Pobij Beach – A Pebble Cove and Robinson Crusoe Tranquillity on the Northern Coast of Hvar
Pobij Beach is located in the cove of the same name on the northern coast of eastern Hvar, approximately eight kilometres by road from the village of Gdinj. At the bottom of the cove lies a beautiful pebble shore, surrounded by several houses and apartments almost right by the sea.
While Pobij is not entirely wild, it is sufficiently distanced from the main island road to maintain a true Robinson Crusoe character. There are no hotels, large piers, or typical tourist zones. Instead, small holiday homes, private jetties, pine trees, and Mediterranean greenery line the coast.
This beach is particularly appealing to families due to its finer pebbles and gradual entry into the water. However, the last approximately three kilometres of access are via a gravel road, making it more worthwhile to visit for several hours or a whole day rather than just for a quick swim.
Fine Pebbles and a Beautiful Natural Shore
The main beach is situated at the end of Pobij Cove.
It is covered with finer pebbles and smooth stones, which are more pleasant to sit on than the coarser rocks found in many smaller coves on Hvar.
The shore is not vast, but it is wide enough for a comfortable stay for families and bathers from the nearby houses. Towards the sides of the cove, the pebbles transition into rocky shores, private jetties, and natural cliffs.
As a result, Pobij offers more genuine swimming spots, although the central pebble beach is the most practical for a day’s stay.
Gentle Entry into the Sea
One of the greatest advantages of Pobij Beach is its gentle entry into the sea.
There is a short shallow area along the coast, after which the depth gradually increases. There is no need to enter over large rocks or slippery stone slabs.
This makes Pobij a very good natural beach for children, including younger swimmers who are just becoming more confident in the water.
Of course, there is no lifeguard service or designated children's swimming area, so usual supervision is necessary, but the configuration of the shore and sea is much more pleasant than on the steeper rocky parts of the coast.
Clear Water and Views Towards the Mainland
Pobij faces the Hvar Channel and the mainland.
In calm weather, the water is very clear, and the bright pebbles along the shore further enhance the blue and turquoise tones of the sea.
The central part of the cove is the most pleasant for regular swimming, while the rocky edges offer more interesting underwater scenery for snorkelling.
There are also smaller private jetties near the houses from which one can access deeper waters, but day visitors should respect the fact that some of these areas belong to private properties.
Pobij is Particularly Good for Children
Among the smaller coves below Gdinj, Pobij stands out as a very practical choice for families seeking peace without wanting a completely inaccessible rocky beach.
The finer pebbles make it easier to stay on the shore, and the short shallow area allows children to acclimatise to the sea more easily.
There is little road traffic in the cove itself, so after parking, most movement occurs on foot between the houses and the beach.
On the other hand, it is advisable to come prepared as Pobij lacks the infrastructure of a large family beach. Water, food, hats, sun protection, and everything needed for children should ideally be brought before descending into the cove.
Natural Shade in Parts of the Beach
The cove is surrounded by greenery, and in certain areas along the beach and houses, there is natural shade.
This largely depends on the exact location and time of day. One should not expect the entire pebble shore to be in deep shade from morning until evening.
For a full day’s stay during July and August, it is advisable to have your own sunshade, especially if visiting with children.
The advantage of Pobij is that the surrounding greenery gives the cove a softer and more pleasant appearance than completely barren rocky bays.
Several Houses Almost Right by the Sea
Pobij has more accommodation options than the neighbouring Veli Kučac, but it is still a small summer settlement.
Some houses are located just 10 to 20 metres from the sea, and some have their own jetties and moorings for smaller boats.
This type of accommodation is particularly suitable for guests who do not wish to drive to the beach every day after arrival.
Morning swims, returning to the apartment for lunch, and evening dips in the sea are possible without a car and practically without leaving the cove.
True Robinson-style Accommodation
Some accommodation in Pobij truly operates in a Robinson-style mode.
They use solar panels, water tanks, gas stoves, and other systems adapted for houses located far from full municipal infrastructure.
In some properties, electricity is sufficient for lighting, charging mobile phones, and basic appliances, but one should not expect the same conditions as in a large apartment complex.
For a guest who consciously chooses such a holiday, this is part of the appeal of Pobij, rather than a drawback.
No Traditional Restaurant or Beach Bar on the Beach
At Pobij Beach, one should not expect a traditional restaurant, beach bar, or shop.
The houses and apartments have their own facilities, but these are not public infrastructure available to all day visitors.
For a more substantial lunch or dinner, there are restaurants in other coves along the northern coast, while for shopping, one must head towards Gdinj.
Therefore, it is advisable to bring enough water, food, and everything needed for the day before descending into Pobij.
This is particularly important as the drive back along three kilometres of gravel just for a forgotten bottle of water can quickly spoil the sense of a peaceful day by the sea.
How to Get to Pobij Beach?
Pobij is approximately 8 kilometres by road from the village of Gdinj.
From the main island road D116, turn towards the northern coast and continue along the local road to the cove.
The last approximately three kilometres are on a gravel road.
You can drive very close to the sea, and a regular car is usually sufficient, but one should drive slowly on the final stretch.
Some accommodation providers specifically warn that the gravel is not ideal for cars with very low ground clearance, so caution is advised with such vehicles.
The condition of the road may change after winter, rain, and local roadworks.
Parking
Houses and apartments in Pobij generally have private parking spaces, often just above the properties.
This does not mean there is a large public parking area for day visitors.
If coming just for the beach, the car should be left in an available spot at the end of the access road, ensuring that private spaces are not used and that access for other vehicles is not blocked.
Space is limited, so during July and August, arriving early is advantageous.
Leave the Car and Stay All Day
Pobij is not a beach worth visiting just for a quick swim.
The eight kilometres from Gdinj and the last three kilometres of gravel make much more sense if a significant part of the day is spent in the cove.
The most practical approach is to arrive in the morning, find a spot on the pebble beach, bring lunch or snacks, and stay until late afternoon.
At that point, the somewhat demanding journey becomes part of the overall experience – after parking, there is no more traffic, obligations, or reasons to return to the main road.
Arriving by Boat
Pobij is also accessible by sea.
Some accommodation providers have private moorings for smaller boats, which is particularly convenient for guests staying in the cove.
These are not public commercial moorings or a designated marina.
For a day visit by your own boat, care should be taken regarding private jetties, bathers, and other vessels in the relatively small space of the cove.
Sailing is also an excellent way to connect Pobij with neighbouring coves along the northern coast.
Veli Kučac is Immediately to the West
Just west of Pobij lies Veli Kučac Cove, which Google Maps marks as Kučac beach.
Veli Kučac is smaller, more natural, and has even fewer houses, while Pobij has a more pronounced pebble beach and slightly more Robinson-style accommodation.
On the map, they are very close, but driving between the small coves is not always as straightforward as it appears on a map.
If exploring this part of the coast by boat, several neighbouring coves can be easily connected in the same day.
The Northern Side of Hvar and the Bura Wind
Pobij is located on the northern coast, so when planning a swim, it is useful to check the wind conditions.
During southerly winds, this side of the island can often offer much calmer seas than the southern Gdinj waves.
In the case of bura or stronger northern winds, the situation changes, and the sea at Pobij can become choppy.
This is one of the significant advantages of holidaying in the Gdinj area – in a relatively short time, one can choose between the northern and southern coasts depending on where the swimming conditions are better that day.
Pobij or Pokrivenik?
For guests exploring the northern coast, it is worth comparing Pobij with the more well-known Pokrivenik.
Pokrivenik has a hotel, Restaurant Preza, more facilities, and a simpler tourist character.
Pobij is quieter, smaller, and much more focused on a Robinson-style holiday.
If the priority is a restaurant by the sea and more infrastructure, Pokrivenik is more practical.
If the goal is a small pebble beach, a few houses, and a day almost free of crowds, Pobij is a better fit.
Who Will Enjoy Pobij Beach the Most?
Pobij Beach is particularly suitable for families with children, couples, guests seeking Robinson-style accommodation, and anyone who enjoys small natural coves.
The fine pebbles and gradual entry into the sea make it more pleasant than many rocky bathing spots, while the few houses along the coast provide enough life to prevent the cove from feeling completely deserted.
On the other hand, it is not suitable for guests who value beach bars, sun loungers, large parking areas, public showers, and an asphalt road to the beach.
Pobij is interesting precisely because of the combination of beautiful pebble shores, very clean waters, Robinson-style houses along the coast, and a sufficiently remote location that the northern part of eastern Hvar still feels peaceful and unobtrusive.
