BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Makarska is a town of 14,000 inhabitants located in central Dalmatia, at the junction of Biokovo and the Adriatic Sea. It occupies a central position in the Makarska Riviera. The Makarska Riviera or Makarska Riviera is a microregion in the Split-Dalmatia County that extends over 53 km of coastline in a northwest-southeast direction, from Brela in the north to Gradac in the south. The nearest airports are in Split (Resnik), 50 km away, and on the island of Brač, with which it is connected by ferry, with the town of Sumartin. The drive takes 50 minutes. Makarska can be reached from Zagreb by motorway (the drive takes 5 hours), local roads and numerous bus lines. The city itself is located in a natural harbor between two peninsulas, Osejava and Sv. Petar.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
It is believed that Makarska was named after the nearby village of Makar. The first inhabitants of the area of today's Makarska were the Illyrians, who founded a settlement called Muccurum in the 4th century. Napoleon encouraged culture and built roads that connected Makarska with other coastal towns. A monument to him, today known as the Napoleon Monument, was erected at the western entrance to the city. Although Napoleon encouraged the development of culture and connectivity in Makarska, Austria-Hungary was responsible for the flourishing of tourism, which is the main economic activity of Makarska, as well as the entire region. In Makarska, you must visit the Malacological Museum of the Franciscan Monastery, which is also a protected cultural monument, the Kotišina Botanical Garden, the Makarska Observatory, the Makarska Co-Cathedral of St. Mark, the Antun Gojak City Gallery, the City Museum, the Mountains and Sea Institute, the Vepric Sanctuary near the city, as well as the Biokovo Nature Park... Tourists also have access to a large number of beds in hotel and private accommodation.
BEACHES
Makarska, as well as the entire coast, has kilometers of mostly pebble beaches with numerous catering facilities. In the city itself there are the beaches Nugal and Kraljev gaj, while in neighboring towns there are beautiful beaches with pine forests such as the beaches in Brela, Baška Voda, Podgora, Živogošće, Promajna, Drvenik, Gradac....
