Zečevo Island and Beaches near Vrboska – A Naturist Isle with Pine Forests and Turquoise Waters

Zečevo is a small uninhabited island located northeast of Vrboska, approximately one kilometre away in a straight line. There are no roads, bridges, or pedestrian access to the island; it can only be reached by sea, either by private boat or water taxi from Vrboska and Jelsa.

The island has been known for decades as a naturist destination, but it is not exclusively FKK (Freikörperkultur, or nudist). On the shore, naturists mingle with bathers in swimwear, families, couples, and sailors. The main attractions of Zečevo are its dense pine forests, exceptionally clear waters, natural rocks, and several small swimming spots along the coast.

This is not an island with a single large central beach. Instead, Zečevo comprises a series of natural rocky and stony bathing areas, with a more developed zone around Lantina Beach Bar.

What is the coastline like on Zečevo?

The majority of Zečevo's coastline consists of natural rocks, flat stone slabs, and rocky transitions to the sea.

In some areas, there are small sections with finer pebbles, but Zečevo is not a typical pebble island. The rocks and natural stone slabs serve as the primary surface for sunbathing.

In the more developed area near Lantina Beach Bar, there are prepared surfaces for lounging, sunbeds, and cabanas, making this part more practical for a full day’s stay.

What is the seabed like?

The seabed around Zečevo is mainly a combination of rocks, stones, and smaller sandy or lighter sections.

In the bays, entry is easier, while in the more open areas, one enters the water directly from the rocks.

The water is exceptionally clear and quickly transitions from turquoise to deep blue, especially along the edges of the island where the depth increases.

Due to the rocks and sea urchins, water shoes are highly advisable.

Snorkelling and Underwater Exploration

Zečevo is an excellent location for snorkelling and exploring the underwater world.

The rocky edges, stone crevices, fish, and transitions between lighter and darker seabeds create a much more interesting underwater landscape than a monotonous sandy beach.

The water is particularly clear on calm days, allowing for a clear view of the seabed even from the surface.

Pine Forest and Natural Shade

Almost the entire island is covered with pine trees and Mediterranean vegetation.

The pine forest reaches almost to the sea in several places, making Zečevo one of the more pleasant spots for a full day’s stay during the hottest part of summer.

On the open stone slabs, there is no shade, but moving a few metres away from the sea will often lead to shaded areas beneath the pines.

The more developed area around the beach bar also features shaded zones and cabanas.

The FKK Tradition of Zečevo

Zečevo has a long naturist tradition and has been noted for decades as one of the more well-known FKK spots in this part of Hvar.

This is not a closed naturist camp, nor is there an entrance or controlled zone. Naturism is simply traditionally accepted in various parts of the island.

Today, both naturists and guests in swimwear enjoy Zečevo, so it is not necessary to be a nudist to visit.

However, if you are particularly uncomfortable with a naturist environment, it is good to know that you may encounter it here, especially in the more remote rocky areas of the coast.

Lantina Beach – The More Developed Area of Zečevo

In one of the most beautiful bays lies the Lantina Beach Bar & Restaurant, which has become the main gathering place on Zečevo in recent years.

Along the shore, there are organised cabanas, sunbeds, and seating areas in the shade of the pines, with food and drink available.

The confirmed menu includes fresh fish such as sea bass, shellfish, prawns, and salads, along with wine and other beverages.

This part of Zečevo has a more pronounced beach club character, with music and a well-organised space, making it a different experience compared to the more remote natural FKK rocks.

Those seeking complete silence and seclusion will fare better if they continue further along the island’s coast.

How to Get to Zečevo?

Zečevo cannot be reached by car or on foot.

The simplest way is to take a water taxi from Vrboska or Jelsa. The journey takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the departure point and vessel.

During the summer season, there are regular and arranged taxi transfers, but schedules and prices are not fixed, so they should be checked on the day of arrival.

If you have your own boat, inflatable, or rented vessel, reaching Zečevo is also quite straightforward.

Arriving by Private Boat

Zečevo is very popular among sailors.

Smaller vessels often anchor in the more sheltered bays on the southern and western sides of the island. The water is deep enough for access, but care should be taken regarding swimmers and the seabed configuration.

The most well-known bay near Lantina is well protected from most winds, but it is not entirely safe during strong southerly winds.

In stronger southerly winds, it is better to choose a more sheltered bay or postpone your arrival.

Is There Parking?

There are no cars on Zečevo, so there is no parking.

If you are arriving by water taxi from Vrboska or Jelsa, you should leave your car in a public parking area at the departure point.

Private marina, hotel, or apartment parking should not be used as public parking unless explicitly permitted.

Are There Toilets and Showers?

There is no public beach infrastructure in the natural parts of Zečevo.

In the area around Lantina Beach Bar, there are facilities for guests of the establishment, but the entire island should not be viewed as an organised beach with public toilets, showers, and changing rooms.

If you plan to stay further from the beach bar, it is advisable to bring enough water and everything needed for a day at sea.

Is Zečevo Suitable for Children?

The more developed area near Lantina can be pleasant for families, especially due to the calmer bay and easier access to the water.

The rest of the island is mostly rocky and less practical for small children.

One should also consider the presence of sea urchins, uneven rocks, and the fact that you are on an island, meaning return trips are by boat.

For families seeking maximum convenience, beaches with showers, easy access, and car proximity, such as Soline or other organised beaches around Vrboska, may be simpler options.

How Much Time to Spend on Zečevo?

Zečevo makes the most sense as a half-day or full-day trip.

If you are coming just for swimming, a few hours will suffice. If you wish to have lunch at Lantina, explore different parts of the island, swim, and spend part of the day in the shade of the pines, it is worth staying almost the entire day.

Before departing by water taxi, it is advisable to arrange a return time in advance.

Who is Zečevo Best Suited For?

Zečevo is particularly suitable for guests looking to escape from the main island for a few hours.

The natural areas are excellent for naturists, couples, and guests seeking peace, while the area around Lantina caters to those wanting sunbeds, food, drink, and a livelier atmosphere.

The greatest advantage of Zečevo is that on such a small island, both experiences can be found – an organised beach bar and completely natural rocks among the pines.
