Mvsevm Vis – Specialty Coffee, Croatian Wine, and Maritime Collection in the Center of Vis

Mvsevm is one of the more unusual places in the town of Vis – it serves as a specialty coffee bar, wine bar, and a small private museum of maritime history. It is located on Korzo, slightly set back from the main waterfront, making it easy to miss if one is unaware of what lies behind the door.

In the morning, visitors come primarily for the carefully prepared coffee, while later in the day, the atmosphere shifts completely, and Mvsevm becomes a place for a glass of wine, Dalmatian snacks, and a quieter evening. This all takes place among antique furniture, porcelain, and hundreds of original items related to maritime and naval history that have passed through the Adriatic over the years.

This combination is what makes Mvsevm special. It is not a museum with a bar added by chance, nor is it a bar decorated with a few old items – the collection and the hospitality aspect are designed as a cohesive whole.

Specialty Coffee is Taken Seriously

Mvsevm began developing its specialty coffee offerings in 2019, at a time when such options were almost nonexistent in Vis.

The coffee comes from specialty roasters, with Zagreb's Cogito Coffee Roasters playing an important role, and the preparation method is much more precise than in a typical island café. Espresso is dosed and monitored during extraction, and alternative brewing methods are also offered.

It is worth asking which coffee is currently being used, as the beans and origins change. This is part of the concept – the goal is not to always have the same taste but to showcase different varieties, countries of origin, and characteristics of specialty coffee.

Coffee is often served in old porcelain cups, which fits well with the overall space and gives the morning visit a distinctly different character from regular coffee by the waterfront.

A Wine Bar with a Focus on Croatia

In the evening, Mvsevm transforms into a serious wine bar.

The wine list is not composed solely of the most well-known commercial labels. The emphasis is on Croatian wines, smaller Dalmatian producers, indigenous varieties, and natural wines, along with a few classic labels from other Croatian regions.

Many wines are available by the glass, so it is not necessary to order a whole bottle right away. This is particularly interesting if one wishes to taste several different Dalmatian varieties or compare wines from Vis with those from other parts of Croatia.

It makes sense to ask for recommendations here. Wines are chosen not just based on price or name recognition, but according to style, producer, and the story behind the bottle, and discussing wine is part of the overall experience.

Dalmatian Snacks with Wine

Mvsevm is not a restaurant and should not be planned as such. The food is primarily intended as an accompaniment to the wine.

Cold Dalmatian snacks and platters with cheeses, cured meats, and other local delicacies are offered, along with anchovies and smaller Mediterranean bites.

This is sufficient for a light dinner or sharing alongside a bottle of wine, but it is not a place to come for a large main dish, grilled fish, or a full restaurant menu.

This is how Mvsevm functions best – a few smaller snacks, different wines by the glass, and enough time to explore what is on the shelves and walls.

Over 3,000 Items in a Private Collection

The most notable feature of the space is found all around the tables.

The family collection now includes over 3,000 historical items, with approximately 600 of them displayed in Mvsevm. The collection is strongly focused on the maritime and military history of the Adriatic, which is particularly interesting in Vis – an island that has been an important maritime and military point due to its strategic location for centuries.

Among the items are maritime equipment, parts of uniforms, weapons, insignia, documents, and many other objects related to various navies and periods.

Some items originate from Vis and old island houses, while a large part of the collection has been gathered over the years through travels and collectors.

Torpedo and Rare Maritime Artifacts

Items related to the development of naval warfare attract special attention.

The collection includes a historical torpedo associated with the Rijeka tradition of torpedo production, which was transported over a long journey to end up in Vis.

Such items set Mvsevm apart from spaces that merely use old objects as decoration. Behind much of the collection lies a concrete history that the owners know well and are happy to explain to interested guests.

This is why it is worthwhile to ask questions if something catches your eye. Many items on the walls and shelves have stories that cannot be fully understood just by looking.

A Space of Just a Few Dozen Square Meters

Mvsevm is not large. The indoor space is approximately 80 square meters, making the entire collection feel very dense and almost cabinet-like.

Old cabinets, tables, porcelain, military items, and maritime artifacts are not separated into classic museum displays with lengthy explanations. Visitors sit among them, drink coffee or wine, and explore the space almost casually.

There are also a few tables outside, in a quieter part of Korzo. If one wishes to fully experience the concept of the place, it is worth stepping inside at least briefly.

Mornings and Evenings Have a Completely Different Character

Mvsevm is particularly interesting because the same space functions in two different ways throughout the day.

In the morning, the focus is on coffee. The atmosphere is quiet, and one can sit with an espresso or filter coffee while browsing the collection without the evening crowd.

In the evening, wine and small snacks take center stage. At that time, the space resembles an intimate wine bar, and the extensive wine list and historical interior provide an atmosphere that is hard to find elsewhere in Vis.

If staying in the town for a few days, Mvsevm can be visited twice to gain almost two different experiences.

Location in the Center of Vis

Mvsevm is located on Korzo, in the heart of Vis, but is not directly on the main coastal line.

It is just a short walk from the waterfront among the houses behind the coast. The ferry port is only a few minutes away on foot, so a car is not necessary if already staying in the town.

The location slightly away from the busiest part of the waterfront suits the character of the place – it is quieter, more intimate, and sufficiently hidden for Mvsevm to still feel like a place to discover.

Parking

Mvsevm does not have its own large parking area.

If arriving by car from another part of the island, it is best to use public parking in Vis and continue the last part on foot.

Since it is located in the city center, guests staying in Vis and sailors docked in the harbor do not need a car.
