BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Sukošan is a small town and the seat of a municipality located in the Zlatna luka bay, 7 km southeast of Zadar, in Zadar County. The town itself has a population of about 3,000. The economy is based on tourism, agriculture, viticulture and olive growing. The location is excellent, it is directly connected to the A1 motorway, and the state road D8 - Adriatic Highway passes through the center. The municipality has the largest marina on the Adriatic - Marina Dalmacija, and nearby are Zadar Airport and the Zadar ferry port Gaženica. The Knin-Zadar railway line passes through Sukošan.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
The time of the settlement's founding is unknown, but it is assumed that it was founded during the Roman rule, as evidenced by the villa rustica on Barbir, the remains of the old Roman waterworks ("Fairy Wall"), and in several places in the village there are remains of Roman buildings and graves. Sukošan was first mentioned in a document from the 13th century. Visit the remains of the 15th-century summer residence of the Zadar archbishopric Palac, the Upper Gate, the parish church of St. Cassian, numerous small churches, underwater sites, and the old town core.
BEACHES
The pebble beach Dječji raj is the most famous beach in Sukošan. It has a lot of facilities for children and parents. Zlatna luka is a beach within the D-Marina marina, and Mala Makarska beach, with a combination of pebbles and stones, is also popular. Beach volleyball fans will go to Malenica beach.
OTHER CONTENT
A true Dalmatian atmosphere is offered by the taverns Griblja, Kod Guste, Piazzetta, Anton, Kaleta and others. In the restaurants Matanovi Dvori, Francesco, Stara riva, Veseljak, Bepo, Marinero and many others you can taste local and Mediterranean cuisine. During the summer, numerous events are organized such as fishermen's evenings, brudetijada, summer masquerades, sports and recreational programs, bull races and svićarenje, programs for children, klapa evenings - a truly rich program.
SPORT
Sukošan offers a range of options for those who want to enrich their vacation with other activities besides swimming and sunbathing. They can play basketball, football and five-a-side soccer, beach volleyball, hike, run, cycle, play bocce, dive, fish, try their hand at kitesurfing, windsurfing and paintball.
WHAT TO DO AND EXCURSION OPPORTUNITIES
Day trips are possible to Zadar and Šibenik or the slightly more distant Split. Ferries run daily from Zadar to the surrounding islands, and nearby are the national parks Krka, Paklenica, Kornati and Plitvice Lakes, as well as the nature parks Velebit, Vrana Lake and Telaščica. There is the possibility of rafting on the Zrmanja River.
