Konoba Jastožera in Komiža

Konoba Jastožera is located on the northern side of Komiža Bay, a few minutes' walk from the waterfront towards Gusarica, very close to Konoba Bako. The arrival itself indicates that this is not an ordinary fish tavern: tables are set above and right by the sea, and beneath the old stone building is a space where live lobsters were once kept for sale and export.

Jastožera is one of the places in Komiža that makes sense to reserve for a somewhat special dinner. The main reason for visiting is lobster, followed by fresh fish and seafood, and the ambiance is almost as important as the food. It is particularly pleasant to arrive in the evening while there is still daylight, allowing one to see the entire space before dinner transitions into a nighttime atmosphere by the sea.

Lobster is the main attraction here

If one wishes to eat lobster in Komiža, Jastožera is one of the first places to consider. Live lobsters are kept in a sea pool or cage next to the restaurant, continuing the original purpose of this space.

They are prepared in several ways: grilled, boiled, gratinated, in a sauce, or as a stew with pasta. For a first visit, the two most interesting options are quite different.

Grilled lobster is best when one wants minimal additions and the taste of the meat itself. This makes particular sense with a good, larger specimen that is shared at the table.

The second option is lobster with tagliatelle, where the juices of the lobster blend into the sauce and pasta. This is a heartier dish and often more practical for two people who do not want to spend the entire dinner separating the lobster at the table.

When ordering, it is essential to ask how much the lobster weighs and what the price will be before preparation. Lobsters in such restaurants are often priced by weight, so it is better to know in advance what size specimen corresponds to the number of people.

It is not necessary to order the largest lobster

For two people, it is not always wise to take the largest lobster offered. If a salad of octopus, shellfish, or another appetizer is planned before the main course, a smaller specimen is often quite sufficient.

It is advisable to inform the staff right away how many people will be eating lobster and whether anything else is planned to be ordered. This makes it easier to choose a specimen that is neither too small nor unnecessarily large.

If opting for lobster with pasta, there is no need to overdo it with appetizers. Such a dish is rich enough to be the centerpiece of the entire dinner.

Fish is a better choice if lobster is not desired

Jastožera is not a restaurant where one must eat lobster. Fresh fish is also an important part of the menu, and it is best to ask what they have that day before ordering.

The same rule applies to whole fish as with lobster: before preparation, ask about the type, approximate weight, and price. For two people, one larger fish often makes more sense than two separate portions.

If a simpler dinner is desired, grilled fish with vegetables or potatoes fits well with the character of the place. At a table by the sea, there is no need to necessarily seek the most complicated dish on the menu – good fish, olive oil, and a glass of local wine are often a better combination.

Start with something from the sea

Octopus salad is a natural choice for an appetizer, especially if fish follows. For two, one portion is usually enough to share.

It is also worth checking if they have shellfish, shrimp, or some other daily seafood appetizer. The offerings may not be the same every day, so at Jastožera, it is better to ask what is currently good rather than pre-assembling an order based on an old menu found online.

If the main dish is lobster, the appetizer should remain simple. The goal is not to reach the most important dish but to be completely satisfied.

Wine from Vis with lobster and fish

Jastožera has a well-developed wine list with a large number of labels from Dalmatia, and it is particularly worth looking at what they offer from Vis.

With lobster and white fish, local white wines from Vis pair well, especially vugava, while stronger meat dishes can be complemented with plavac. If a whole bottle is not desired, it is worth asking what is available by the glass.

It is advisable to listen to the staff's recommendations as the choice of wine depends significantly on whether the lobster is grilled, in a sauce with pasta, or if a completely different dish is being ordered.

The old lobster facility is not just the name of the restaurant

The space was not later constructed to look like an old fishing tavern. This was indeed a lobster facility – a place where live lobsters were kept before further sale and transport.

Construction began in the late 19th century, and the building was completed in the early 20th century. At a time when there was no modern cold chain, live lobsters from Komiža were stored here and then sent to European cities.

Knowing this gives the space context. It should not be visited as a museum, but it is worth observing how stone, sea, and wooden parts of the restaurant are connected to the lobster pool. Jastožera is not just a name on the menu but literally describes what this space once was.

The table from the film Mamma Mia!

Jastožera became even more famous after filming the movie Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, part of which was shot right here. The special table and characteristic opening towards the sea will be easily recognized by those who have seen the film.

As a result, during the summer, guests come who find the film location as interesting as the restaurant itself. If that particular table is important, it is not advisable to assume it will be available – it should be specifically mentioned when making a reservation.

Even without the film story, the space is interesting enough on its own, so Jastožera does not solely depend on Mamma Mia's publicity.

Arriving by boat is practically possible for dinner

One of the more unusual practical aspects of Jastožera is arriving from the sea. A smaller boat or tender can approach the restaurant through the opening on the western side, and the restaurant has several moorings that guests can use during dinner.

This is particularly interesting for sailors anchored or moored in Komiža Bay. Instead of navigating the entire harbor, one can arrive almost directly at the restaurant.

However, it is advisable to check the mooring availability before arrival, especially in the high season. The number of spots is not unlimited, and the size and draft of the vessel can also affect accessibility.

For guests staying on land, a boat is, of course, not necessary – from the center of Komiža to Jastožera, it is a very pleasant short walk along the northern side of the bay.

Reservations are truly worthwhile

I would not leave Jastožera for spontaneous table searching in the most sought-after evening time during July and August. Especially if a better table by the sea is desired or if a larger group is coming, making a reservation a few days in advance makes sense.

It is good to mention right away if lobster is planned. If there is a specific wish regarding preparation, size, or table, it is easier to arrange this before arrival than when the terrace is already full.

For a somewhat quieter dinner, it is good to arrive earlier, while the peak crowd has not yet started. The bonus is that the space is much better appreciated before dark.

This is not a place for a quick and cheap lunch

Jastožera makes more sense for a planned dinner than for a quick meal after the beach. Lobster, quality fish, and an extensive wine list naturally raise the bill, especially when ordered by weight.

Those who want pizza, quick squid, or a simple daily lunch in Komiža have many more suitable places. Here, both the uniqueness of the ingredients and the very unusual ambiance are paid for.

Therefore, it is best to know in advance what one wants to eat. If coming primarily for lobster, it should be placed at the center of the dinner and not clutter the table with unnecessary orders.

How to get from the center of Komiža

From the main waterfront, head towards the northern side of Komiža Bay, through the old part of the town towards Gusarica. Jastožera is located right by the sea, near Konoba Bako, and it takes about ten minutes of leisurely walking from the center.

A car is not necessary. The streets of the old part of Komiža are narrow, and there is no need to count on traditional public parking for guests near the tavern.

If coming from another part of the island, it is best to leave the vehicle at public parking in Komiža and continue on foot to the restaurant.

Who is best suited for Jastožera

I would choose Jastožera for a special fish dinner, especially when one wants to try lobster and when the ambiance by the sea is an important part of the overall experience.

For a first visit, a good combination is simply a seafood appetizer, then lobster prepared in one of the ways that best suits the group, and a bottle of local wine. If lobster is not the reason for coming, it is better to ask right away for the best fresh fish of the day.

Jastožera stands out from most Komiža restaurants precisely because the space and food are connected. One sits in an old lobster facility where live lobsters were kept for decades before anyone thought about a tourist restaurant at this location. And when tables over the sea, the possibility of arriving by boat, and the fact that scenes from the film Mamma Mia! were shot here are added, it is clear why this tavern is remembered even after returning from Vis.
