Fjera in Selca – A Celebration of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Every year on July 16, Selca transforms into a vibrant hub of activity as it celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the patron saint of the town and parish. This date also marks the Municipality of Selca's Day, giving the Fjera both religious and communal significance.

For visitors, this event represents one of the most captivating days of summer in the eastern part of Brač. The typically tranquil stone village bursts with life, music, and festivities that extend from dawn until late at night.

The celebration begins with religious ceremonies at the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the impressive Church of Christ the King, often referred to as the "Brač Cathedral." Following a long-standing local tradition, a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is paraded through the streets in a procession, with the evening mass and the procession through the cobblestone lanes being particularly memorable highlights of the Fjera.

Tourists attending the Fjera experience Selca in a unique way, distinct from an ordinary summer day:

  • Streets and squares are bustling with people and open terraces,
  • the entire village becomes a large pedestrian zone,
  • taverns and cafes remain open late into the night,
  • live concerts and performances take place in the main square,
  • the air is filled with a blend of local festivity and religious tradition.

Unlike large commercial festivals along the coast, the Fjera in Selca maintains a distinctly local character. The streets are alive with a mix of residents, families returning to their hometown for the holiday, and tourists eager to experience an authentic Dalmatian celebration. Many visitors note that the Fjera feels more like a genuine island tradition than a tourist event.

The unique atmosphere is further enhanced by the architecture of Selca. Renowned for its stone masonry tradition and white Brač stone, the town's stone squares, steps, and facades serve as a backdrop for evening concerts and gatherings. Selca is often referred to as the "cultural heart of Brač," celebrated for its numerous monuments, ancient stone houses, and rich history.

During the evening, one can typically hear:

  • Dalmatian and popular music,
  • klapa singing,
  • performances by local artists,
  • concerts in the main square.

In addition to the music, the Fjera is a time when local dishes and Brač specialties are in high demand, making the taverns and restaurants in Selca among the busiest throughout the summer.
