the church of St. Martin from 1450, the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary from 1534, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary from 1775 and the Church of St. Nicholas from 1857.
