Balun Beach, Vrboska – a large naturist rocky beach with flat stone slabs and views of Zečevo

Balun Beach is located on the Glavica peninsula, east of Vrboska, and is one of the most striking natural naturist locations in this part of Hvar Island. Unlike typical pebble coves, Balun consists of large, almost flat stone slabs that gently slope towards the sea, making the entire coastline open, spacious, and very suitable for sunbathing.

Known as a naturist beach, Balun attracts visitors seeking tranquility, ample space, clear waters, and a natural setting devoid of conventional tourist infrastructure. From the open rocks, there are lovely views towards the islet of Zečevo and the Hvar Channel.

What is the coastline like?

The most distinctive feature of Balun is its large flat stone slabs, which in some places resemble natural terraces.

This means that visitors do not lie on pebbles or sand but directly on smooth rocks. The surfaces are wide enough to comfortably accommodate a towel, and the slope towards the sea is generally gentle.

The coastline feels much more open and spacious compared to smaller coves like Maslinica or the Pakleni Islands.

Entry into the sea and seabed

Access to the sea is direct over the rocks and stone slabs.

In some areas, the transition is gentle and straightforward, while in others, the terrain is somewhat uneven. The seabed is predominantly rocky and stony, lacking the sandy shallows found at some other beaches around Vrboska.

The water deepens relatively quickly in certain parts, making Balun more suitable for confident swimmers rather than small children.

Water shoes are advisable due to the rocks, stones, and potential sea urchins.

Naturist character

Balun is recognised as a naturist beach.

Naturism here is not just an occasional occurrence but part of a long-standing tradition in this area of the Glavica peninsula. The spacious rocks, distance from main bathing areas, and natural environment have made Balun popular among naturists.

While some bathers may wear swimsuits, it is important to note that naturism is the norm, and Balun is primarily known as a naturist location.

Views of the islet of Zečevo

From Balun, there are very pleasant views towards the islet of Zečevo.

This is one reason why this beach feels different from more enclosed coves. You are presented with open waters, Zečevo, and the northern coast of Hvar, giving the entire location a sense of greater space and complete distance from settlements.

It is particularly beautiful in calm weather when the sea is flat and very clear.

Snorkelling

The rocky coastline and stony seabed make Balun a good spot for snorkelling.

Underwater, there are flat rocks, rocky crevices, and deeper areas, making the underwater scenery more interesting than on a monotonous sandy bottom.

The water is very clear, especially when there is no strong wind.

Shade

There is limited natural shade on the stone slabs themselves.

A pine forest is located behind the beach, so some shade can be found further from the sea, but if you wish to stay directly on the rocks by the water, be prepared for plenty of sun.

For a full day’s stay, it is advisable to bring your own sun protection and sufficient water.

How to reach Balun

Balun is situated further east of Soline, on the outer part of the Glavica peninsula.

It is not accessible directly by car. The most practical approach is to leave your vehicle in the Soline area or elsewhere on the peninsula where parking is permitted, and then continue on foot along the coastal and forest path.

The final part of the access leads through natural terrain and is not suitable for prams or individuals with reduced mobility.

Balun can also be visited by boat, but there is no officially designated anchorage.

Parking

There is no designated parking directly at Balun Beach.

The most practical option is to use parking in the Soline area and then walk towards the eastern part of Glavica.

Do not expect parking immediately by the rocks or a conventional car approach to the beach.

Are there facilities?

Balun does not have a beach bar, restaurant, toilets, showers, or organised rental of sun loungers and umbrellas.

This is a completely natural naturist beach, so everything needed for your stay should be brought with you.

The nearest more substantial facilities are located in Soline and Vrboska.

Who is Balun best suited for?

Balun is an excellent choice for naturists and visitors seeking ample space, a rocky coastline, and very clean waters without crowds and infrastructure.

It is less suitable for small children, non-swimmers, and those who prefer pebbles, shallow waters, or easy car access.

If you enjoy sunbathing on flat stone slabs, open views towards Zečevo, and a natural naturist atmosphere, Balun is one of the most distinctive beaches around Vrboska.
