Kupina Beach – A Small Pebble Cove for a Peaceful Retreat near Gdinj
Kupina Beach is located in Kupina Cove on the northern coast of eastern Hvar, within the Gdinj area. It is a small and tranquil cove with only a few houses by the sea, a pebble beach, and very limited amenities, sufficiently distanced from the main island road to maintain a genuine sense of seclusion.
Kupina is not a completely wild beach as there are several holiday homes right by the sea, but there is no tourist resort, hotel, pier, or extensive hospitality offerings. This makes it particularly suitable for visitors seeking peace, a natural beach, and a simple day by the sea.
The cove can be accessed by car from the Gdinj area. The final approach is via an unpaved road, but personal vehicles can reach it. Alternatively, one can arrive by boat, and some houses have their own small moorings along the coast.
A Small Pebble Beach
The main beach at Kupina is pebbly, featuring smaller stones and pebbles.
It is not a large beach, but rather a typical small Hvar beach at the bottom of the cove. Alongside the main beach, there are also concrete or stone sections near the houses that are used for sunbathing and accessing the sea.
As one moves towards the edges of the cove, the coastline becomes rockier and more natural.
Due to the limited number of houses and the absence of a large public car park, Kupina generally does not have the overcrowded beach feel that can be encountered in more popular Hvar locations during August.
Gentle Entry into the Sea
One of the greatest advantages of Kupina is its gradual entry into the sea.
From the pebble beach, one can enter without encountering large rocks, and the depth increases gradually at first. This makes the beach suitable for younger children.
This sets Kupina apart from many small Hvar coves where entry into the sea is over rocks or where the depth increases rapidly.
Of course, it is a natural beach without a lifeguard service or organised children's facilities, so usual supervision is required for small children.
Clear Water and a Calm Atmosphere
Kupina is a small cove with little boat traffic and no larger settlements nearby.
The water is very clear in stable weather, and due to the light pebbles along the shore, it takes on more pronounced blue hues in certain areas.
The edges of the cove are interesting for snorkelling as the pebbly bottom gradually transitions to rocks, cliffs, and natural seabed.
The most pleasant aspect is precisely what is absent in Kupina – music from beach bars, heavy traffic, and the constant influx of large numbers of day visitors.
Just a Few Houses by the Sea
In Kupina Cove, there are only a few holiday homes.
Some are just a few metres from the beach, allowing guests staying here to practically step out of their house directly onto the shore.
Among the more well-known properties is the Robinson-style house Adriatic Queen, situated just above the pebble beach, with a private dock and mooring for its guests.
It is important to distinguish between the private amenities of the houses and the public infrastructure of the beach. Docks, parking spaces, and terraces associated with certain properties belong to their guests and are not automatically available to day visitors.
The Robinson Crusoe Character of the Cove
Kupina is a good example of a holiday often described as Robinson Crusoe-style on eastern Hvar.
There is not a wide selection of shops and restaurants in the cove, so the stay is based on the sea, one's own accommodation, and good preparation before descending from the main road.
For a few days of relaxation, this can be exactly what is sought – morning swims without driving, peace during the day, and evenings free from city noise.
For guests who desire several restaurants, shops, and an evening promenade within a few minutes' walk, there are more practical locations on the island.
How to Reach Kupina Beach?
Kupina can be reached from the Gdinj area, via the main island road D116 towards the northern coast.
The final approach is via a gravel road.
Accommodation facilities in the cove state that access by regular cars is good, but it is a local unpaved road, so one should drive slowly and cautiously.
The condition of the gravel can change throughout the year, especially after winter and heavy rains.
The cove is approximately 5 kilometres from the centre of Gdinj, but travel time should not be estimated solely by distance as the final part is traversed more slowly.
Parking
There are private parking spaces for guests near the houses.
This does not mean that Kupina has a large organised public car park for all bathers.
If visiting just for the beach, vehicles should be left in suitable available spaces along the access road, ensuring that private entrances, parking spaces, or passage for other cars are not blocked.
During the peak season, it is advisable to arrive early as there is simply not much space for vehicles in the small cove.
Limited Natural Shade
Surrounding the cove is Mediterranean vegetation, but the main pebble beach does not have a large continuous strip of pine trees that would provide deep shade throughout the day.
Some sheltered areas may have shade depending on the time of day, but for a full day’s stay, it is wise to bring a sun umbrella or other sun protection.
Private covered terraces by the houses should not be considered public shade for bathers.
No Beach Bar or Restaurants on the Beach
Kupina is not a beach one visits for hospitality services.
There is no classic beach bar or restaurant on the main beach.
For a day visit, it is best to bring water, food, and everything needed for a few hours of swimming.
For a restaurant and more amenities, one can head towards the nearby Pokrivenik, where Restaurant Preza and a more developed tourist offering by the sea can be found.
This makes Kupina a good alternative to Pokrivenik – close enough for combination during a holiday, but much simpler and quieter.
Arrival by Boat
Kupina is also suitable for arrival by a smaller boat.
Some houses have their own docks and mooring options for their guests, indicating that the cove is regularly accessed from the sea.
However, these are not public commercial moorings.
If arriving by one's own boat without a pre-arranged mooring, care should be taken regarding space for bathers, private docks, and local conditions.
For a small boat, arriving from the sea can be particularly practical as it completely avoids driving on the gravel road.
The Northern Side of Hvar
Unlike most of the Gdinj coves we have covered on the southern shore, Kupina is located on the northern side of the island.
This is beneficial during a holiday as the two sides of Hvar often do not have the same sea conditions.
In southern winds, the northern coast can be calmer, while stronger northern winds and the bora can make Kupina considerably less pleasant.
If staying in Gdinj for several days, the ability to choose between northern and southern coves is one of the greatest advantages of this part of the island.
Kupina or Pokrivenik?
These two coves are located close to each other but have completely different characters.
Pokrivenik is larger, more well-known, and has a hotel, restaurant, and more tourist amenities.
Kupina is small, quiet, and has only a few houses by the sea.
For lunch, a greater selection of amenities, and an easier tourist day, Pokrivenik is more practical.
For swimming without many people and the feeling of a secluded small cove, Kupina is the better choice.
Due to their proximity, there is no reason to choose only one during a longer stay.
Who Will Enjoy Kupina Beach the Most?
Kupina Beach is particularly suitable for couples, families with children, guests of Robinson-style accommodation, and anyone who does not mind a few kilometres of local and gravel road in exchange for a quiet beach.
The gentle entry into the sea is an important advantage for children, while the small number of houses preserves the quiet character of the cove.
It may be less suitable for guests who require beach bars, sun loungers, public showers, large organised parking, and a wide selection of food right by the beach.
Kupina is much simpler: a small pebble beach, a few houses along the coast, clear water, and tranquillity on the northern side of eastern Hvar.
