Gornja Krušica on Šolta – a tranquil cove and former fishing port

Gornja Krušica is located on the northeastern coast of Šolta, beneath Gornje Selo and opposite the western side of Brač. It is a small, deeply recessed cove with a few houses, private accommodation, boats, and natural swimming spots.

Historically, it served as a fishing port for the residents of Gornje Selo. People lived in the safer inland areas of the island, among fields, vineyards, and olive groves, descending to the coast for fishing and boating. Today, Gornja Krušica is primarily a peaceful retreat, lacking a promenade, hotels, and larger tourist facilities.

This location is not sought after for evening strolls, restaurants, or organised entertainment. It is best suited for guests who wish to be close to the sea, listen to the boats and waves, and spend a few days away from the busier island spots.

The cove on the northeastern side of Šolta

Gornja Krušica is situated on the side of the island facing Brač and the sea passage between the two islands. The cove is surrounded by green hills, pine trees, and Mediterranean vegetation, with houses lining the coast and gently rising slopes above the sea.

It should not be viewed as a standalone large settlement like Stomorska or Nečujam. Rather, it is a small coastal cluster of houses connected to Gornje Selo, without a separate centre or developed public amenities.

It is most lively during July and August, when the houses and apartments are fully booked. Outside the main season, it can be almost completely quiet.

Beach and swimming spots

At the end of the cove, there is a small natural beach, and swimming is also possible at other pebbly, rocky, and arranged parts of the coast.

The main shore consists of pebbles, cobbles, and stones. The easiest entry into the sea is from the middle of the beach, where the depth increases gradually. Along the edges of the cove, there are predominantly rocks, larger stones, and smaller concrete platforms in front of the houses.

Water shoes may be useful due to the stones, slippery areas, and potential sea urchins. In some places in the sea, there are ropes and moorings for local boats, so caution is advised when entering and swimming.

The beach is not large. During the main season, a few families can occupy a significant portion of the shore, so it is most pleasant to arrive early in the morning.

The sea, shade, and snorkelling

The water in Gornja Krušica is generally very clean and clear. The lighter pebbly and rocky bottom along the coast gives it green and turquoise hues.

The cove is good for swimming and snorkelling, especially along the rocky edges where the natural seabed and smaller fish can be seen. Further from the shore, the water becomes deeper, and during summer, small boats may be anchored in the cove.

The pines and vegetation provide some natural shade, but the shade is not evenly distributed along the entire coast. The main beach can be very sunny for most of the day, so it is advisable to bring a sunshade.

Facilities in Gornja Krušica

Gornja Krušica does not have a developed tourist infrastructure. There are no:

• public showers
• changing cabins
• toilets
• lifeguards
• rental sun loungers and umbrellas
• organised water sports
• reliable beach bars

In the cove itself, one should not expect a shop, bakery, ATM, or pharmacy. It is best to purchase water, food, and other essentials in Gornje Selo, Stomorska, or Grohote before heading down to the sea.

The lack of facilities may be a drawback for some, but it is precisely this that has kept Gornja Krušica quieter than most of the more well-known island coves.

How to reach Gornja Krušica

The cove can be accessed from Gornje Selo via a local road. The road is narrow, winding, and in some sections, tight enough that two wider vehicles cannot easily pass each other.

It is advisable to drive slowly and use the pull-ins along the road. Extra caution is needed in the bends, as vehicles coming from the opposite direction may not always be visible in time.

I would not recommend descending with a larger van, camper, or vehicle with a trailer without first checking the passage and turning possibilities.

The road ends in the cove area, so the same route is taken back to Gornje Selo. During summer, traffic increases during the arrival and departure of guests from the apartments.

Parking

There is no large, organised public parking along the coast. Space among the houses is limited, and many spots belong to private properties and their guests.

Day visitors should not expect to always find a free space right by the beach. Sometimes it may be necessary to leave the car further from the sea and walk the last part.

Vehicles should not be left:

• in front of house entrances
• in private parking areas
• next to boat launch sites
• at turning points
• on narrow sections of the road
• in access areas that must remain clear for emergency vehicles

Guests who book accommodation in Gornja Krušica should check in advance whether the property has its own parking space and how far it is from the apartment.

Arriving on foot or by bicycle

Gornja Krušica can also be reached on foot from Gornje Selo, but one should consider that the descent is downhill, while the return to the village is uphill.

Walking during the middle of the day in summer can be tiring as there is insufficient shade along the entire route. It is essential to bring water, head protection, and footwear suitable for asphalt and uneven edges of the path.

Descending by bicycle is easy, but the return climb requires fitness. An electric bike significantly eases the return to the island's interior.

The road is not specifically separated for cyclists and pedestrians, so care should be taken regarding vehicles, especially in blind bends.

Small harbour and arriving by boat

The cove has small boats and local moorings, but Gornja Krušica is not a marina or a developed port for sailors.

There are no reception areas, transit berths, electricity and water connections, sanitation facilities, or boat services. Free space along the coast does not automatically mean that a berth is available for visiting boats.

Boats can anchor on their own anchor, provided the depth, seabed, and weather forecasts are checked. The depth ranges from shallower areas at the western end of the cove to significantly deeper waters towards the exit.

Boats should not be anchored too close to the beach and the area where people swim. When entering the cove, speed should be reduced as swimmers may be far from the shore and not easily visible from the boat.

Wind and swimming conditions

Gornja Krušica is located on the northeastern side of Šolta, so conditions depend on the wind direction. The cove offers protection from some western and southern winds, but it is not safe in all weather conditions.

The bora and winds from the northern and northeastern directions can raise waves, cool the air, and make staying by the coast uncomfortable. It is advisable to check the wind direction before arrival, not just the temperature and the possibility of rain.

After rough seas, algae, branches, and other natural materials may wash up on the beach. Since this is not a city beach that is maintained daily, the appearance of the coast changes depending on the weather.

Accommodation in Gornja Krušica

Accommodation mainly consists of private apartments and holiday homes. The greatest advantage is the proximity to the sea and the ability to walk to the beach.

Many properties have terraces facing the cove, but houses on the slope may have steps and steep access. Before booking, it is advisable to check:

• whether the property has its own parking
• how far it is from the sea
• whether there is a steep staircase leading to it
• whether there is air conditioning
• whether there is a kitchen and storage space for groceries
• what access is like with larger luggage

A stay without a car is possible, but it is not practical for daily shopping and dining out. The cove itself does not have all the services needed for a longer holiday.

Restaurants and shops in the vicinity

For restaurants, cafés, and evening strolls, Stomorska is the most convenient option. There, you will find a promenade, a shop, dining establishments, and several arranged swimming spots.

In Gornje Selo, there are local dining and agricultural facilities, including Konoba Štandarac. However, it is advisable to check the menu and opening hours before arrival, especially outside the main season.

For larger shopping, a pharmacy, post office, ATM, and other services, it is best to go to Grohote.

Gornja Krušica with children

The small pebble beach and gradual entry into the sea may suit families with children, especially if they are staying in the cove itself.

However, there are no lifeguards, designated shallow areas, playgrounds, or public toilets. Along the coast, there are boats, ropes, slippery stones, and small piers, so children should be supervised at all times.

Pushchairs are not practical on all parts of the coast due to steps, narrow passages, and uneven surfaces. Accessibility largely depends on the exact location of the accommodation and swimming spots.

The beach is not specifically adapted for wheelchair users.

The best time to visit

June and September are the best months for guests who want warm water, fewer people, and easier parking.

In July and August, the most pleasant swimming is early in the morning when the sea is calmer, the beach is emptier, and the sun is not yet too strong.

Spring and autumn are suitable for walking, cycling, and a peaceful stay by the sea, but outside the season, fewer restaurants and other services are open nearby.

In winter, Gornja Krušica is almost completely quiet and exposed to weather changes from the sea.

Above the cove lies Gornje Selo, with its well-preserved stone core and large parish church of St. John the Baptist.

Nearby, you can also find the shrine of Our Lady of Stomorja and Vela Straža, the highest peak of Šolta and one of the best viewpoints on the island.

For restaurants, a promenade, and a livelier atmosphere, one can visit Stomorska. From Gornje Selo, it is also easy to reach Nečujam, Grohote, and other places in the eastern and central parts of the island.

It is best experienced by guests who stay here for a few days. Morning swims, returning to the apartment without driving, and evenings by the calm sea are more important than a wide range of amenities.

For a day visit, one should come prepared, bringing water and food, and not counting on easy parking by the coast. Those who accept these limitations can find in Gornja Krušica what is increasingly rare on the more well-known Adriatic beaches – a quiet cove without crowds and unnecessary noise.
