St. James cathedral in Sibenik is the most significant architectural achievement of the 15th and 16th centuries. Due to its exceptional value the Cathedral in 2000 was included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage. The idea of building a cathedral dates back to 1298 when Sibenik gained its own diocese and the city. Construction began only in 1431 and lasted until 1536. The first decade of its work raising italian gothic builders and Sibenik's master stonecutters Andrija Budčić and Budiša Statčić. During that time, built the southern and northern wall, gothic part of the façade and both portals. At the cathedral worked Juraj Dalmatian, Radivoje Bogosalić, Radonja Grubacevic and Nikola Markovic.
