The port in Baška is, however, only open to public traffic of county significance, while the nearby port of Valbiska is used for arrivals by ferry or catamaran.

CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS

According to local cave finds, Baška was inhabited as early as prehistoric times. Later remains of the population and settlements from the ancient era date back to the 2nd century BC. The settlement of Baška itself developed during the Middle Ages, when it was first mentioned as "castelum Besca". From the later Middle Ages until the 19th century, Baška was under the rule of the Frankopan family, the Venetian Republic and Austria. One of the most important monuments of Croatian culture was found in the Baška area. It is the Baška Tablet, a monument in the Glagolitic script estimated to have been created around 1100. The monument was found in the church of St. Lucy, which was built at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. The church can be visited and its interior can be viewed, and to learn about the Glagolitic tradition, it is advisable to walk the Baška Glagolitic Trail. Other religious sights in Baška are the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity, the Church of St. John the Baptist, the Chapel of St. Marko and the Church of St. Mother of God of Grička. The Baška Local History Museum is the best place to get to know Baška through interesting exhibits that testify to the long tradition of culture in its area.
