Martinis Marchi Castle – The Historical Centre of Maslinica

Martinis Marchi Castle is located right by the coast, on the southern side of Maslinica harbour. Its stone façades and tall tower are visible upon entering the village, and together with the promenade and boats in the harbour, they create the most recognisable sight in Maslinica. Today, within the restored castle, there is a heritage hotel, meaning it is not a typical landmark that one can freely enter and explore independently. However, the building is clearly visible from the promenade and public areas around the harbour, making it an essential part of a stroll through the village.

The Fortress Around Which Maslinica Developed

The castle was built in the early 18th century by the noble Marchi family, after they received permission to construct a defensive tower, settlement, and church above Maslinica bay. The fortress was completed around 1708, at a time when the western bays of Šolta were vulnerable to attacks from the sea, and this part of the island did not yet have a developed permanent settlement.

As a result, the structure is designed more as a fortress than a classic country palace. It features a closed inner courtyard, strong stone walls, and a prominent multi-storey tower. The outer parts still display defensive elements that hark back to the original purpose of the complex. The castle served not only as the residence of the Marchi family but also as a protected centre around which the present-day Maslinica gradually formed.

What Can Be Seen Today

The best view of the castle is from the promenade and the opposite side of the harbour. From there, the enclosed stone structure, tall tower, and the complex's position right by the sea are clearly visible. The building stands out particularly when viewed alongside the old houses of Maslinica, the marina, and the islets at the entrance to the bay.

The castle has been restored and now houses the Martinis Marchi Heritage Hotel. The hotel rooms, garden, pool, and other indoor spaces are not museum exhibits open for public viewing. There is also a restaurant within the complex with a separate entrance, but dining there does not include the opportunity to tour the entire castle.

For external viewing, it is best to walk along the promenade in front of the castle and then cross to the opposite side of the harbour, where the entire complex can be seen. From this position, it is easy to understand why the fortress was built here – it oversaw the entrance to the bay and protected the area where the settlement later developed.

How to Get There and Where to Park

The castle is located in the very centre of Maslinica. It takes just a few minutes of easy walking from the bus stop, the main part of the promenade, and most dining establishments. The approach from the promenade is short and mostly flat, so no special footwear or significant physical fitness is required for external viewing.

It is possible to drive close to the centre, but traffic and parking along the promenade can be limited during the summer. The hotel’s parking is not a public car park available to all visitors, so vehicles should be left in available public or permitted spaces within the settlement, and the rest of the journey continued on foot.

The external area is suitable for visiting with children, and the promenade in front of the castle is accessible for older adults. For those with reduced mobility, the easiest access is along the coast, although some old paths around the building may have uneven stone surfaces. Access to the interior depends on the rules and conditions of the hotel and should be checked directly with the establishment prior to arrival.

The Best Time to Visit

The castle can be viewed from the outside all year round. For walking and photography, the most pleasant times are early in the morning when the promenade is quieter, or late in the afternoon when the sun illuminates the stone façades and the harbour. In the evening, the castle is beautifully visible from the opposite side of the bay, especially when the lights in the harbour are turned on.

During the summer, the area around the hotel, restaurant, and marina is significantly livelier, while outside the main season, it is easier to quietly explore the external area and the old core of Maslinica. The visit itself does not require a lot of time, but it is worth combining it with a walk along the promenade, through the old streets, and up to the Church of St Nicholas.

Martinis Marchi Castle is not a standalone museum or historical palace open for free exploration, but it is much more than just the backdrop of the current hotel. It is a building around which Maslinica was formed, and understanding the history of the place is difficult without it. It is best viewed as the central part of the old harbour and one of the most important historical landmarks of western Šolta.
