Gornja Krušica Beach – A Tranquil Bathing Spot in a Pine Cove on Šolta
Gornja Krušica Beach is located at the end of the cove of the same name on the northeastern side of Šolta, facing Brač. It is a small and peaceful natural bathing area surrounded by houses, greenery, and pine trees that almost reach the sea.
Visitors should not expect a wide, well-maintained beach or many tourist facilities here. Gornja Krušica is more suited to those who prefer smaller island beaches, clear waters, and a quieter atmosphere without loud music and large groups of bathers.
Beach Surface and Sea Entry
The main part of the beach consists of pebbles, stones, and rocks. Along the edges of the cove, there are cliffs, smaller concrete sections, and piers primarily used by residents and guests of nearby houses.
The easiest entry into the sea is via the central pebbly area. The depth gradually increases along the shore, while further into the cove, the water becomes deeper.
Water shoes may be useful due to the stones, slippery rocks, and potential sea urchins. Caution is also advised regarding ropes and boat moorings that can be found in certain areas of the water.
The water is generally very clear, especially when there is no bora wind or strong waves. The beach is suitable for swimming and snorkelling, and along the rocky sides of the cove, one can observe the natural rocky seabed and small fish.
Natural Shade
One of the advantages of Gornja Krušica is the greenery surrounding the cove. The pines and other Mediterranean vegetation provide some natural shade, particularly along the edges of the beach.
However, the shade moves throughout the day and is not sufficient for all bathers. The central part of the shore can be completely exposed to the sun, so it is advisable to bring an umbrella for longer stays.
Beach Facilities
The beach is natural and lacks developed tourist infrastructure. Do not expect:
- public showers
- changing cabins
- toilets
- lifeguards
- sunbed and umbrella rentals
- beach bars
- shops or bakeries
Visitors should bring water, food, and all necessities before descending into the cove. The nearest substantial supplies can be found in Gornje Selo, Stomorska, or Grohote.
Space on the beach is limited, so it is important to leave clear pathways to the houses and not occupy areas designated for boat access.
How to Reach Gornja Krušica Beach
The cove can be accessed from the direction of Gornje Selo and Stomorska. Local sources indicate a walking path from Gornje Selo, while the road leads from Stomorska.
The access road is narrow and winding, and in some sections, two wider vehicles may struggle to pass each other. It is advisable to drive slowly and utilise pull-ins along the way.
I would not recommend descending with a larger van, camper, or vehicle with a trailer without first checking the passage and turning options.
It is also possible to walk from Gornje Selo. The route to the sea is mostly downhill, but one should anticipate an uphill return. In summer, it is best to set off early in the morning or later in the afternoon as there is insufficient shade along the entire route.
Parking
There is no large, organised public parking area directly by the beach. Space among the houses is limited, and many parking spots belong to private properties and their guests.
Day visitors should not expect to always find a free space right by the shore. Sometimes, it may be necessary to park a bit further away and walk the last part.
Do not park in front of house entrances, at turning points, along boat access paths, or on narrow sections of the road. Access must remain clear for local residents and emergency vehicles.
Beach with Children
The pebbly entry and calm waters may be suitable for families with children, especially if they are staying in Gornja Krušica.
However, there are no lifeguards, designated shallow areas, playgrounds, or toilets at the beach. Boats, piers, and moorings are present along the shore, so children should be supervised at all times.
Pushchairs are not practical on all access routes due to narrow paths, steps, and uneven surfaces. The beach is not particularly accessible for those using wheelchairs.
Wind and Best Swimming Times
Gornja Krušica is situated on the northeastern side of Šolta. When the bora wind or stronger winds from the north blow, waves can enter the cove, making the beach experience less pleasant.
Before visiting, it is wise to check the wind direction, not just the air temperature. When the weather is stable, the sea is usually calmest early in the morning.
June and September are pleasant due to fewer bathers and easier parking. In July and August, it is advisable to arrive early as the beach is small and fills up quickly.
What to Bring
For a visit to the beach, it is recommended to bring water, a light meal, an umbrella, sun protection, water shoes, and a snorkelling mask.
As this is not a large, regularly maintained urban beach, all waste should be taken away with you.
Who Will Enjoy the Beach
Gornja Krušica Beach is a good choice for those seeking a small natural shore, clear waters, partial shade from the pines, and swimming without large tourist crowds.
It may be less suitable for those looking for a beach bar, sunbeds, showers, easy parking by the sea, or a large beach with plenty of space.
It is particularly favoured by those staying in the cove itself, as they can walk to the beach without the need for parking or carrying many items. For day visitors, getting there requires a bit more planning, but when the sea is calm, Gornja Krušica offers a very pleasant and unobtrusive island bathing experience.
