Experience the Selca Fair – A Day of Celebration for Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Every year on the 16th of July, Selca transforms into a lively hub of celebration for the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the patron saint of the village. This date is not just a religious observance; it also marks the Day of the Municipality of Selca, making the fair a significant event for both locals and visitors alike.

For those visiting, this day stands out as one of the most captivating experiences of summer on the eastern side of Brač. The usually tranquil stone village bursts into life, filled with laughter, music, and festivities that last from dawn until the stars twinkle above.

The celebrations kick off with a religious procession, where the statue of Our Lady is carried through the streets, culminating in an evening mass that weaves through the charming cobbled lanes. This procession is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the fair, showcasing the deep-rooted traditions of the community.

Visitors during the fair will find Selca transformed in delightful ways:

  • The squares and streets are bustling with people and open-air terraces,
  • The entire village becomes a pedestrian haven,
  • Taverns and cafés remain open late into the night,
  • Live concerts and performances light up the main square,
  • The air is filled with a blend of local festivity and religious reverence.

Unlike the larger commercial festivals along the coast, the Selca Fair retains a distinctly local flavour. Here, you’ll find a mix of residents, families returning to their roots for the celebration, and tourists eager to immerse themselves in an authentic Dalmatian experience. Many visitors remark that the fair feels more like a genuine island tradition than a typical tourist event.

The unique architecture of Selca adds to the enchanting atmosphere. Renowned for its stone-carving heritage and the iconic white Brač stone, the village’s squares, steps, and façades serve as a stunning backdrop for evening concerts and gatherings. Often referred to as the "cultural heart of Brač", Selca boasts a wealth of monuments, ancient stone houses, and a rich history waiting to be explored.

As night falls, the sounds of the fair fill the air with delightful melodies:

  • Dalmatian and pop music,
  • Traditional klapa singing,
  • Performances by local artists,
  • Concerts in the main square.

Alongside the music, the fair is also a time when local dishes and Brač specialities are in high demand, making the taverns and restaurants in Selca some of the busiest spots throughout the summer.
