BOKun Stomorska – Dalmatian bites, local wines and cocktails by the sea
BOKun is a small gastro bar located right by the sea on the western side of Stomorska bay, just a few minutes' walk from the central promenade and the marina. It is situated along the coastal stretch towards Veli Dolac, near the Turanj restaurant, but its offerings and service style clearly set it apart from the traditional fish restaurants and pizzerias in the area.
The concept is based on smaller cold and warm dishes intended for sharing. Instead of the usual starter and large main course, here you order several different plates that together make up a lunch or dinner. The name BOKun aptly describes this approach – 'bokun' means a piece or a bite, and through multiple smaller portions, one can explore the various flavours of Dalmatia and the Mediterranean.
The menu features cold and warm bites prepared from vegetables, cheese, fish, meat, and other seasonal ingredients. The offerings are not strictly traditional Dalmatian cuisine, but rather a more contemporary interpretation of familiar island and Mediterranean flavours. Some dishes combine local ingredients with ideas that are not typically found in classic konobas.
Among the combinations that well represent their style are spreads and smaller plates such as hummus, caponata, whipped feta, and roasted beetroot. Depending on the season and the current menu, the offerings change, making BOKun more appealing to guests who enjoy trying a variety of dishes rather than those who expect a specific type of fish, pizza, or a large meat meal.
It is best to visit in pairs or small groups and order several plates for the centre of the table. The staff can assist with selections and explain how many portions are sufficient for a light dinner versus a full meal. Since the dishes vary in size and heartiness, it is not always straightforward to gauge the quantity based solely on the number of plates ordered.
An important part of the offering consists of local and other Croatian wines. Instead of a long, impersonal wine list, the emphasis is on bottles that can be paired with food and the Mediterranean character of the bar. It is worth asking which wines are available by the glass that day and what pairs best with the chosen dishes.
BOKun is also known for its cocktails. This is not just a selection of standard drinks served with dinner, but a carefully crafted part of the menu. Alongside classic cocktails, there are also signature combinations featuring Mediterranean ingredients, herbs, citrus, and other seasonal flavours.
As a result, BOKun works well as a place to simply come for a drink in the evening. One can order a cocktail or a glass of wine along with one or two smaller bites, without the obligation to sit down for a lengthy dinner. This sets it apart from most establishments in Stomorska, which primarily focus on traditional lunch or dinner.
The menu also includes homemade desserts. As with the savoury dishes, the selection may vary, so it is best to ask what is being prepared that day. Desserts are intended as a conclusion to the evening alongside coffee, dessert wine, or a cocktail, rather than as a large separate pastry offering.
The space is smaller and more intimate than the larger restaurant terraces along the promenade. Seating is by the coast, just a few steps from the sea and the boats moored in the bay. The atmosphere is relaxed, but it is evident that attention is paid to the presentation of food, selection of drinks, and explanation of the menu.
The most pleasant time to visit is in the evening, when the sun begins to set, and the terrace takes on a true summer vibe. BOKun is suitable for couples, small groups, and guests who prefer a quieter setting to enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail. It is not practical for very large parties like restaurants with numerous tables.
During the peak season, it is advisable to make a reservation, especially if you wish to dine at the usual time or secure a table closest to the sea. BOKun is a newer and smaller venue, so available spots can fill up quickly. A reservation is also beneficial as the concept is best experienced without haste, allowing ample time for several courses of smaller dishes.
BOKun is not the best choice for guests seeking a large pizza, a classic portion of fried fish, or a standard grill platter. Its offerings are aimed at those who wish to sample a variety of flavours, share dishes, and enjoy well-selected wine or quality cocktails with their food.
Families with young children should check the current menu before visiting, as there is no standard children's menu typically found in pizzerias. Older children and guests open to new flavours may find the sharing concept interesting, but BOKun's atmosphere is more geared towards adults, couples, and smaller groups.
The bar is a short walk from the centre of Stomorska, taking just a few minutes. The path runs along the sea, is nearly flat, and easy to navigate. It is particularly convenient for sailors, as it is a short stroll from the guest moorings in the harbour, without the need for a car or taxi.
Arriving by car is not the best option. The coastal road is narrow, and the number of permitted parking spaces near houses and hospitality establishments is very limited. BOKun does not have a large parking area for its guests, so it is better to leave the car in a wider and permitted space before entering the narrowest part of the village and continue on foot.
Operations are primarily linked to the tourist season, and current opening hours and days off may change during the pre-season, peak summer, and post-season. It is advisable to check if the venue is open on the day of your visit outside of July and August.
BOKun is one of the more interesting newer places in Stomorska as it does not attempt to be just another classic konoba. Its uniqueness lies in the small Mediterranean plates, sharing food, local wines, and cocktails, all served in a simple space right by Stomorska bay.
