Vela Stiniva – an impressive cove beneath Hvar's towering cliffs
Vela Stiniva is one of the most striking coves on the northern coast of Hvar. From Zastražišće, a winding road descends towards the sea, with the final stretch revealing a narrow cove enclosed by high limestone cliffs that rise almost vertically from the water.
At the bottom of the cove, there is a pebbly beach with clear, deep blue water, a few houses along the shore, a small docking area, and a restaurant. Unlike many completely secluded coves on eastern Hvar, Vela Stiniva has enough amenities to spend an entire day here, while still retaining the feel of a small, isolated spot.
Pebbly beach amidst towering cliffs
The main feature of Vela Stiniva is not just the beach but the entire landscape surrounding it. The cove is deeply carved into the northern coast, flanked on both sides by high stone cliffs.
The central part of the shore consists of a pebbly beach. Entry into the water is mostly over smooth stones and smaller pebbles, while the seabed further out varies between pebbles, rocks, and finer material. Therefore, Vela Stiniva should not be described as a sandy beach.
The water is very clear, and due to the depth and rocky edges of the cove, it is particularly appealing for swimming and exploring the underwater life along the coast. For those with sensitive feet, water shoes may be beneficial.
Two smaller areas along the shore
Swimming is not confined to a single traditional beach area. Alongside the main pebbly section, there are smaller spots along the coast and an area by the pier, allowing visitors to spread out across various parts of the cove during the summer.
Stone slabs along the edges of the cove are also used for sunbathing, but caution is advised when entering the water over the rocks, especially when they are wet.
The high cliffs attract swimmers who jump into the sea, but this is not suitable for every spot along the shore. The depth and potential rocks beneath the surface should always be checked before jumping.
Shade is available, but not enough for everyone
Vegetation and the position between the cliffs create some natural shade, particularly along the edges of the cove and at certain times of the day. However, most of the main beach area remains exposed to the sun during the summer.
If planning to stay for several hours, it is advisable to bring your own sunshade or other sun protection. One should not expect to easily find a spot in natural shade during the peak season.
How to reach Vela Stiniva?
Vela Stiniva is located on the northern side of Hvar, approximately 2.5 km from Zastražišće, while Jelsa is about 17 km away. A local road branches off from the D116 state road at Zastražišće, leading down to the cove.
The cove can be accessed by car. The approach is tarmacked, but the road is narrow, winding, and features sharper bends on the descent, so it is advisable to drive slowly, especially when encountering vehicles coming from the opposite direction. This is not a gravel access road to the beach.
The cove is also accessible by boat, which is particularly convenient for visitors exploring the northern coast of Hvar from the sea.
Parking almost by the beach
One of the practical advantages of Vela Stiniva compared to some more remote Hvar coves is the public parking at the bottom of the cove, close to the beach. The climbing guide for Vela Stiniva explicitly mentions public parking within the cove.
However, space is limited. During the busiest summer days, it is advisable to arrive early, especially if you wish to avoid searching for a spot on the narrow local road.
Private parking spaces belonging to apartments are not part of the public parking and should not be relied upon for a day visit to the beach.
Restaurant right by the sea
Vela Stiniva is not a completely wild beach without any facilities. Along the shore is Šer Zane, a restaurant and pizzeria that has been part of the cove's tourist offerings for years.
Official local sources confirm a menu featuring fish, squid, meat dishes, and pizzas from a wood-fired oven. This is a practical difference compared to many smaller coves on eastern Hvar, where visitors must bring all food and drink with them.
There are also private accommodations in the cove, so Vela Stiniva is not just a day trip beach but a small seasonal coastal settlement during the summer.
One of the more well-known climbing areas on Hvar
The cliffs that make Vela Stiniva so photogenic are not just a backdrop for the beach. The cove is one of the more recognised areas for sport climbing on Hvar, with several sectors established on the limestone cliffs surrounding the settlement.
Climbing routes are located on various sides of the cove and offer a range from easier to very challenging routes. Access to individual sectors begins from the public parking area and local paths around the houses.
This means that the average swimmer will often encounter climbers in Vela Stiniva throughout the year, not just summer visitors.
A country house as part of the cove's history
By the sea stands a historic country house belonging to the Anđelinović family, later Duboković-Nadalini. The complex is linked to the year 1624 and represents a valuable example of rural baroque architecture in this part of Hvar.
Thus, Vela Stiniva is not just a beautiful beach surrounded by cliffs. In a very small space, traditional stone houses, historical architecture, a small harbour, a bathing area, and a modern climbing site come together.
The bora wind is significant on this side of Hvar
Vela Stiniva is open to the northern side of Hvar. When the weather is calm, the position within the deep cove provides a very pleasant atmosphere for swimming, but during stronger bora winds and other northern winds, conditions can change significantly.
Before descending from Zastražišće, it is wise to check the wind and sea conditions. This is especially important if planning to spend the entire day at the beach with small children.
Who is Vela Stiniva a good choice for?
Vela Stiniva is appealing to those who want a natural cove but do not wish to be without restaurants, parking, and other signs of civilisation for an entire day.
The beach is more practical for families than many hard-to-reach coves, as you can drive almost to the water. On the other hand, the road requires a bit more attention, and the pebbly shore and rocky seabed are not the same as a wide, well-maintained urban beach.
Ultimately, the greatest value of Vela Stiniva lies in its ambience: the high cliffs, clear water, and small settlement nestled at the end of a deep cove create a scene that is rare on Hvar.
If exploring the Zastražišće area, it is worth linking Vela Stiniva with Mala Stiniva, another exceptionally picturesque cove on this northern coast.
