Fort St. Michael was erected at the mouth of the Krka river into the sea, on a rocky hill, the meters above sea level. On it started life town of Sibenik, which in historical sources first mentioned in the year 1066 during the Croatian king Petar Kresimir IV. At today's fortress identified continuity of works from the 13th to the 18th century, but most of the dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its floor plan has the shape of an irregular rectangle. In the eastern part of the fortress have been preserved two square, and the northern two polygonal towers. The main entrance of the Citadel, Gothic characteristics, located on the east side. Archaeological investigations within the monument complex were found numerous remains of material culture from prehistory to the late Middle Ages. Inside the fortress there is a church of Sv. Michael, who in historical sources first mentioned in the 12th century. Throughout the history of the fortress has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, and the greatest suffering experienced in 1663 and 1752 by the explosion of the powder plant located within its walls. From Fort St. Michael, the sea water double walls that end up on the shores of a large Gothic doorway. They were built at the beginning of the 15th century, and served for withdrawal defenders of the fortress to the sea in the event of an emergency.
