Vis

BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION

Vis is a town on the island of Vis, in the Split-Dalmatia County. The town of Vis has 11 settlements. It is located in a deep, naturally protected bay, the Bay of St. George, on the northeastern side of the island of Vis. The port of Vis is protected from the influence of the open sea by the islet of Host and the Pirovo peninsula. Within the bay there are also smaller fishing grounds in the areas of Kut and Stonca. The town is separated from the fertile fields in the interior by a belt of high hills. The area of the town also includes the indented southern and southeastern coast with numerous bays and the islets of Budihovac and Ravnik. According to the latest census, the town of Vis has nearly 2,000 inhabitants who are dedicated to fishing, tourism and viticulture. Vis can be reached by ferries and catamarans from the largest Dalmatian port of Split.

CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS

The first settlement on the present-day area of Vis was called Issa, and it was founded by Greek colonizers from Sicily in the 4th century BC. They, like many later conquerors, were attracted by its favorable strategic position on the open sea, from where they could control the sea routes on the Adriatic. Until the 1st century BC and the Roman conquest, it managed to preserve its independence and importance, then it lost its importance. The remains of ancient Issa are still visible today (thermal baths, necropolis, theater, parts of the tower). In addition to the above, it is worth visiting the summer residences of the Hvar and Vis nobles, fortresses from various historical periods, the churches of St. Cyprian and the Holy Spirit, the parish church of Our Lady of Spilica, the Franciscan monastery on the Pirovo peninsula, and the sanctuary of Our Lady of Podselje-Velo Selo.

BEACHES

Rocky and pebble beaches stretch along the city and its surroundings. These include Pirovo, Grandovac, Punta od Biskupa, Stonca, Vela Svitnja, and the most famous is the beautiful Stiniva Bay.
