Maslinica on Šolta – Beaches, Attractions and Visitor Guide

Maslinica is located on the far western side of the island of Šolta and is the only settlement with a port on that side of the island. The place is not large, but it connects an old stone core, the Martinis Marchi Castle, a modern marina, several beaches, and a view of a group of seven islets within a small area. This relationship between the settlement, the sea, and the islets gives Maslinica a distinctive appearance compared to other places on Šolta.

The majority of Maslinica can be explored on foot. It takes just a few minutes to reach the castle, marina, dining establishments, and the main beach from the waterfront, while a short uphill walk through the southern part of the settlement leads to the Church of St. Nicholas and a viewpoint. For more distant coves, cycling paths, and island tours, more time is needed, or one may use a bicycle, car, kayak, or boat.

The Old Port and the Settlement Developed Around the Castle

Maslinica began to develop in the early 18th century around the fortified castle of the Marchi family. The castle was built in 1708 to defend the settlement from sea attacks, and the Marchi family settled agricultural, fishing, and maritime workers on their estates. A church dedicated to St. Nicholas was also built for the new settlement on a hill south of the cove.

The Martinis Marchi Castle remains the most recognizable building in Maslinica today. Its stone facades and tall tower are best seen from the waterfront and from the opposite side of the port. The renovated castle now operates as a heritage hotel, so the interior is not open for free visits like a museum. However, the exterior remains an important part of the walk through the settlement and the best starting point for learning about the history of Maslinica.

Next to the castle, the modern marina Martinis Marchi has developed, making Maslinica one of the more important nautical destinations on Šolta. The marina and hotel give the southern part of the port a more organized and elegant appearance, while the opposite side retains stone houses, smaller boats, local moorings, and narrow streets of the old core.

The Church of St. Nicholas and the View of the Seven Islets

The Church of St. Nicholas is located on a hill above the southern side of the settlement. From the center of Maslinica, it can be reached on foot via local streets that lead uphill, and the ascent takes approximately ten minutes, depending on the starting point and pace.

From the area around the church, one of the widest views of Maslinica, the surrounding coves, and the archipelago in front of the settlement opens up. On clear days, the view extends towards Drvenik and the Trogir area. Due to Maslinica's western position, it is particularly beautiful to visit in the late afternoon before sunset.

The church does not have fixed tourist opening hours, so one should not expect the interior to always be open. The outdoor area and viewpoint are accessible year-round. The ascent is not long but may be strenuous for older individuals and those with reduced mobility, especially during the summer heat.

The Seven Islets in Front of Maslinica

In front of the Maslinica cove lies a group of seven islets: Polebrnjak, Saskinja, Stipanska, Kamik, Balkun, Rudula, and Grmej. The islets partially shield the port from the open sea and form the most recognizable part of the Maslinica landscape.

They are best viewed from the Punta beach area, the western part of the coast, and the viewpoint near the Church of St. Nicholas. The islets are not a developed excursion site connected by a regular boat line. They can be visited by one's own or rented vessel, organized boat, or kayak, but only when sea and weather conditions are favorable.

There are no tourist facilities, water supply, or arranged beaches on the islets. The coastline is mostly rocky, and disembarking is not easy everywhere. Swimming from Maslinica to the islets is not advisable as it passes through an area frequented by boats and yachts entering the port.

The Islet of Stipanska and the Remains of the Old Basilica

The largest and historically most interesting islet of the Maslinica archipelago is Stipanska. It features the remains of an early Christian church associated with the veneration of St. Stephen and traces of a former Benedictine monastery. The entire area has cultural-historical landscape value and is subject to protection and restoration.

Stipanska can only be reached by sea. There is no regular line, organized tourist dock, or fixed working hours. The safest way to arrive is by a small boat with someone familiar with the area who can assess where to dock that day.

The site is not arranged as an open-air museum. Movement is over natural and uneven terrain, making the visit impractical for small children, individuals with mobility difficulties, or visitors in wheelchairs. It is necessary to bring water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear, and to take special care not to damage the walls and other archaeological remains.

Beaches in Maslinica

The most practical beach for swimming without leaving the settlement is Punta Beach, also known as Maslinica Beach. It is located on the western edge of the settlement and offers a view of the islets. The beach can be reached on foot from the center along the coast, without a demanding ascent. It is the main and more organized beach in Maslinica, where a beach bar operates during the season and additional facilities may be available.

Punta is a good choice for families with children and visitors who want to stay close to accommodations, restaurants, and the center of the settlement. During the busiest part of the summer, the beach and nearby coast can be lively, so for a quieter swim, it is best to visit in the morning.

On the southern side of the Maslinica cove, a pine forest and smaller rocky parts of the coast stretch out. Here, quieter swimming spots can be found, but the entry into the sea is not arranged everywhere, and the bottom may be uneven and slippery. Such areas are more suitable for confident swimmers than for families with small children.

For those seeking a more secluded natural beach, the Šipova cove, or Šipkova, with a small sandy beach, is interesting. The approach is more demanding than to the beaches in the settlement itself, so it is advisable to check the condition of the path before setting out and to account for the last part that must be traversed on foot. There are no tourist facilities at the location.

The Šešula Cove

South of Maslinica lies the deeply recessed Šešula cove, known as a sheltered spot for boats and one of the most visited anchorages on the western side of Šolta. It can be reached from Maslinica on foot, by bicycle, or by car, with access via a local road and partly through a more natural landscape.

Šešula is not a classic urban beach. The cove is primarily visited for its natural position, swimming from the rocky shore, boat excursions, and restaurants that operate during the tourist season. It is most pleasant for pedestrians to set out in the morning or later in the afternoon, as much of the path is exposed to the sun in summer.

Kayaking, Boating, and Active Recreation

Maslinica is particularly suitable for exploring the sea by kayak. The most common route is from the Punta beach area towards the nearby islets, with views of the castle, port, and the western coast of Šolta. The excursion should be planned early in the morning or in the evening when there is no strong wind and boat traffic is lighter. A life jacket, sun protection, and checking the weather forecast are more important than the distance itself.

For longer coastal exploration, a small motorboat or organized excursion is a better choice. By boat, one can visit the seven islets, approach Stipanska, and visit coves that are difficult to access from land.

Maslinica is also connected to walking and cycling paths leading to Donje Selo, Srednje Selo, and the interior of the island. The official mountain biking route, the Twilight Trail over the 7 islets, leads from Rogač through Grohoto and Maslinica to Donje Selo and then back to Rogač. The route includes asphalt, gravel, and technically demanding descents, so a mountain or electric mountain bike is needed for the entire loop.

Restaurants, Taverns, and Evening Walks

The majority of dining establishments in Maslinica are located along the waterfront, marina, and in close proximity to the center. The offerings are diverse: from fish, shellfish, and grilled dishes to pizzas, simpler meals, desserts, coffee, and drinks by the sea.

During July and August, it is advisable to reserve a table in advance at the more popular restaurants, especially if one wishes to sit right by the shore. Some establishments operate only seasonally, so it is best to check current opening hours before visiting outside of summer.

Evening walks usually lead from the waterfront and old core towards the castle and marina, and then along the western coast towards Punta beach. Maslinica does not have a large promenade or vibrant nightlife, but it is pleasant for a quiet dinner, drink, and a short walk along the boats.

How to Get to Maslinica

From Split, the ferry goes to Rogač, the main ferry port on Šolta. The ferry ride on the Split – Rogač line takes approximately 60 minutes. A purchased ticket for a specific departure also secures a place on the ferry, but the schedule and availability should be checked before traveling.

From Rogač to Maslinica, an island bus operates via Grohoto, Srednje Selo, and Donje Selo. Departures are coordinated with some ferry connections, but the schedule changes throughout the year, so one should not rely on old timetables.

By car, one can reach Maslinica from Rogač via a road through Grohoto and Donje Selo. The road is paved and runs through the central part of the island. In the summer months, one should not expect to find free parking along the waterfront, so it is more practical to leave the car in a permitted area before the narrower coastal part and continue on foot. Hotel and marina parking are not public parking for all visitors.

Maslinica can also be reached by one's own boat. It is necessary to check availability and conditions for mooring in the marina in advance, especially during the main nautical season.

Who is Maslinica Most Suitable For

Maslinica is a good choice for couples, families seeking a quieter seaside location, sailors, and visitors interested in kayaking, cycling, and boat excursions. The center is compact, and most essential facilities are within a pleasant walking distance.

For families with small children, accommodations and swimming near Punta beach are the most practical. Distant coves, rocky parts of the coast, and the islet of Stipanska are not equally easy for children, older adults, and those with reduced mobility.

The waterfront and main coastal area are generally easily accessible, but the old streets may have uneven stone surfaces, and the path to the Church of St. Nicholas leads uphill. Maslinica is not the best choice for visitors seeking large shops, intense nightlife, or a wide range of off-season activities.

The Best Time to Visit Maslinica

July and August bring the most open restaurants, excursions, and activities, but also the highest number of boats, vehicles, and visitors. For more pleasant swimming, walks, and island exploration, June and September are very good, as the days are still long enough, and the place is quieter.

Spring and autumn are suitable for cyclists and walkers as there are no extreme heat conditions. Maslinica can be visited year-round, but outside the main season, some dining and tourist establishments do not operate daily.

For a day trip, it is sufficient to visit the waterfront, castle, Church of St. Nicholas, viewpoint, and Punta beach. For swimming, visiting Šešula, an excursion to the islets, and exploring the western part of Šolta, it is better to stay at least two or three nights.
