Šumpjivina Beach in Nečujam – a quieter part of the cove known best by locals

Šumpjivina is one of those coves in Nečujam that one does not stumble upon by chance. It is situated on the western side of the large Nečujam cove, quite a distance from the main beach, shops, and most cafés. As a result, it tends to be quieter here even in the height of summer compared to the central part of the village. It is primarily frequented by those staying in nearby houses and apartments, as well as those who are already familiar with Nečujam and wish to escape the main crowds.

The distance from the centre of Nečujam to Šumpjivina is approximately 2.5 kilometres by road. Walking takes about half an hour, possibly longer if it is hot or if one is coming from the lower part of the settlement. The path is not particularly difficult, but it is not a short stroll along the coast either. For convenience, a car, scooter, or bicycle is recommended for the journey.

An asphalted local road leads to the cove through the western part of Nečujam. The road is narrow, and in some places, there is not much room for passing, especially when vehicles are parked along the edge. The final stretch descends towards the sea between houses, dry stone walls, and greenery. For first-time visitors, it is advisable to drive slowly as there may not always be enough space to turn around.

Parking is the main practical issue at Šumpjivina. There is no large public car park near the beach. Vehicles are generally left in smaller lay-bys along the road or in areas above the shore, but care must be taken not to occupy private spaces and to keep the road clear. In July and August, it is better to arrive early as several suitable spots fill up quickly. Often, it is wiser to park a bit further away and walk the last part rather than trying to get as close to the sea as possible.

Šumpjivina is not a large, well-maintained beach. The cove consists of several smaller bathing areas. In one spot, the shore is pebbly, while elsewhere there are concrete surfaces and small piers, with natural rocks in between. This variety allows everyone to find a section that suits them. Families typically opt for the more accessible pebbly area, while adults and more proficient swimmers often settle on the concrete and rocky surfaces.

Access to the sea in the pebbly area is generally gentle and straightforward. The shallow water contains stones, smaller pebbles, and seaweed, so water shoes can be beneficial, especially for children. Near the piers and concrete areas, the water is somewhat deeper, and in some places, entry is via steps.

The greatest advantage of Šumpjivina is the calm sea. The cove is well sheltered, and on most summer days, the water is pleasant for swimming. However, the bora wind can be felt here and may bring waves, so after a strong bora, the sea may not be as calm as usual. There are also private boats moored in the cove, but there is not much maritime traffic compared to the ferry port.

There is natural shade along the edges, beneath pine trees and other vegetation, but one should not expect the entire beach to be in shadow. The most shade is found behind the shoreline, while the pebbles, piers, and concrete areas along the sea are exposed to sunlight for most of the day. For a longer stay, it is advisable to bring a sunshade, especially when visiting with children.

There are no beach bars, restaurants, or shops at Šumpjivina. There is also no organised rental of sun loungers, pedal boats, or sunshades. One should not expect public toilets, showers, or changing cabins either. It is best to bring everything needed for a day at the beach from the centre of Nečujam, including water and something to eat.

Šumpjivina is the best choice for those who do not prioritise facilities and prefer a smaller, quieter cove. It may not be the most practical due to the narrow road and limited parking, but this is precisely why there are not as many passing bathers here. Those seeking a more tranquil swimming experience and who do not mind bringing everything with them can find one of the more pleasant parts of Nečujam at Šumpjivina.
